  1. Ok, but you're still not going to get anything useful for them. It's not like the Angels would get back a greater return than they gave up to get them in the first place (which wasn't much).
  2. I was a little surprised to hear he went for full slot, given some comments that McIlvaine (I think?) made about a couple of their HS draftees. Curious to see how it all plays out.
  3. That's similar to what the Angels are going through right now. They will not leave Southern California between June 26th and July 24th. The only road games during that stretch were at SD and the Dodgers.
  4. Yeah, I think that was a strategic mistake. If they would have just put him on the IL immediately, he'd be eligible to come off the IL for Saturday's game and the Angels wouldn't have played a man down for the three games prior to the break. Now, if he's still not ready and actually does need to go on the IL, they can only make it retroactive for 3 days--which means he'll miss at a minimum 6 or 7 games post-break.
  5. From a business standpoint, it doesn't really make sense for a team to both commit to some sort of higher spending floor AND give someone like Ohtani multiple opt-outs every couple years. What happens if you do that, sign Ohtani, and sign another couple guys to 5+-year deals, then Ohtani bolts after two years? You're stuck with a potentially bloated payroll, an aging Trout and Rendon, and you're missing the centerpiece of the entire financial structure of your team. I think it's highly unlikely the Angels would agree to something like this.
  6. For future planning purposes, I think you pretty much do have to work under the assumption that Walsh isn't going to be a factor and make plans for his replacement. If he gets fully healthy and recaptures what he had in 2021, then that's a great problem to have (two good bats at 1B). As much as I like him as a person (and as a personality), you can't go into 2024 (or the 2nd half of '23) counting on him to contribute.
  7. I can't imagine Arte will give a shit about what happens to Renfroe or Moore if they're several games out of the last wild card slot at the trading deadline. But as I've mentioned elsewhere, the return for Renfroe is going to be minimal. I really think a lot of folks on here need to reset their expectations if guys are moved at the deadline.
  8. Thompson had some crazy numbers this year! 53 1/3 IP, 57(!!) BB, 98(!!!) K.
  9. What value do you think Moustakas or Escobar would have on the trade market, given a) what the Angels gave up for them, and b) how lousy they've performed since being acquired?
  10. Nope, not for 50 games. Maybe 10 years ago, you'd get that type of haul, but not these days.
  11. People who believe that's the type of return they'd get if they traded Ohtani for the last ~50 games of the season aren't living in reality.
  12. Other than Machado's opt-out midway through the contract he signed with the Orioles, is there another example of such a clause in a long-term contract? Maybe there is, but I can't think of one off the top of my head. I don't really see a reason a team would want to do something like that.
  13. You're talking about Trout here? I think he's gonna be missing all the games from 7/25 to 8/9.......
  14. I'm not entirely sure they'd trade Bryce Miller for Ohtani straight up.
  15. Given that he signed, probably not. Ha. I'm just saying that it's an unusual occurrence for a guy in his situation. Maybe there's a simple answer. Hopefully, we'll learn more about him soon.
  16. You say "go to school" as if he's a HS player who'll be venturing out into the college experience for the first time. He's not. He's played 3 years of college ball at two different schools.
  17. Even if he waived his no-trade clause, I have a hard time seeing any realistic scenario in which Rendon could be traded. The Angels would probably have to agree to pay 75%+ of his remaining contract and deal a couple of top prospects to get back even a marginally useful player. Think of it this way: if Rendon was on, say, the Tigers and they made it clear he was available in a trade, is there any scenario in which you'd want the Angels to get him?
  18. Again, I think people are missing the point I'm trying to make (which probably means I was too vague to begin with). I'm not at all surprised that he signed with the Angels. I'm surprised that he wasn't drafted at all, and I'm just wondering if there's some non-obvious reason he wasn't.
  19. My point is that if he was ranked as high as the low 200s by some folks, it's odd that he wasn't drafted at all. It's not like he was a HS guy who fell due to signability concerns.
  20. Interesting. I wonder if there's more to the story here?
