Three years from now the Astros will be getting better and the Angels and Mariners will be duking it out for the AL West cellar. $100M will be committed to Weaver, Wilson, Pujols and Hamilton alone.
She and Martin both attempted to get their trials dismissed via "Stand Your Ground" motions. The motions in both trials got rejected, therefore the cases are similiar.
I personally think she should have received jail time based on thsi but the 20yr mandatory sentence was probably excessive. IMO mandatory sentencing laws are usually bad, and typically motivated to make prosecutors jobs easier (people more likely to accept plea deals instead of going to trial if there's a risk of an over the top sentence)
Florida also allows you to shield millions of dollars of assets from being garnished following civil lawsuits so long as those assets are in the form of equity in your "primary domicile"
(see: Simpson, OJ as well as ~90% of USA based scam artists)
This is the worst possible outcome for this team -- Moreno will squander the ~11th-14th overall draft pick (just outside the protected top ten) on some ridiculous free agent deal in yet another misguided attempt to "win now"
I was unclear in my original post.
As of today the Angels are 4186-4199 as a franchise, or 13 games below .500. The Angls would need to finish more than 10 game above .500 this season to be over .500 as a franchise.
Mike Trout will be with the Angels at least 5 more years (including this one). The Angels are pretty much locked in to the current team they have for the next year years, which will likely mean playing at approximately .500 level baseball for the forseeable future.
This is the outcome I expected from the beginning. Manslaughter is probably the appropriate charge but could see an acquittal based on how poorly the case was handled from the prosecutions POV in trial.
I never expected the "stand your ground" motion to go through (despite the prior hype about it) so Zimmerman won't be shielded from civil liability after this trial is over.
This actually is the truth here. Trout doesn't have any big high leverage hits because he gets pitched around in high leverage situations, often taking walks and getting stranded.
According to Fangraphs Mike Trout is the least clutch player in baseball by a sizable margin:

In other news... F'n Dan Haren Trade. Saunders kicked our azzes. Corbin is about to improve to 11-1 after pitching a great game today. Only gave up one run (to Segura).
