I’ll probably get roasted for this but if we can’t manage to land a top SP, I wouldn’t hate a Stroman/Montgomery/Hicks off-season, now if they perform is another question altogether.

So is Arte about to have a reactionary move like he did when he missed on Cole?
Hope it’s Yamamoto or Burnes, but after this gut punch I’m not expecting too much.

As much as I love Ohtani, I’m not fully convinced we’d be able to get him back, so if not I’d love for us to throw money at Yamamoto or Snell but I see Imanaga or Stroman as more realistic.

If I remember, Bauer acted like he was going to sign with every fanbase. He was schmoozing it up on social media that winter with every realistic team.
Stroman is kinda batty and obviously has gotten himself into some awkward public situations on social media, but he's really shut up while with the Cubs, so maybe he's found some peace or someone convinced him he needed to focus more on on-the-field than off. I do think there is positive energy there though and that would trend well with Ron's vision and what Perry has said before about clubhouse presence - provided it's positive. Stroman strikes me as a guy who can be so overly-positive it detracts from the message, but again, he's seemed to reel it in the last couple of years.
Mostly I think it's the Perry and Stroman Toronto ties that connect him, plus I don't think he's going to get 5+ years at $25M-$30M annually. MLBTR has him at 2/$44m, perhaps Keuchel's 3/$55.5m. Aligns with Ron's 'window' too. That's absolutely worth the risk and does not become a financial obstacle if it goes south like a Snell or Nola deal (or even Ohtani) deal could.Oh I agree, I’m not against going for him, I just hadn’t heard the part where he’s calmed down with the Cubs which is nice so yeah he’s a solid guy who could be worth a shot at that contract

Gut feeling that's sticking with me today, I think Marcus Stroman is going to be the 'big arm' add. Won't require the huge commitment in years or money, has had really fantastic stretches in his career, would profile well with a strong defensive infield (which I expect with Ron), has expressed a lot of psedo-interest publicly in playing with Trout, and was in Toronto with Perry, just like Thor, Tepera and Loup.
Didn’t he and Bauer both act like they were going to sign with us because of our fanbase and then just completely went in another direction? Not saying it’s everything in this situation as of course coaches and FO are probably the biggest seller to FAs.

So what would it take? Could one of Drury or Rengifo and Sandoval get it done?
I’d love to get Glasnow, but hasn’t he been super injury prone? If we do try for him they would most likely ask for Bachman and/or Joyce as well as some top prospects.

As for the two players to replace Ohtani, it’s a tough call.
Doesn’t sound like they are in on Yamamoto.
As good as Snell is, isn’t he basically a 5 and sometimes 6 inning pitcher due to high pitch counts? Not a fan of big money ($200 million) for that, unless you have a totally deep bullpen
Already have 3 lefties, is it smart having a 4th lefty (Montgomery)? Although they could trade Anderson plus half his salary. Montgomery had been pretty steady before the late season breakthrough in Texas. Will that push his value too high?
Bellinger’s value could be all over the board due to the two subpar years (2021-22) sandwiched between All-Star caliber seasons.
Yeah, I mean they’re all questionable, even Nola has had a couple “clunker” (4+ ERA) seasons lately. Especially since Nola and Snell are 30 now and it’s taking into account later career struggles too.

How about the closer in Japan who is posting, Matsui? Great all around stats and still only age 28
He’s one of my top wants! I guess I’m just looking at SP/Hitter for this to replace/replicate the two things Ohtani does for us.

I think Nola/Bellinger would cost less than Ohtani and although two players, would come close to being as effective.
Considering Ohtani has some serious pitching health concerns and Bellinger is a lot more than a DH I could be convinced Nola and Bellinger is a better path
It just sucks. I really wanted to win with trout and Ohtani.
Yes! That was exactly my thinking here, Ohtani does two jobs and it would take a lot to replace/replicate it. So if we got like Soler and Nola or to take a wild example Yamamoto (who I know we have a minuscule chance at getting) and Teoscar Hernandez

@N-From-OC I don't think the Angels can afford Bellinger but if Ohtani does leave I think you'll see the Angels sign a Jorge Soler type to DH. I think they're good in the OF with Ward, Rengifo, Trout, Moniak and Adell. Having a DH that can occasionally play the OF like Soler allows them to DH Mike Trout more as well.
As far as the starting pitching, I'd like them to go after Blake Snell, Sonny Gray or Jordan Montgomery over Aaron Nola. Wouldn't mind Nola, but that's my order of preference.
Awesome! Thank you for your input. Think we could also try for one of the NPB starters being posted/coming over? I feel they could also substitute in for one of those guys. (Yamamoto at least is, I’ve seen that Imanaga could be in that conversation as well but lesser so)

Basically an “if I were the Angels’ GM” post.
Just a hypothetical question. I posted it on Bleacher report earlier as well. If Ohtani leaves, and again that’s an “if he leaves”, who would be the most realistic players to take over? I’m talking 2:1 since Ohtani is basically two players. For example top of the line minus Ohtani so Nola/Bellinger.

Wonder if this is the new Judge to the Giants? But either way the most boring option for him to go with at this point. I would have even been surprised if it was the Yankees or Dodgers, and that’s saying how much I grew bored of Cohen this month.

sometimes folks around here get inside info. @Second Base has connections. Teams talk about players with other teams quite a bit and we never hear a thing. We've also heard from many here with connections that something is imminent and nothing ever happens. It makes for good fun though regardless.
Good point, I’m still somewhat new to being a member here so I can see how that makes sense. Good fun indeed!

depends on the cost to acquire pearson. Shoulder surgery for Reyes is bothersome.
Fair enough, is there a source of the rumor? I’m curious to see

or make him the closer. I'm thinking it has to be something substantial on our side or they think he's broken. Although I'm not sure why they would as his injuries haven't been overly troublesome. Just a lot of them. (sound familiar?)
You've got me kinda geared up for this one. Very intrigued.
See but in this case shouldn’t we just sign Reyes? Couple years older but the injury bug has bit them both, I will say both have the closer/mid rotation potential if they stay healthy enough

I agree, but it’s like ordering from the del taco value meal with $6.39 in your center console. You make it work.
Definitely but I’d also like to see a Barnhart or Casali signing, not sure how popular that would be around here but I definitely would be interested in Barnhart who is a 2x GG winner and gives O’Hoppe more time to develop. Their bats might not be the best but I believe they can provide defense.

Wacha, andrus, Britton, Alex Reyes, gallo
My only qualms with these players are Andrus and Gallo. Defensive replacement for Gallo, sure but to end up needing him if someone gets hurt and then we’re basically playing Adell with his bat again. Andrus being at his age and having the best season he’s had in many years is certainly a risky thing.

We have basically "traded" pitchers .. Tyler Anderson for Noah Syndergaard.
Now if we can sign say, Eovaldi and trade for a shortstop, if we don’t get Swanson that would be pretty solid but I’m fully expecting us to roll with Fletch and Rengifo.
-
Saw on Trade Rumors the Reds could be shopping shortstop prospects for Outfield prospects, something I think we have a plethora of. Maybe there’s a match there?

For me I’d like one of Swanson or Correa but if that’s not possible then add in other ways to the rotation. One of Stripling, Wacha, Fujinami or Eovaldi. To the Bullpen with one of Rogers, Fulmer, or Knebel/Boxberger. And Make a trade for a shortstop not named Tim Anderson or Tatis as they will want too much for what I’d want to offer them and I hope the FO thinks the same.
-
I will now shut up about Benintendi! I’ve read Renfroe is sold on defense and of course has 25+ HR power so I’m good there, now we need SS.
-
I think that’s the best case for us, the only issue is we have no hope after he comes off the board unless we trade for someone. He’s the healthiest and best hitter there unless Haniger is healthy
-
I’ve said it all over Twitter and Bleacher Report, Benintendi should be our Left Field target. He can hit and he can field, would probably be our best left fielder in a while now.

One guy I’ve wanted, not just now but before he was moved from Toronto. But I just hope it works out if we do sign him.
