Yes. Really annoying.

So now Manny Machado is extended through his league age 40 season. He'll wear a Padres cap in Cooperstown. Great.
I think it's a great business decision also.
Who knows what $34 M looks like in 2033. I mean, ten years from now he will be making $4 M less than Rendon is making this year.
I think Machado will age well and have sustained productivity throughout his 30's..

You weren't.
Great minds think alike!

I’m bigger mad today then I was yesterday and expect to be even bigger mad tomorrow
Why?
What will reverse your progression and make you wake up to a less mad day.
Does Arte need to sell the team for this to happen? What if he keeps the team and the Angels win the World Series? Are you less mad?
I am bullish on the Angels this year but it's because of Minasian and Nevin, not Arte.

His track record also said he’d keep Maddon. His track record said he wouldn’t release Albert.
What is his track record?

I am just guessing that if they’re out of it and they can’t re-sign him, he’ll realize they have gotten everything out of him that they can.
I think there is still more to get out of him now, so it’s a different story.
You should go on ESPN LA radio and explain this to Ireland, Mason, Greg, Travis and Sedano.
They are oblivious to all things Angels.

If they are 6-7 back I figure they will trade him.
But if they’re only 3-4 back, I suspect they’ll keep him and try to get in to the playoffs.
I agree.
I don't think the Angels trade Ohtani unless they are completely out of the playoff race in mid-July.
And I think it will be difficult for the Angels to even compete to sign him in the off-season unless they are fully committed to going over the CBT threshold.
On the positive side they do have $42 M in salary coming off the roster if they decide to part ways with Loup, Tepera, Moore, Renfroe and Urshela. To stay competitive they would need to take $20 M to pay for Ohtani's bump from $30 M to $50 M. and then spread the $22 M raising the floor around him.
Maybe they resign Renfroe and/or Urshela but they need some of the young guys to break out in 2024 (Rodriguez, Joyce, Bachman, Adell, Neto, etc.) and replace the veterans who are becoming free agents.
When the farm becomes your floor instead of free agency you are headed in the right direction as an organization.

Later in the year, he will work with young players at the Angels’ complex in the Dominican Republic.
This is great!!

He should start the season off in the 4th spot.
But baseball is a meritocracy. He needs to earn it to keep it.
He may not even care if he was dropped in the order.

I would just say that it’s tough to be able to have a discussion that will be so meaningful during the season. That probably makes more sense to table it and wait till the end of the season.”
The title of this thread could easily be:
"Ohtani likely to test free agency if he does not sign an extension in spring training."

He would be walking away from 5/$162 M.
I doubt he would get 10/$400 M. but I do think he would be able to re-enter the market and get more than 5/$162 M - maybe 7/$259.
This could also be nothing more than Machado getting it out there to help negotiate an extension with the Padres.

The roster is such that Rendon and others should get enough rest, hopefully that results in better health.
I agree. This is exactly what Minasian did this Winter. He created depth giving Nevin options.

What exactly are you talking about?
When players and coaches have to field questions about other players. For example, Lebron fielding questions about Westbrook earlier this month. I don't see it being an issue here because, as you said, he rarely talks to the media.
I just think Rendon didn't need to say the things he did.

The personal-services deal essentially gives the Angels exclusive rights to Pujols during the first 10 years of his retirement. When asked if it would preclude Pujols from doing similar work for the St. Louis Cardinals, the team Pujols starred with for 11 years before signing with the Angels, Carpino said, “Possibly.”
This was from an LA times article last November. The article also stated that Pujols can terminate the contract at any time.

Trust me, you don’t need to worry about Rendon seeking out the media to pop off. He pretty much hates the media and would prefer to never speak to us. He does about one interview a month.
Good to know.
I hope the media doesn't ask other players about him when he is in his self imposed cocoon. I've seen it happen in other situations and the clubhouse doesn't need the distraction.

Yep, I meant to say the Rays. They were the #6 seed last year with 86 wins.
I agree. 90 should get us in.

Obviously every season is different but you can't compare 2011/2012 to 2022. The playoff format expanded from 10 to 12 teams last year.
Division games are going from 19 to 13 games this year. I wonder if the PECOTA number is factoring that change into the number.
As to a low seed advancing, the Phillies were the #6 seed last year...
