  1. UPDATE: Shohei still clearly leads the Angels but no longer the Majors with 2.8 bWAR (4th behind Semien, Acuna and Robert on 2.9) and 2.2 fWAR (9th - Acuna leads with 2.6 fWAR). Mike Trout is currently languishing in 34th place for fWAR with 1.8 fWAR and 1.5 bWAR. Second on the team for both. Estevez has a stellar 1.4 bWAR / 0.9 fWAR, with Moore just behind on 1.2 bWAR / 0.3 fWAR. Detmers is a WAR curiosity, with a full 1.0 fWAR, but a negative 0.1 bWAR. Go figure, as you guys like to say. Mickey The Masher Moniak has crashed into the Majors with 0.9 bWAR / 0.8 fWAR from just ten games (8 starts) - that's 15 bWAR pace, so unless he's channeling namesake Mantle we can expect that to flatten out quite a bit. Neto has been almost as impressive, racking up 1.0 bWAR in just 35 starts. That's good for joint 5th on the team, level with Barria. 2. 13 - Delivering newspapers (the paper bag was bigger than me on Sundays with all the supplements). £2.80 per week. 16 - Working on a fruit and vegetable stall in a supermarket while at college. The job that put muscles on my skinny frame, I could barely lift a 60lb bag of potatoes when I started, by 17 I was carrying three at a time. Stayed for three years and became trainee manager of the whole store at 19. The pay was £1.23 per hour at 16, and I could go out and get drunk on a night out for £5. Fun times.
  3. The Sabermetricians don't factor into their thinking that this is an entertainment business built on the back on a sport, not just a sport. It may well be more efficient to always swing for the fences, and be more efficient not to steal bases or try for the extra base, and that all may lead to more wins overall, but it's incredibly boring to watch. The first thing that attracted me to the Angels was the way they played baseball during Scioscia's early years. It was dynamic and interesting, with lots of moving parts and on-field action, and you could see how frustrating they were to play against by the body language of the opposing players, chasing bunts, slaps into the gaps and line drives into the channels as the Angels batted around, again. We had line-ups full of players with .300 averages that were a nightmare for opposing pitchers on the bases and almost always challenged the fielders to execute perfectly or lose an extra base. Great fun to watch, even when they lost. Re the RBI thing: a 'Clutch' metric would be handy, showing a ratio of opportunities to successes with runners on base and RISP. The detail is already recorded for each player (here are Trout's stats https://www.mlb.com/player/mike-trout-545361?stats=splits-r-hitting-mlb&year=2023), just need a way to manipulate the ROB/RISP figures into a common product and then give it a cool name.
  4. That's a complete non-sequitur, if you're going to jump into someone else's conversation at least try to be relevant.
  5. Lots of people going, "Aaahh, so that's how it's done".
  6. Unless Perry can pull off a couple of trades, to replace injured O'Hoppe with something considerably better than hoping Thaiss will get better, and for some high quality bull-pen help.
  7. Does that matter as much as the worrying thought that he is in the hands of a medical team with a pretty poor history. They're a bit rubbish really, aren't they? They never get anyone back early, and don't have the best record for getting players back on schedule and then keeping them on the team. I wouldn't let them treat my cat, let alone put the future of a multi-million dollar sports career in their hands.
  8. We're Angels fans, from a place where pitchers literally puke live on the mound and 'dehydration' can mean Tommy-John, we know better than to expect nice things.
  9. PM me after the Summer. A horse racing meeting might be a fun day out.
  10. Can't believe we still let you in. I've written, I've called, even dobbed you in to M.I. whatever number but nobody seems to be listening. British bureaucracy just isn't what it used to be. So, where in the country are you headed to, this time?
  11. The Guinness looks great, the stew looks a bit uninspiring. Was it any good?
  12. A must-do for any genuine British holiday itinerary.
  13. Even nicer still would be Irish Stew and a pint of Guinness:
  14. Welcome to AW, @Chico. If some of your life choices are anything to go by, I'm looking forward to your posts.
  15. We should use this tread as a depository for all the bs click-bait articles that will be posted between now and the trade deadline about how Shohei is definitely leaving the Angels. There will be hundreds of them.
  16. A nice week from Cabbage, over the last 7 games (mostly against Oakland): 12/30 H/AB's for a .400 average, with three doubles and three Hr's and two steals contributing to his 8 runs and 8 RBI's, with no walks and 7 strike-outs across the week. Played 5 games at 1B, 2 at DH.
