It seems to most of us that it's an overpay. The question is why?

A: The new FO is really stupid.

B: They really like Cobb a lot, hopefully see something everyone else is missing in him, and are willing to give up a prospect they aren't high on to get him.

C : A or B is true, AND They're really short of cash in the budget and he's the only one they could afford that they like that much.

Hopefully the best case version of B is true.

Even if you get more out of the guy in retrospect, paying more than he's worth to a desperate team willing to unload him is outright stupid.

Also, @Second Base, you might like this. From the same article:

"It’s more conceptual than statistical. Cobb’s a legitimate veteran leader. He learned from pitchers such as James Shields and David Price when he was in Tampa and took that role seriously. Some pitchers are labeled as “leaders,” but really aren’t. Cobb, however, loved talking pitching and gave the young guys all the time they needed."

He also notes putting up a 4.30 in the AL East isn't easy. And, I would add, he didn't get the benefit of pitching to the Orioles.

All valid points, the trade isn't as bad as it looks, he's like a pitching coach under the pitching coach, also a pretty reliable starter that should benefit in the AL West.  I think expectations have just be subverted greatly, Bauer is not coming here, it's pretty much a sure thing.

Even if is just Cobb, much like Quintana, if he gives us 30 GS/180 IP, 4.25 ERA, we're in good shape.

You can't get away with that in 5 of your fucking STARTING PITCHERS, that screams mediocrity!

I thought we were trying to win here.... I guess not.  I assume they don't expect to win any postseason games with these unremarkable pitching trades/signings.  Bauer is definitely not coming here, he doesn't like Mickey Calloway.
