  1. Arte Moreno says he wants to win, yet they haven't done much winning the past 10 seasons. Yes, his objective is to make money first and foremost, but he also wants to win, and he's failed to do that the past decade.
  2. It's the people making the decisions that's important, but in order to get the right people to make those decisions, you usually have to pouch those executives from other organizations. That's where the titles come into play, because that (along with offering more money) is how you get those people to join your team. The Angels haven't hired anyone that would necessitate the PBO title, and that's' the problem. Instead of trying to poach a proven executive, they always go after first time GM's.
  3. Also, having both a PBO and GM shows that the owner is willing to spend money in the baseball operations department. If the Angels get both a PBO and GM, it suggests that Arte has realized that the way he was running the organization hasn't worked and that he is trying what the successful teams have done in recent years.
  4. I think people's fascination with this is because the teams that have both a PBO and GM are better run organizations and ultimately have more success than the teams that don't have both. The teams that currently have a PBO and GM are BOS, CHC, CHW, CLE, MIN, OAK, SF, and STL. CHC, CLE, MIN, OAK, and STL have had sustained success within the past few seasons. CHW just had their first successful season and look primed to carry it on. BOS and SF were smart and started following these organizations models in the past couple years so that they can build up to be what those other teams have become. Not to mention that LAD (who is the best example of sustaining success) had a PBO and GM before Zaidi left to run SF. Also, CIN had a PBO and GM before Dick Williams left the organization and they seem to fall in the same category as the CHW.
  5. And until we see Arte Moreno actually hire a former GM, I'm not convinced that he will do so. The Angels lack of President of Baseball Ops is because of Arte, as he hasn't hired anyone needs the PBO title in order to be poached.
  6. I have the same feeling. They aren't going to use the modern structure because Arte Moreno doesn't like it and isn't willing to use it.
  7. When the Angels hired Dipoto in 2011, it was reported that Eppler was the runner-up. Eppler obviously ended up getting the job in 2015 after Dipoto left. That makes me wonder if the candidates who interviewed for the job in 2015 are going to have a leg up this time around, just like Eppler had a leg up in 2015 because of his 2011 interview. From what I can find, the other candidates in 2015 included Chris Gwynn, Mike Hazen, Matt Klentak, Scott Servais, Hal Morris, Josh Brynes, Tony LaCava, and Ross Atkins. I have no clue what Gwynn and Morris are doing, so I'd assume there is no chance that either of them are a candidate. Hazen is the Diamondbacks GM, so he isn't a candidate. Klentak was fired by the Phillies and failed to build a winner in Philadelphia, so he likely isn't a candidate. Servais is the Mariners Manager, so he isn't a candidate. Atkins is the Blue Jays GM, so he isn't a candidate. That leaves Brynes and LaCava. Neither has been confirmed as a candidate this time around, but they have both been linked to the GM job, so perhaps one, or both, of them could be a favorite this time around.
  8. Jo Adell's value has dropped, and there's a simple reason why: While Adell still has the same potential, this past season shows that he still needs to develop more before he starts performing well. He has 6 years of control, but he may not be a solid contributor until he has 4 or 5 years of control left, because we saw that he still needs to develop. That severely hurts his value, because teams weigh what production they are getting during team control, and not just the number of years of control. Simply put, Jo Adell with 6 years of good production has more value than Jo Adell with 4-5 years of good production and 1-2 years of development.
  9. Could the Angels option Shohei Ohtani for a few weeks at the start of the 2021 season to limit the service time he gets and therefore gain an extra year of control? He still has options left, and it would allow him to throw rehab games in the minors to help him build back up. I know they didn't want to do it back in 2018, but things have changed. It's not like his performance in 2020 proved that he deserves a spot on the opening day roster. Also, Eppler was the one who had a good relationship with Ohtani. With a new GM coming in, that GM isn't going to have the same attachment to Ohtani.
  10. I wonder if Ron Roenicke winds up back on the Angels coaching staff. We've seen it before, and I'd imagine he and Joe Maddon are friends.
  11. Martone was going to be gone because he came with Eppler from NY. Strangio was a holdover from the Dipoto regime, but he left the organization because he was moving to the east coast for family reasons. The only blame you can put on the Angels is that they didn't hire a GM before the contracts of Strangio and Martone expired. They already knew Strangio was leaving, and they also knew that they weren't bringing Martone back because he was an Eppler guy.
  12. The Angels need pitching, but they need to keep their options open. If Lindor comes cheap because Cleveland is desperate to move payroll, they need to be ready to take advantage because players of Lindor's caliber aren't available often.
  13. Getting a position player who is capable of playing 2B and a corner OF spot would be huge for the Angels because it allows them to play that player and whoever is the best among: Adell, Barreto Jones, Marsh, Thaiss, and Ward.
  14. Michael Hill is moving on to the 2nd round of interviews, according to Jon Heyman (on his Big Time Baseball podcast).
  15. Scott Downs, Joe Smith, and Cody Allen are the only ones that come to mind from the past decade.
  16. Former Mets GM Jim Duquette on MLB Radio. He also mentioned a few days ago that he heard there was going to be at least 15 people interviewing for the GM job, and they are at least at 14 now, so that makes me think that the information he's getting is correct since his previous information was also correct.
  17. Kevin Gausman is getting a qualifying offer from the Giants. It seems like he's either going to accept it or work out a contract extension with the Giants, so he's seemingly a free agent option off the board for the Angels.
  18. I heard that Carpino is handling the first round of interviews and Arte will be present for the second round of interviews. I don't know if anyone is assisting Carpino, though.
  19. I wonder if Eric Chavez is also going to leave the organization, as he was another guy that came over from the Yankees shortly after Eppler was hired.
  20. Like some others have said, my preference would be for Bane to come back in a role other than GM. They can easily find a position for him, whether it's AGM, VP of Scouting, or something like that.
  21. I would be to, but the Mets MLB.com reporter said otherwise. https://twitter.com/AnthonyDiComo/status/1322632862240301065?s=20
  22. There is also Steve Martone, who is an assistant GM, but he came with Eppler from NYY when Eppler was hired, so he may be gone too.
  23. 1- Non-tender Justin Anderson, Matt Andriese, and Hansel Robles. (Amounts to roughly $6.5 million saved) 2- Acquire German Marquez ($7.8M) from COL in exchange for Jo Adell, Jose Suarez, Jahmai Jones, and Hector Yan. (Note: the values didn't match up for this trade, but I feel like Marquez's value may be inflated on the website. The Rockies are getting a consensus top 5 prospect in MLB heading into 2020, a potential back-end starter, and two top 10 Angels prospects.) 3- Sign Liam Hendriks- 3/$36M. (Structure is $10.5M/$12.5M/$13M) 4- Sign Trevor May- 2/$12M. (Structure is $5.5M/$6.5M) 5- Sign Jose Álvarez- 2/$10M. (Structure is $4.5M/$5.5M) 6- Acquire Joey Wendle ($1.6M) from TB in exchange for Keynan Middleton (-1M) and Jose Soriano. 7- Sign Kevin Pillar- 1/$5M 8- Sign Alex Avila- 1/$2.5M. The total money spent is 37.5M, with 7.5M being saved through trading Middleton and non-tendering Anderson, Andriese, and Robles. Avila/Walsh/Wendle/Fletcher/Rendon/Upton/Trout/Pillar/Ohtani Stassi/Barreto/Ward/Pujols Marquez/Bundy/Heaney/Canning/Barrria Hendriks/May/Mayers/Peña/Alvarez/Buttrey/Ramirez/Sandoval
  24. I agree with this. Also, it would cost Arte more money to hire both a PBO and GM. So that's another reason as to why it's not gonna happen.
