398 innings, -2.9 WAR.
Keuchel would be a big upgrade over that... but a 6-man rotation will limit Keuchel’s innings, though.
I wonder how free agents and potential trade targets even feel about the Angels’ plan for a 6-man rotation? Would they be ok with that?

Me too. At this point, I wouldn't object to paying a steep price for him (say, Marsh and Rengifo).
One great thing about trading for Gray (besides that he’s good and under club control for a few seasons) is that he’s only projected to earn $5.6 million next year. That could give the Angels flexibility to add a catcher and maybe some bullpen arms.

I’m okay with Ryu ... he pitched close to 200 innings with a era of 2.32. What’s not to like? I think the Dodgers will sign him.
182.2 innings isn’t really close to 200. And the previous two years he’s averaged under 6 innings per start.

But not Ryu, if it’s for $25-30 million/season.
Agreed. He also can’t be trusted to stay healthy. Plus he won’t give a team too many innings regardless. Seems like a 5-6 innings per start pitcher on most years.

Jon Gray would be my choice. He probably won’t be cheap, though.

I don't like Keuchel's 4.72 FIP. He'd probably out-perform that with ERA, but I don't see him as more than a solid 2-3 WAR pitcher. A good #4, mediocre #3.
I don’t like how many home runs he gives up for a ground-ball pitcher.
Even if the Angels signed him, they’d still need to trade for someone better than that (unless they signed Ryu also).
-
Great news. I was hoping the Angels wouldn’t sign him.

Delino DeShields is a bench player at best who put up horrible offensive numbers in that bandbox.
Yea, Kluber is probably damaged goods.

Many other teams could’ve sweetened the deal and sent more talent and no team did.

Well that sucks. I would've gladly traded Goodwin and Buttrey for Kluber.
Yea, but if that’s all it was going to take, then that’s a red flag. Nobody trades an ace on an affordable contract for just that. The Indians probably think he’s done being an ace.

Hot take: Keuchel isn't very good. Yes, he's better than what the Angels had last year, but he's really an innings eater who gives up a lot of hits.
True. He gives up a lot of home runs for a ground ball pitcher, too.
Ideally, the Angels would acquire someone better than Keuchel, but they can also do far worse.
Maybe they can sign Keuchel and trade for another starter who is better than Keuchel.
-
I hope they traded some pretty good prospects for damaged goods.

Angels never had a chance with the names being mentioned here. Kluber will be packaged with at least one top 100 prospect.
They can afford him, but they’re not in a position to really gut the farm system for a risky pitcher. I’d rather they just sign Keuchel and keep their prospects. And maybe look to make a trade for someone who won’t be as costly or risky.
-
Anyway, I’m done with this discussion.

Just stop dude. This premise is one of the most obscure things I have ever seen here right up there with "Jesus was an ass birth"
Both teams will be good and in contention. The Yankees have a more complete team to compete for championships in the coming years.
All you had to do was say “I don’t know”. Which would’ve validated made my point that his decision was short-sighted. Basing your decision on wanting to win a WS when your contract is for 9 years is stupid. He has no idea how his team will look in 2021 and beyond. Or how the Angels would’ve looked. Or any other team, really.

So who would you sign with if you were him?
Irrelevant. But I wouldn’t use the reasoning of wanting to win a WS on a 9 year contract, that’s for sure. Because how a team looks like in one year doesn’t mean that’s how they’ll look like the next year...and never mind 9 years.
His reasoning was short-sighted, simple. He couldn’t have possibly known whether the Yankees would’ve given him the best chance to win a WS over the duration of his contract.

Even for AW standards, this is pretty ridiculous.
Are the Yankees going to be a better team or have more chances than the Angels to win a WS from 2021-2028?
Please answer that question.

Fart sound
Well, ****. But it makes sense. Those other teams can probably offer more and the Angels aren’t about to overpay on a risky pitcher.

Now I feel bad for Rendon. He has no idea what the bullpen will look like in a couple years.
Rendon didn’t specifically say he chose the Angels because he felt they would’ve given him the best chance to win a WS, haha.

Saying it over and over doesn’t make your point any less ridiculous.
It’s simple logic

Clearly he should only have signed a one year contract because he’s not Nostradamus. Forget the security of a long term fully guaranteed contract when 2021 could be an issue.
Nah. I’m saying his reasoning is short-sighted. Which it is. If the Angels win multiple WS from 2021-2028 and the Yankees zero, his decision will look stupid. But that’s the point: he couldn’t have known.

Makes sense. It's probably better to not sign anywhere because of variables every player and teams have to deal with.
Probably shouldn't have signed with the Yankees because he doesn't know what the lineup will look like in 2025.
Great post.
Well, his goal is to win WS, no? That is short-sighted given that he doesn’t have a clue who he will even play with in 2021 and beyond or how the Angels would’ve looked like or any other team. It makes sense for 2020, though. I’ll give him that.
-
Just now, Brandon said:
You can say that for every team. It doesn't mean he should pick the Angels. The Yankees are always going to be competitive, it's not like he blew us off for the Royals.
I don't even understand your original point.
My point was simple. If he’s looking for the best chance to win a WS in 2020, then he probably made the right decision. If he’s looking for the best chance to win a WS from 2021-2028, then he took a gamble based on a hunch. He doesn’t even know who will be his teammates in 2021 and beyond or who the Angels will have at that point. Or how the rest of MLB will look. Things can change fast.
Trade candidates: Gray, Ray, Mets SP...

Ray wouldn’t be horrible, but do they really want someone who only averaged around 5.1 innings per start last season and has trouble throwing strikes? The bullpen will be taxed on most days when he starts.
