This proposed trade would hurt us in two ways.  Kiermeier would only exacerbate our outfield logjam.  Upton is a sunk cost and there's no way we're paying him $20M a year to be a part-time player.  And even if you keep him in left and put Trout in right, then where in the world are you putting Adell and Marsh?

Not only that, but you're also dealing away three of the best prospects in a fairly shallow minor leagues system?  Hell no.

Well, the idea is that we have Trout-Kiermeier-Upton this year, then Trout-Kiermeier-Marsh next year (with Upton sliding into a DH/4th OF/Backup 1B (?) role).

We also wouldn't have to worry about Adell, since the Rays would probably want the guy we traded to them playing in their OF.

Thinking outside the box a little bit, I read that Joe Musgrove and Adam Frazier are getting a lot of hits in trade talks with the Pirates.

Frazier has played a decent amount of time in RF, though most of it earlier in his career. He’s a lefty who has a solid .774 OPS against righties, is under control for two more years, and will cost around $4m in arb.

Musgrove has been speculated on here a ton, and I think with Minasian on board now he’s even more of a target. He was drafted by Toronto when Perry was there, and the Braves were interested in him in trade talks. Parting with an elite package for Musgrove might be a little risky, but expanding it to add a reliever, Stallings, or perhaps now Frazier as a UT guy and platoon option with Ward could be another scenario.

Its funny -- we could actually hit nearly all of our offseason needs in one trade with the Pirates. We could get: Musgrove, Taillion, Frazier and a reliever (Richard Rodriguez seems pretty good). Sure, it would cost us a ton of prospects (Adell wouldn't be enough on his own), but it would be fairly cost-effective - 9 Million Bucks for the lot. We could then sign Realmuto+ Hand/Bradley and suddenly, we have a killer offense, killer bullpen, and a deep (if average-ish) rotation. I mean, look at this lineup:

    • 2B - Fletcher            P1 - Musgrove
    • CF - Trout                 P2 - Bundy
    • 3B - Rendon             P3 - Heany
    • DH - Ohtani              P4 - Taillon
    • 1B - Walsh                 P5 - Canning
    • RF - Upton                P6 - Ohtani
    • LF - Frazier               CL - Iglasias
    • SS - Iglasias              SU - Hand
    • Bench: Pujols, Stassi, Rengifo
    • RP - Mayers, Buttry, Rodriguez, Pena, Sandoval

Alternatively, we could still sign Bauer and flip a pitcher in a package for another reliever/starter/catcher as needed. I wouldn't do this (I am not a Taillion fan at all, and I think the Pirates want a bunch to get him) , but it would solve a ton of issues we have.

You're obsessed with this opinion which you refuse to realize is a bad baseball take. I noticed you asked about Ohtani in RF  in a MLB Traderumors Q & A and he said  the same thing we're all saying here. Let it go man. Move on to a new topic.

Another way to say it -- he way too damn good as a pitcher for them to throw in the towel. He probably has one more year as a starter at least, and if that messes up he has another two-three as a reliever before they just move him to the field.

If anyone was going to figure out how to drastically increase their spin rate legally it would be Bauer

I mean -- I think it's more likely he found a new grip (or at least one that works the best for him) that he uses in the same way everyone else does. I wouldn't put it past a petty-ass manager to try and call him out in a game since he has been pretty vocal about it, but most of the league it too scared of touching the matter.

Snell pitched will enough last year to tell us two things. 1 - His down year in 2019 was a small blip in what will otherwise be a strong run through his prime years. 2 - That 1.89 ERA in 2018, will likely be the high point of his career. Very very rarely is a pitcher that good for an extended period of time. So ultimately, I expect Snell will likely be a 4-win pitcher on a yearly basis.

Crap -- I re-read the rule book, and I am pretty sure the Angels aren't allowed to have a pitcher with a WAR above 2.

Seriously, though, this is spot on-- I wouldn't be surprised if Marsh wasn't slightly more valuable than Adell at all -- even if Adell has a much higher probability of hitting 40 Hrs/ season. I also have Snell pegged *slightly* lower at 3.2 WAR/ 162 gms. Still, though: compared to our #5 starters over the past 5 years (which he would really be replacing), it will feel like early-aught's Pedro is leading our rotation.

Trevor Bauer may be an ace, but he seems to be a douche bag and character matters to Perry Minasian.

I am pretty certain that winning also matters to Perry.
I don't care how much a GM of any team speaks about character and targets high-character guys -- there is always a talent level that will override those concerns.  Besides; Bauer is more "Twitter Troll" than "bad teammate," from what I can tell.

I even think Buttrey might be better this year as he won't get worn out in the second half of the season from overuse.

Me too. We definitely need more depth, but Iglesias-Mayers-rested Buttrey feels like a solid step forward already. I'd still like to see us get another sure thing and another "talent" play (like Luke Bard but... good), but I am cautiously optimistic we can get back to average.

First of, having Maddon over Ausmus is big. that already add a few extra wins.

Ohtani in your rotation is big. He's a true number 1!

Our BP was key last year early on, and win we needs. If Buttery can bounce back to 1st half 2019 form, along with the rest of the guys we'll be in a good spot.

I fully Expect Heaney to bounce back and be a 3.

trout will probably miss a few games, and i expect the other guys to step up.

Canning, Bundy and Teheran are going to be the dark horse for us.

Canning has the 2nd best stuff after ohtani. He's a 2/3.

Bundy, reports in spring training was that he was hitting 95, which is huge for a guy that lost velo.

Teheran, feels to me like he'll either be good or a bust, nothing in between.

My view is that Ohtani will, at worst, be a really good #2-type starter (easily the ace). Canning/Bundy/Heany will probably average out as three #3 starters.  I half suspect Teheran is going to fall off a cliff, but there is almost no way that he's not better than whatever we were trotting out at the end of last season. I think Sandoval will end up being a surprise, locking up a spot in the rotation -- both this year and next.

Our 6 Man staff approach f worries me.  Not only am I worried about Teheran, but one stretch of missed games from anyone will be tough to watch. I just hope to God that Suarez or Andriese can put together 3-4 starts when the time comes.

On the flip side there plenty more HS and College arms who are drafted because of velo or because they have a combination of good velo and one secondary pitch, but because they've never developed a third pitch, whether it's a changeup or a breaking ball their two-pitch repertoire doesn't go far in the majors as a starting pitcher and they either don't make it to the big leagues or they do as a reliever.

So you mean that there is more than one way to reach the majors? Are you sure?

  10. I wanted Crochet, but mostly because I was assuming Detmers was gone by 10.

This was the pick they had to make. If you could come up with a reasonable wish list for what the Angels would get at #10, it would probably look a lot like Detmers:

    • A college pitcher that can rise quickly (over under on his first start is 18 months)
    • Has a clean delivery and a clean injury history (important because Angels)
    • Has  + command, + control, and a fiery attitude (missing this since Weaver)
    • Has three good pitches, with some  development left (Cutter might be a legit 4th pitch, or he could add a couple of ticks to his FB, or both).

I'd be shocked if he was lower than 4th on their board.

There is also a lot more teams and players now. Baseball is also more international now. What percentage of players were HOF in the 60s compared to today would probably be a better judge. I personally think Lofton, Grich and Whitaker are better than a lot of players already in.

Whitaker absolutely should be in. Grich should probably be in. Lofton probably shouldn't, but he wouldn't be the worst player to make it,

The movie had this backward. Thumbs down meant "bury the sword in the sand."

It's more complicated, actually. There is no clear evidence which way meant what. It's not even clear that they even did "thumbs down" like that; it's more probable they would use thumbs up to kill, then wrap their fingers around their thumb for sparing a life. But anything is possible because no one  bothered to write it down.

Yea, I think Rengifo is going to be pretty good.

Even so, you have to make this deal. Not only because Rengifo isn't going to play that much here (especially if we we extend Simmons at some point), but also because our return (Stripling and Pederson should be worth about 5-6 WAR next year; Stripling is old but controllable, and Pages looks like a pretty decent gamble) is too good.

Pederson is a FA at the end of this season so there is no impact on Marsh unless he tears it up in AAA. Marsh should be starting in RF by 2021 with Adell in LF.

My big Question is who plays RF against Lefties this season? Pederson is totally useless against southpaws.

If memory serves, Goodwin crushes lefties.

EDIT: Yup. .844 OPS the past three years vs. lefties.
