Exactamente, and I woulda hated it unless the Halos and Burnes worked out a Gerrit Cole-esque deal, and even then, ugh. But it could've been early enough in the offseason to move to an alternative for 1B or SS.

They couldn't make a move like that after shipping Bush and Quero to the White Sox for Giolito. I wonder if that would've been enough in the offseason to get Burnes.

I don't love it at all, but signing Bellinger does allow the club some flexibility in considering moving someone like Schanuel, Rada, or Moniak as a key piece in a trade for a SP. Not necessarily this winter.

Before they signed Hoskins I had this bad feeling Milwaukee was asking for either Schanuel or Neto as the first name in a Burnes deal.

I 100% think that was the price for Burnes which is why it isn't done.

To clarify, I really like Ward. This is just based on signing Bellinger, in which case we'd have Bellinger in CF, Trout, Ward and Moniak/Adell. To me it's a choice between trading Moniak or Ward, and I'd rather keep Moniak for a few reasons. He is younger and more likely to improve, he's a better fielder, he's a lefty, and he has more years of control. Ward is already 30, and while he has 3 years of control, he's 33 at that point and then what? Moniak starts this year at 25.

I think signing Bellinger is one of the only avenues left where we can truly improve the team in a meaningful way. It helps the lineup because as it is right now, I feel like Moniak bats 6th. With Bellinger in the lineup, he can move down a spot and have less pressure to hit.

If you dont trade Ward, Bellinger plays 30-40 games at 1st and 20 at DH too likely in this scenario. Schanuel and Drury getting the remainder.

But yeah, you'd be expecting Trout and Bellinger to get 110 games in the OF each, leaving 260 or so for Ward, Adell, and Moniak.

That's not quite enough for all three but if you add 90 DH games, you'd be at 350/3 = 110-115 starts each.

I don't see how they could realistically go with a 6 man rotation since that would reduce the number of RPs by 1.

Ohtani did not count against the roster pitcher requirements.

Starters would have to go deeper and they'd have a 7 man pen. 7 man pens used to be quite common like when the Angels won the World Series, they had 7 most of that year, with their Bench being Gil, Palmiero, Fabregas and either Nieves, Ochoa or a third catcher.

Their pen was Percy, Shields, Donnelly, Levine, Weber, Pote and Cook. Schoeneweis shifted to the pen midseason, and Cook was gone.

Houck is rated as having a 18.5 Value at BTV, whereas Rengifo is at 0.5.

Now I've said that this is a bit ridiculous seeing as he has three arbitration years and he did improve somewhat last season. A good season and his value would likely be similar. But as of right now, I don't think this is enough. I've said in other threads if they re-examined him, his value would spike to 11-12 on their value chart. But that still wouldn't be enough.

It has been re-evaluated and it's still not enough. Houck is valued at 22.1 Surplus now and Rengifo is 13.7.

21 starts at 5.01 ERA last year, whereas Rengifo had a .783 OPS of an OPS+ 111

to be fair, it was kind of hard for them to ever attain that with a 6-man rotation. But I agree that it's optimistic, or at least unreasonable to pencil them in for that.

180 IP is pretty tough for most SPs to reach these days.

I'm just saying 180 over 32 starts is just a hair under where Canning was at 5.625 innings per start, or 5.2 if you count that way. (5.1, 5.2, etc.).

People call him a 5 inning pitcher, but in reality he's just the new norm.

    Sounds like 180-185ish.

Spotrac has the actual payroll at $151 M.

The Lux Tax payroll at 185. They say they have $65M in space before the Tax Threshold, but it can't be that much can it?

Detmers, Sandoval, and Anderson should be able to make around 30-33 starts and pitch at least 170 innings.

Canning might be able to reach the minimum 162 innings, but more likely around 150 innings.

Silseth is the one that might be difficult to stretch out to at least 150 innings, due to a lack of innings in his past.

They've not been anywhere near this for their entire career, why do you think they would get there?

And Snell pitched 180 innings and people are worried about his length.

That actually doesn't really affect the Angels. They have a contract with the organization, not the ballpark. For example, the Angels A Ball affiliate used to be the Cedar Rapids Kernels. When they went their separate ways, the Kernels didn't cease to exist. They worked out a deal with the Twins.

I'm hoping the Angels leave the Northwest League altogether soon, but it doesn't seem like that will be the case. Since minor league restructuring, trans have much less say over where their affiliates play, and most of the West Coast teams use the NWL for high A.

NWL should be the low A.

I'm convinced Wild Card in the AL is going to require 90+ wins. So if the question is, " what needs to happen to make an Ohtani-less Angels a 90 win team?" Well, basically everything needs to go right.

    - Trout and Rendon need to have 500 at bats each, not total.

    - No significant injuries to anyone in the rotation or bullpen.

    - Rotation needs to perform up to their potential.

    - The offense would need breakouts from all the youngsters, O'Hoppe, Thaiss, Neto, Schanuel, Adell, Moniak...

    - The Angels would need to add serious talent, either in free agency or at the deadline that includes a legit MOTO bat and an ace.

They do ALL of that, then I think they might win 90 games.

Agreed, totally but they have minor issues that can be fixed in Free Agency (And one Major Issue) as I stated in my OP,

    1) The Addition of a bat like Bellinger mitigates the need for Rendon to have 500 (productive) AB's, you have two legit MOTO hitters, one from each side if you sign Bellinger.

    2) Of Course

    3) Yes, but adding another starter means you dont need them all to perform, it gives you depth so you dont have to rely on the bottom of the rotation/ AAA guys too much.

    4) Adding a Bench bat with pop means all of the youngsters dont need to breakout, only a few of them

    5) Oh you said it all.

  12. Nah, you got to take a stand somewhere. I know Bauer's accuser was full of it, but she still had bruises and such from (consensual) rough sex. Even if she liked getting beat up during sex you gotta wonder why the guy doing it is okay with it. (or why he likes it)...still if he isnt gonna face suspension, maybe...

Urias is different...But this is Urias' second DV incident and he could still face Misdemeanor charges and even a 1 year suspension by the league.

For me, hitting a woman for any reason is just not ok. The Angels shouldn't tolerate this either with all the bad press they have already.

  13. Are they limited to 4 uniforms again? Anyone know? I like the City Connect but does this mean they wont be wearing that at all?

The one I dislike a lot is the road grey. It's just boring. Uniwatch agrees..says they should wear their red tops on the road, always... I'm assuming unless the home team in those games wears red as their primary or alternate home jersey. Which I think only the Rangers, Red Sox and Reds do. Phillies are apparently ditching the red for 2024 and they play here anyway. D'Backs have an alternate red.

They had a four plus one rule for 2023, meaning, Home, Road, and two Alternates. Some of you hate the red, but I like the red with road or home pants.

If it were up to me, I'd do the Home Whites, Make Red and Grey Road Primary but also wear the Red with the White pants at home like on Fridays or something. Then you have the alternate which is cool 70's throwback apparently, and the city connect, leaving one more alternate, in which I would do a 90's throwback Navy Blue top, but with the current "A" logo instead of the CA, which I do love.
