It's not just about impressing people. It's as much if not significantly more about angering people. Even if the decision by Trump to bar trans people was incorrect (along with many other things), the legal decision is probably valid. The US military is by necessity generally separate from the constitutional protections it is intended to protect. The 1st amendment being the obvious example. It's hard to imagine equal protection under the law being strictly applied to an entity that arbitrarily sends people into combat. That being said however, the military and especially the CiC should better try to apply the principles of liberty in our country to those serving.

A moderate/pseudo-Republican in HRC who the right wing machine effectively portrayed as a socialist to their base. While a candidate more left of center will certainly energize the Democratic base and perhaps do the best, let's not discount what the RWM could against someone who actually IS sympathetic to socialism.

There are too many HRC partisans in the part who loathe anything Sanders, especially by women, who blame him almost as much as Trump for her loss. It's not rational but a deeply personal emotional response by many. Someone similar to Sanders who doesn't have that baggage could do quite well though.

If I've learned anything working at a national lab, it's that being highly educated and intelligent can only take you so far. For most, there isn't an interest in being knowledgeable in matters that don't interest them. And politics outside the cult of personality (song is in your head now I bet) interests only a small percentage.
