  1. From 2008 to 2013 Santana has had the best slider in the game (pitch value-fangraphs). There was never a question about his stuff. The problem was that over that same 5+ years his fastball was the 2nd worst pitch in the game. It was clear that after losing so much velocity (elbow problems) after 2008 that his fb was no longer a plus pitch. It quickly turned into a homerun pitch but no changes were made. No change to a cutter or 2 seamer. No additional reliance on a change. Just keep throwing it. He kept throwing the fb about 56% to 58% of the time. This year he's throwing the fb only 43.7% of the time but has added a 2 seamer (11.9%) and he's throwing the slider a career high 40.7% of the time. Nice adjustment.

  3. It was time for Scioscia to leave the minute he gave that ridiculous interview following the Hatcher firing. He looked like a damn wet hen. White knucklin and eyes rolling. How do you repay the owner who gave you an unprecedented 10 year contract? You try to undermine his new choice as GM, that's how. Instead of being a pro and supporting the necessary move, he acted like a petulant, pouting child that just got scolded. He should have been gone then.

  5. Cousins was "hitting" .224 in AAA (and even worse .188 against RHP) He batted .163 for the Marlins last year. .135 the year before. This is the guy you give up the DH for? We got lucky that O'Day couldn't throw strikes but then Sosh falls all over himself by giving that same pitcher a free out. Stupid.

  7. AL West put a nice beating on the AL East last night. A's over Yanks 2-0 M's over Jays 4-0 Rangers over blosox 7-0 Angels over O's 4-0 (Astros played the AL central)
  8. 17 games in a row without an extra base hit. Now slugging a Willits-like .292. A day off may be in order.
  9. One of the most disappointing plays of the season. Two players who didn't have their head in the game. I've seen space cadet Howie do things like this before. One time he simply forgot to tag the runner trying to stretch a single into a double as if he thought it was a force out. I'm sure that play will earn them a good chewing from Sosh. /s
  10. Another pitcher with a great arm that doesn't know how to pitch. What were Butchers qualifications to be hired by the Angels? One terrible year with Tampa? Isn't it interesting how TB allowed him to take a lateral job with the Angels without requiring compensation? If they viewed Butcher as a valuable commodity would that have happened? No. He got his job with the Angels because he was good buddies with the fat man. Nepotism. Why does an organization that aspires to be among the best in the game rely on a coach with no proven track record of success? Well, in his seventh year Butcher is very proven now. He sucks. He is incapable of getting the best out of the pitchers under his guidance. I don't want to hear the blatherings of some sycophant demanding "proof" that Butcher is responsible for year after year of poor pitching. Butcher is compared to his peers and I don't think even the most pathetic pollyana could make a case that Butcher is among the best in his field. You don't need proof. You just need to believe that one of his peers is better. A very low standard. I'm sure Butcher will "sleep like a baby" tonight because "he knows how good he is". In reality he probably sleeps like a baby because of who he knows instead of what he does.
  11. It's too bad our billionaire owner doesn't seem to understand the simple concept of counterparty risk. A guaranteed contract is a great example of counterparty risk. There's a reason why 10 year guaranteed contracts are never given to managers. No possible upside, plenty of downside.

  14. I admit to being completely fooled. I didn't understand who was really in charge. I didn't understand their means of manipulation. I didn't understand what was to be gained (and oil was the least of it). Bush and Cheney (and Obama now) are just puppets playing their part. Evil men for certain, but nowhere near the top. Recently, the CEO and Founder of Blackwater admitted that "...the company became a virtual extension of the CIA." Here is a video of some Blackwater mercenaries killing a great number of Iraqi men. (starts at about 0:42) Who are the "bad guys" again? The Iraqi men within their own country who took up weapons against an invader to defend themselves? Or a bunch of contract killers hired to go over to someone else's country and murder some people they don't know and never had a problem with? For a paycheck. Psychopaths have no empathy for others. Some are born that way, others can learn it but they feel no remorse for having caused pain and death. Even though Bush didn't plan the War he played a large part in it and the eventual deaths of hundreds of thousands. He doesn't sound very remorseful to me: If more people understood the nature of the power hierarchy that rules this world and the means of manipulation that they use to secure that power then these things wouldn't be possible.
  15. Jesus H . I know that. I thought that you were using "argumentum ad populum" to support your argument that "the right to bear arms is an archaic fossil from yesteryear". You clarified that you were just giving your estimation of the opinion of "most people" and that that wasn't your argument at all. My mistake. Happy? Anyone that would cede their rights to self and property protection or to making their own diet choices to a lower power like government is incorrect in my opinion. We are humans, not farm animals.

    Whenever any electronics with a power supply breaks down it's a good idea to check the capacitors before chucking it out. They are those little aluminum "cans" inside. They look like this: If any of them are puffy (convex) on top then you can replace it for $1 or so with a new cap and and a soldering iron. I fixed my tv and then my sister's plasma a year later. A few other things as well. They skimp on power supplies too often. Save a few pennies on an off brand cap and lose a $1K TV.

Good luck with that. Until that occurs, people have every right to defend their life and property from those who would take it. Bloomberg is such a clownish little authoritarian. I'm almost glad he exists because even the sleeping masses wake up a little with these antics.
  19. Rights cannot be "afforded". If they were then they would be called privileges. Try to learn the difference. Rights exist independent of any government or constitution. The Bill of Rights did not grant any Rights, it simply enumerated them. We aren't subjects that need a higher power to "give" us rights. We are sovereign. We give some privileges to the government but they have no rights. The Declaration of Independence speaks to these issues directly: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed," Due process of law is a natural right and has been enumerated and protected by governments much older than ours.
  20. "just to protect their rights?" A government that doesn't protect the rights of the citizen has no reason to exist. I am amazed that anyone would so gladly surrender their rights. It seems to me that so many people in the past fought, bled, suffered and died to secure and protect those rights. I can't say "thank you" to them. They're dead. But I can damn well remember their sacrifice and hold the gift that they earned for me in the highest regard. I won't cast aside those rights to make it more expedient for some f*cking bureaucrat to sign a death order. If someone is suspected of breaking the law then they can be arrested, tried, maybe convicted and executed. Due process of law in a free country, not execution at the whim of a King or a group of democratically elected tyrants. Here's the 5th Amendment to the US Constitution in case they never taught that one in whatever Rockefeller Indoctrination Center known as public schools you may have attended: No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

  23. Give 'Thrones a try. It's nothing like Willow. Only the first and last 5 minutes of season one have any fantastical elements. There is a dwarf but he's a conventional dwarf, not the magical kind. It was written based upon the War of The Roses time period that was a couple centuries after the Braveheart era. Some very powerful families that hold regions while commanding smaller houses (bannermen) within those lands. Several houses vie for the Throne. There isn't any Good Vs. Evil bullshit. The best players survive while the 'good guy' is seldom rewarded. Even the 'good' characters have their faults. (Catelyn Stark hates her husband's bastard for example). It's a huge world and a giant cast so the first few episodes it's normal to confuse one bearded dude with another. For me it has re-watch value on par with the Sopranos, Breaking Bad and Deadwood.
