Tonight it’s Blake Snell against Jordan Montgomery.

I was wrong.

So far 9-9 Injuries to Silseth and Stephenson Pitched 5+ innings 12 of 18 starts. Not throwing strikes but also right at league average in walks allowed. I wouldn’t call it good defense, but only 8 errors, AL average is 11. Running the bases well? Eh. 20 stolen bases (10 the last two games), which has us 2nd in the AL. Caught stealing is 6, which is second most in the AL with AL average being 3. Certainly not great but not bad either. Bottom line for me is if we stay healthy and Canning and Sandoval pitch better we are about a .500 team. It’s weird that in a week we will be done with Baltimore, Tampa and Boston for the year.

I guess I better phrase would have been it isn’t unheard of to include options like this. Either way it isn’t anything new or it isn’t in the contract because he was damaged goods. Common sense tells you that you aren’t giving $33 million to a guy who you think has an elbow injury.

As for the opinion that “the team must have known” or “he was damaged goods” since they added that clause in his contract. It’s fairly common to have these types of stipulations in contracts these days. First contract I remember having an option like that was Lackey’s Boston deal which they also exercised. Actually I think St Louis exercised it after he was traded? I could be mistaken.

I think it’s funny that there’s a narrative about him that if he struggles it’s because the Angels ruined him. There was an article that came out in the off season, the same one where he stood everyday and didn’t sit down at all except to eat. In the same article the new trainer for the Angels basically said he wouldn’t have advised that.
