  1. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/183906680/2016-draft-signing-and-bonus-tracker this is sorta that... Howie Kendrick does not belong in the same mention with Mathis. Kendrick was a first division starting 2B who was drafted in the 10th round.. Mathis was a second division back up catcher drafted in the first round. Kendrick ranks 70th overall among 2B for career WAR. Mathis has 1.4 career WAR. Yeah Howie was saddled with unrealistic expectations but he isn't a bust. Mathis is both a bust and a success story. He didn't come close to fulfilling what you'd expect out of a first round pick but as a catcher with any semblance of a career he's had a successful run. Honestly, the only people that think HK was a bust are Angels fans. Ward isn't a bust yet, it's just not looking all that great.
  2. Yawn.. You said he was more dominant in MLB than he was in Japan -- a laughable comment at best. But whatever.. Go ahead and mock a stat that actually tries to indicate a player's overall value (and to a degree dominance), in favor of batting average -- it does little to support either of your comments. Should I type "lol" now? Ichiro was a truly unique player and the best there ever was at hitting full swing IF singles. So dominant.
  3. Dominated MLB more than JPL? Does math play any part in this statement? JPPL - .353/.421/.522 MLB - .314/.357/.405 Career OPS+ of 108. CJ Cron has a career OPS+ of 104. Domination isn't what it used to be apparently. Ichiro was good at getting singles. A unique player and a dominant defensive player but -- a total of 2 top ten WAR finishes in 12 years takes some of the shine off his overall "dominance", particularly when you consider many believe WAR gives too much credence to defense. As far as Japan being AAA goes.. Bobby Rose, Alex Cabrera, Tuffy Rhodes, Tom Omalley, Alonzo Powell, are all pretty solid examples of how different the talent level is.
  4. Sure seems that way -- or maybe we are just all more excited than usual....

  6. Nice! I like it. Minor league stuff can fall off to page two so quick at times.. Thanks, Chuck!
  7. I miss that forum, wish we had a Minors sticky thread so we could just put any and ever minor league news in there...
  8. Well, he called the drafts crap when they happened.... he didn't really double down and repeat himself in the current article. He had a lot of praise for the Newcomb pick when it was made but he didnt think it was a good draft. Mostly he was pointing out that the direction seemed to have shifted back to where it was prior to Dipoto coming on board -- to guys with upside.
  9. TBW does good work -- Doc, not sure how much you've been looking at the numbers and histories, but even the college picks seem to have the term "athletic" associated with them. Across the board it seems the pitchers drafted all have a knack for throwing strikes and many of the hitters have extreme batting eyes... It also seems like they had absolutely no pause when it came to picking undersized players with at least one extreme skill set. All in all it seems there was a real effort made to find value.
  10. Not sure if you guys have access to ESPN, but Keith Law, a noted critic of most Angels drafts is actually throwing some praise at the Halos.... Also notes the dramatic shift back to pre-Dipoto drafting.
  11. Great news!.. Most excited I've been about a draft class in ages....
  12. Except that the Cubs didn't start there -- that was the last thing they did. What they did do was rebuild their farm system from the bottom up and traded away everything that was expensive. But let's not let reality get in the way of the narrative..
  13. I'm clearly neither relaxed or objective. I have so much to learn still.
  14. You can trade competitive balance picks these days...
  15. GM pitches a fit and quits. Offense puts up an OPS+ of 97, Pitching staff combines for an ERA+ of 95 - Angels win 85 games and miss postseason by one game. "It's Scioscia's fault" -- The totally "relaxed" and "objective" Angels fans on AW.com.
  16. Can't really do that anymore without getting hit with penalties...
  17. There will need to be some selling involved to get him to sign.
  18. Given his options it was a shrewd pick. As far as hard sign or not -- he can go the JC route like Chipola which is in state and considered one of the best JC baseball programs in the nation in hopes of reestablishing his profile then transfer to a 4 year school. Hopefully the Angels can convince him that signing now and being in a MLB system are his best path to staying healthy and future riches.. This may or may not turn out to be one of the better picks in the draft for the Angels -- he's definitely a guy with upside and the history of performing well. At worst it shows a willingness to take gambles we haven't seen in a long time.
  19. http://www.si.com/mlb/2016/03/28/book-excerpt-the-arm-jeff-passan-tommy-john-surgery Pretty good read...
  20. My guess would have been Nonie Williams -- but the early chatter is he wants to sign.
