  1. His 2nd half last year?  He only played in the 2nd half and he was terrible.  His big chance was in August last year and he struck out 16 times in 39 AB's with a .205 avg.  Escobar is not our problem right now.  Move Nava to 1st and DH Pujols.  We need offense.

  2. Let's leave Escobar where he is and not F with the only good thing happening offensively.  Let's put Nava at 1st base and keep Gentry in LF and send Cron and Choi down. Cron responds well to that.  Pujols will find his way at DH.  Cowart is not the answer..

  4. People declaring the Angels winners of this trade already (laughable, based off spring training alone) clearly don't value defense or didn't watch the calamity that was Escobar at third throughout the spring.

The only thing laughable is that you think people can't look at his major league stats since 2007, and include this year's ST, and make up their own minds.

  5. I still wouldnt trade Gott for Escobar.   Escobar = old and in decline, Gott = young and room for improvement.

An everyday 3rd baseman who was the second best offensive player on the Nationals last year and hasn't struck out in 19 games this Spring and is batting .456/.500/.561/1.061 for a guy who would give us 1 or 2 innings every 3 games?

The fan obsession with potential over reality in baseball is bizarre.

  6. He's out of options and I imagine not going to make the 25-man.

Gentry, Choi, Ortega, and maybe Marte even are likelier to make the Opening Day roster over him.

He's had a strong enough spring that I imagine some team out there would have interest in a switch-hitting, speedy, defensive 4th OF and would pluck him off waivers and either put him on the opening day 25 or do what we would be trying, to pass him through waivers to stash in the minors.

Also, I'm not totally sure, but he'd maybe be able to refuse an outright to SLC if he clears waivers, allowing him to become a free agent, but I'm not quite up to snuff on those rules.

Yeah I'm sure Gentry will and for some reason Choi seems a lock.  I guess he's one too many OF's with Ortega there too.

  7. Currently at 38. Maybe 37 when we lose Cunningham in a couple days. If Kendrick is ever needed there will probably be someone we'd be able to cut or transfer to the 60-day DL it we're full up.

Cunningham?  I would think Marte, Choi, Navarro or Ortega would be next.  Or do they have to release him if they send him down?

  8. Marte is seeing AA and AAAA pitching in the later innings. He should be raking but it doesn't mean he can hit MLB pitching.

What Choi has working for him is that he offers a lefty bat off the bench still, and is solid to good defensively at first, which we'll need for at least the first month of the year while Pujols gets back to speed and to serve as a defensive replacement for Cron. While his spring numbers haven't quite matched up, he still has solid history of good OBP and a bit of pop.

Working against Ortega and Marte is the fact both can be sent to SLC without risk of losing them. Choi hasn't done much but I still think his upside is worth keeping him around for a month or two to see if there's something there, but if his spot really begins to drag on the 25 I imagine they'd bump him and move up someone who fills more of a need.

All good stuff.  I have no problem thoroughly vetting him, but I think he's been a disappointment so far.

  9. Choi is striking at a 2:1 ratio to walks. He has a .640 OPS, so far the worst of any of the Angels fielders. He has shown almost nothing more than being a singles hitter. Now this could be because he has been refused switch hitting and only taking pitches from the left side but so far he may be a candidate for tossing back into the Rule 5 pool.

Raphael Ortega and Jefry Marte are having a much better Spring but they are also the B squad that come in when the regulars are done for the day, that includes pitchers.

Marte's SO's aren't too promising either but his .973 OPS shows he should earn the spot over Choi at this point.
