As far as the 2017 rotation goes, I'd sign one of the many scrubs out there to take over the 5 spot in the rotation. I'm thinking guys like Jorge De La Rosa, Kris Medlen, Jon Niese, even Weaver and CJ. Each has something of an upside (maybe not Weaver, but if we're considering the other guys we might as well consider him too) and should come cheap. 

I'd also trade Cron in a deal for a young starter and let Marte take over as the starting 1b/DH. 

If everyone heals up and stays healthy until next season that gives us

Richards, Shoemaker, Skaggs, Nolasco, FA, Meyer, Cron Trade which isn't great, but is workable if we're able to shore up the bullpen by signing a real lefty and a reliable 7th inning guy.

Well his peripherals have always shown he's been due for improvement. Maybe having Trout, Simmons, Calhoun, and Cowart behind him has helped him pitch to his potential

We don't have pitching prospects (outside of Nate Smith kind of) to give up and if we did I doubt we'd even consider trading them

Considering Nolasco consistently underperforms based on FIP and Santiago consistently over performs there's definitely potential for them to be a wash and the trade to come down to the development of Meyer. So while we lost out on the market, in my opinion we could possibly come out ahead in the actual trade

I think the main worry is that Meyers is hurt but Santiago is incredibly inconsistent and has always outperformed his peripherals which is probably a big reason why no other team wanted to trade for him. Remember we almost swung a deal last offseason for Brian Matusz a lefty reliever other teams dont seem to value him much and i just dont think he'll ever become a consistent starter

Nolasco's not an expensive starter though I'm not sure how much we will be paying him but it's certainly nowhere near his full contract. And yes it's great to receive "highly rated" prospects, but the shine wears off very quickly and sometimes unfairly. Look at Wil Meyers who's coming into his own a couple years after the shine wore off. Or Brandon Wood who never did. Or Shoemaker and Calhoun who never were prospects at all.

The only thing Santiago could ever consistently do was outperform his peripherals. Theres no reason why Meyer can't become a decent starter hes only a year removed from being a highly regarded prospect

Just looking at the statistics though I think if Meyer is healthy he can perform at Santiago's level they're actually similar pitchers in regards to control issues but good stuff. 

My opinion of this trade is we basically got a guy who is as much of a toss up as Santiago is going forward, but cheaper and controllable for longer. On top of that we got a 5 starter for next year so we won't have to discuss re-signing Weaver anymore

I don't understand the hate for Meyer he hasn't even been given a chance in the majors and was a top prospect not long ago. Santiago has shown only that he is inconsistent and couldn't be relied upon for anything. That being said I do think we couldve gotten a better return given how the market has played out

It depends on how much money the Twins are sending us but if Nolasco's pretty much free it's not so bad. Of course everything hinges on Meyer turning things around, but if he can and become a #3 starter we just got a 3 and 5 starter for next year. Also, Nolasco is a sinker ball pitcher if I remember correctly and should benefit from having Simmons behind him. He's also consistentyl pitched worse than his peripherals suggest so maybe there's some improvement there

Of course not I'm saying as a result of the entire deadline receive a relief arm or two as parts of the package in deals for Smith, Yunel, or Bedrosian. 

I personally hate the idea of trading multiple young prospects for a non-elite relief pitcher just because of how much the results fluctuate and how few innings they pitch so we might as well try to capitalize on the market now with Bedrosian. 

Either way hopefully we can net a reliever or two in the return who can help in the near future. This bullpen needs a complete makeover the only guys I want to be remain in it if Bedrosian is traded are Street, Guerra, Morin if he shows any flashes in September and maybe Chacin as he's done well as a long man and should be able to be re-signed for cheap. 

Bedrosian might be able to fetch a similar return to Chapman given his controllability and small contract which is a crazy thing to think about. Maybe the way to go is hold on to Street and hope he can figure things out and trade Bedrosian for the much better return

I'd say start remaking the bullpen now by getting an arm or two and trade Yunel and Santiago while their values are high. The offense is fine revolving around Calhoun, Trout, and Pujols and Cowart will add to a very good defense. Good Bullpen, ok starters, great defense, and a solid offense would probably be enough to compete next year.

Gallo seems like Chris Davis pt.II. Remember Davis didn't put it together until he left Texas

Maybe we could see a mix of buying and selling. The bullpen very clearly needs to be rebuilt and we might as well start by adding a decent controllable righty who can help next year too and maybe a rental lefty who can actually get lefties out so we can get rid of Alvarez. We saw the lift that adding Grilli had for our bullpen and adding a couple decent arms would improve it drastically. I think Santiago's value is at a good enough level where we can get a solid return for him. Let's be honest his last couple games have been great, but we know how incredibly inconsistent he is and I don't see him turning any corners. I've really liked what I've seen out of Bandy and Perez is capable as a backup so maybe Soto could be traded as well but I don't see us netting anything significant for him. 

In short add a rental lefty (Boone Logan, Mark Rzepcynski), controllable righty (Ryan Pressly, Michael Tonkin (Twins), Kevin Quackenbush (Padres)) none of whom should cost very much prospect-wise. 

And trade Santiago for a solid haul as well as potentially lesser chips like Soto, Nava, and Alvarez. 

Now can we just call up Ortega and give Nava Choi's spot on the bench as pinch hitter and day off for Cron against righties? Nava seems much better suited for a role like that and it would get Ortega regular ab's to prove himself.

For guys who get paid millions of dollars and are the best hitters in the entire world to simply wait back on a pitch and hit it the other way to beat the shift? I really don't understand it. I mean it makes sense for power hitters because they're trying to make as big of an impact as they can on the game but for complementary players like Giavotella i really don't understand it
