  1. So what the heck is this playing under protest crap.  If the Rangers win the game doesnt count?  The ALCS will be delayed for court appeals?

Essentially if the call is reversed, the play would be resumed from the point it came at - so the game would restart with the game tied 2-2, and the Jays batting in the bottom of the 7th (since Choo would be the third out of the 7th).

You'd basically have to have the ruling made _today_, you'd think.    But that said...

    4.19

    PROTESTING GAMES.

Each league shall adopt rules governing procedure for protesting a game, when a manager claims that an umpires decision is in violation of these rules. No protest shall ever be permitted on judgment decisions by the umpire. In all protested games, the decision of the League President shall be final.

Even if it is held that the protested decision violated the rules, no replay of the game will be ordered unless in the opinion of the League President the violation adversely affected the protesting teams chances of winning the game.

Rule 4.19 Comment: Whenever a manager protests a game because of alleged misapplication of the rules the protest will not be recognized unless the umpires are notified at the time the play under protest occurs and before the next pitch, play or attempted play. A protest arising on a game-ending play may be filed until 12 noon the following day with the league office.

Basically the protest is DOA because it's a judgment call by the ump as to whether or not interference occurred anyway.

  2. Now under video review... review of what exactly, I wonder.  But whichever team this eventually goes against _has_ to play the remainder of the game under protest.  (Assuming the Jays fans don't trigger a forfeit at this point)

I _think_ however that the ball is live while the catcher has possession and is returning it to the pitcher.  Hitting the bat, that's the catcher's fault there, unless the batter is obviously trying to obstruct.  Which means the call should go in Texas' favor.
