Los Angeles Angels Prospect Edgar Quero talks with AngelsWin.com

Interview conducted by Taylor Blake Ward, AngelsWin.com The Angels switch-hitting catching prospect from Cuba had a breakout season in Low-A hitting .312/.435/.530 with 17 home runs and 73 walks in 111 games. His advanced approach at the plate is what the Angels are most excited about, as he rarely swings at pitches out of the zone and barrels up mistake pitches. There's not much to dislike in Quero's game at the plate as he showed a good contact rate, power and an excellent eye which ascen

Los Angeles Angels Prospect Prospect Hotlist (7/12-7/25)

By Tres Hefter, AngelsWin.com Columnist Some new names, some familiar names, an interesting couple of weeks saw new Angel farmhands continuing to break out and Angel pitchers position themselves for potential MLB call-ups… -- Position Players-- 1) Edwin Yon – RF, Inland Empire, A: The towering (6’5”? 6’8”?) outfielder hailing from La Romana in the Dominican Republic easily had the hottest two weeks of any Angels farmhand, highlighted by a 2 HR, 9 RBI performance on July 14th.

Bob Steve: A Lesson in Swinging Strikes

Friday night, the Angels revealed their biggest signing yet - right-handed relief pitcher Robert Stephenson.  Stephenson's career has been an interesting one to look at, but with a 2023 that was nothing short of monumental and several other outstanding years, it's fair to say his impact should be felt in the Angels bullpen come opening day. He first came onto the scene in 2016 as a Starting pitcher, starting 22 rather unimpressive games for the Reds from 2016-2018. Although his numbers from

Angels Michael Stefanic's growing bat ready to contribute significantly in 2024

- by Ryan Falla The Angels lack of major splashes in this free agent market has some fans concerned over the stability of the roster through the 2024 season after losing one of the biggest names in baseball. However, the Angels biggest needs have always been more than having or not having one single superstar to carry the roster. A sputtering internal talent pipeline to the Major Leagues has more often than not been the crux of the Angels efforts towards contention season after season, yet

Angels Cam Minacci carving All-Star path to the Majors

By Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Staff Reporter Despite the Angels negative developmental reputations coming into 2024 recent months have shown an elite class of talent waiting in the wings for the organization. Whereas this time last year Angel prospects came as a group of unknowns this past Spring Training has revealed a favorable future on the Angels horizons. Standing tall amongst a brevy of extreme upside future MLB talent is former Wake Forest superstar closer Cam Minacci, who comes as a

2024 Angels Best and Worst-case Scenarios: Hitters Edition

By Jonathan Northrop, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer Perhaps what defines the 2024 Angels, to me at least, is the wide range of variance between best and worst-case scenarios, that is such scenarios that exist within the realm of possibility. Meaning, nearly every player--with only a couple exceptions (e.g. Brandon Drury) has a huge range of reasonably possible outcomes. In what follows, I will look at the hitters and suggest what I see as their ceilings and floors, and where I think they

Angels sign starting pitcher Jose Quintana from the Cubs

Jose Quintana of Arjona, Colombia, has signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels worth $8 million from the Chicago Cubs according to the Associated Press. The Angels will become Quintana’s third team he has played for in his Major League Baseball career. In addition to the Cubs, Quintana has pitched for the Chicago White Sox. Quintana did not have a decision in four games in 2020. During his 10 innings pitched, he gave up 10 hits, five earned runs, three walks, and had 12 strikeout

The Future of the Angels Outfield

By Jonathan Northrop, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer The emergence of Taylor Ward as an elite hitter--as well as the slow development of Adell--has put a bit of a crimp in the Angels outfield outlook. Before the year, it was reasonable to assume that the Angels would platoon Ward, Marsh, and Adell in the corner spots, and let them hack it out for playing time all year long. Even last year, I presented various configurations on how the Angels could platoon Marsh and Adell with Upton, assuming W

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: 12 Games In

12 games have come and gone, and, for lack of a better word, the results have left lots of room for conversation. The Angels are 6-6 - frankly, a result better than I expected, since I found our first month or so very difficult, schedule wise.  Despite this, I am not pleased with the result, because based on the events of said 12 games, we could easily be 8-4 or even 9-3.  That being said, we're still 2nd in the division and only a game back of the Rangers. With 150 games ahead, there's bee

2024 Angels Best-and Worst-case Scenarios 2: Starting Pitchers

By Jonathan Northrop, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer As with the hitters, the Angels pitching staff has a good amount of variability, although perhaps a bit less, with almost every starter having a floor of a #4-5 and either #3 or, in one or two cases, #2 upside. I'll look at the bullpen in a third instalment. A note on "worst-case scenarios:" For pitchers, even durable ones, there's always the lingering phantom of a blowout and/or Tommy John surgery. Rather than repeat myself for every p

Power of Shohei Ohtani shines for the Angels in primetime

The talk from Major League Baseball on the opening weekend of the 2021 regular season was centered around the greatness of their hitting and pitching superstar, Shohei Ohtani of Oshu, Japan. On Sunday night in the Angels’ 7-4 win over the Chicago White Sox, Ohtani became the first ever American League starting pitcher since the designated hitter rule was instituted in 1973, to hit a home run in a game. Ohtani’s one-out first-inning blast has been the talk of Major League Baseball. According

Los Angeles Angels Prospect Hotlist 6/28-7/1 (Position Players Only)

By Tres Hefter, AngelsWin.com Columnist In honor of the draft, the commencement of the Arizona League, and reaching the halfway point of the MLB season, we’re doubling up today – featuring ten hitters and ten pitchers who have performed well over the last two weeks. This is also in part to the hot hitting on the farm, as eight Angels farmhands posted an OPS over 1.000, with four prospects from the Arizona team opening their seasons with big production at the plate.    --Posit

2021 Angelswin.com Trade Deadline Series: Likely Targets to Sell

By Robert Cunningham, Angelswin.com Senior Writer Now that we have identified probable purchases, it is time to flip the script and discuss what happens if the Angels become sellers, rather than buyers. For the purposes of this article we will only discuss those assets that actually have some level of reasonable trade value as it will not be the best use of time trying to find someone with minimal or even zero value, like Tony Watson or Kurt Suzuki, a hypothetical home on another team.

Rays trade relief pitcher Hunter Strickland to the Angels

On the same day the Los Angeles Angels saw former first baseman Albert Pujols switch Los Angeles teams and sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, they acquired a reliever from the Tampa Bay Rays. According to Rhett Bollinger of mlb.com on Saturday, the Angels acquired Hunter Strickland of Thomaston, GA from the Rays for a player to be named or cash considerations. The Angels become Strickland’s sixth Major League Baseball team. In addition to the Rays, he has pitched for the San Francisco Giant

AngelsWin.com Interview with Angels Prospect Pitcher Jack Kochanowicz

Interview Conducted by David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer It’s easy to see why the Angels drafted Jack Kochanowicz in the 3rd round of the 2019 draft (92nd overall). He’s big (6’6”) and still filling out, so there was and is a lot to project with him. As a result, the Angels went overslot for him to buy him out of his commitment to the University of Virginia. There is a lot to like with Kochanowicz. His velocity has ticked up since being drafted, and now sits mid-90s and touche

Prospect Hotlist: Los Angeles Angels Hottest Prospects (6/14/21)

Much like the Angels’ major league offense awakening as May turned into June, the same can be said for many of the Angels’ farmhands. The last two weeks saw a number of Angels’ position players, new and old, put up big numbers, and several Angels’ pitchers found themselves moving up to new teams following strong spring starts.  --Position Players-- 1) Matt Thaiss – C/DH/1B, Salt Lake City, AAA: So far, no Angels’ minor league position has done more to definitively place themselves

The Lineup: Offseason plans and 2023 Outlook

By Jonathan Northrop, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer 2022: A Tale of Limp Bats Strangely enough, the lineup ended up being the biggest problem area for the Angels this year, as they're currently 24th in the majors in wRC+ (91) and 25th in runs scored (493). Compare this to them being 12th in ERA (3.83) and 11th in pitcher WAR (13.2). It's a bit harder to quantify their defense, but they're 17th in Def Runs with -3.1, so basically close to average. So Perry Minasian goes into the offs

I'm Starting to Believe - A Stroll through Angels History and a Look at the 2022 Club

By Jonathan Northrop (@Angelsjunky), AngelsWin.com Senior Writer Introduction Before the season began, I predicted that the Angels would go 91-71, with a good chance of earning a wildcard berth. At the time, I doubted my own prediction - as @Dochalo half-jokingly remarked, he and I did the same thing every year: Wrote a long, stat-heavy post that showed how the Angels could be better than expected. And they never were. But this year seems different - and more so, I'm starting to b

2021 Angelswin.com Trade Deadline Series: Probable Assets to Acquire

By Robert Cunningham, Angelswin.com Senior Writer Now that we have spent some time getting the lay of the land, it is time to do a bit more speculative analysis, based on the Angels' needs, if they become buyers. Knowing the Halos most probable four areas of need and the list we created of likely sellers, we can use FanGraphs sortable statistics, looking at possible catchers, starters, right fielders, and relievers that might be targets of interest for the Angels and are also likely to

Los Angeles Angels Day I & II MLB Draft Recap

By @Inside Pitch, AngelsWin.com Contributor Pitcherpalooza!!!   Two days and 10 rounds into the 2021 MLB draft and we can honestly say it's been a bit of a fun if somewhat "steady" ride...   Day one started off with a bang when the consensus "draft day" first overall pick, SS Marcelo Mayer was passed over for Louisville C, Henry Davis.  So, was it really a surprise when the Angels' pick came up at number 9 and the consensus "pre-season" first overall pick was still on the
