Five Reasons The Angels Can Still Win Without Trout

By Tres Hefter, AngelsWin.com Columnist 1. There's plenty of offense still.  Previously, any time the Angels lost Trout for an extended period of time, it hurt. He was practically the sole above average contributor on a team which also more often than not had several offensive holes. In 2017, Trout missed 48 games and Andrelton Simmons was the next best hitter on the team, with a .752 OPS/102 OPS+. The Angels were 15th out of 15 AL teams in OPS with .712...including Trout.

Does the Angels link to Tim Anderson put Drury on the trade market?

By Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Contributor The Angels are currently hard up for quality talent in many spots across the roster heading into 2024, yet one place that needs little reinforcement is their current infield situation. With a talent stream featuring the likes of Nolan Schanuel, Brandon Drury, Zach Neto, Anthony Rendon, and Luis Rengifo there is clearly little room for addition in this tightly packed, talented infield. Yet recent offseason stove burnings have the Angels smouldering wi

Dissecting Mike Trout and why you should not worry

First off let's just get right to the point. Mike Trout while he's older and will never be the player he was in his younger 20's and prime years, he is not someone that is in steep decline as some have suggest on social media and our community forum, he's just off at this time. Let's take a closer look.  As you can see below, Trout has been missing, as his exit velocities have been down the last three weeks, but the underlying data is still really strong. People have been say

Cole Fontenelle (Angels 2023 Seventh Round Draft Pick) Exclusive Interview with AngelsWin.com

By Taylor Blake Ward, AngelsWin.com Columnist Fontenelle took a roundabout way to Fort Worth after stops at Washington and McClennan CC before turning into a big-moment bat for the Horned Frogs in 2023. A switch-hitter, Fontenelle stays simple is his load with some drift in his hands. He has strength in his hands to manipulate the barrel and cover the entire zone from the left side where the physical strength in his six-foot-three, 205-pound frame lets him produce some bat speed and near ab

Bob Steve: A Lesson in Swinging Strikes

Friday night, the Angels revealed their biggest signing yet - right-handed relief pitcher Robert Stephenson.  Stephenson's career has been an interesting one to look at, but with a 2023 that was nothing short of monumental and several other outstanding years, it's fair to say his impact should be felt in the Angels bullpen come opening day. He first came onto the scene in 2016 as a Starting pitcher, starting 22 rather unimpressive games for the Reds from 2016-2018. Although his numbers from

Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Unpacking the Jared Walsh conundrum

By Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Contributor Jared Walsh is no stranger to swinging himself out of a slow start. His debut season back in 2019 saw him log an OPS of .605 through 79 Major League AB’s before rocketing into All-Star form. This trend follows Walsh all the way back to the Minors as well. His breakout 2018 season saw Walsh hit .172 over the last few weeks of April into early May before blowing up with a Cal League leading 14 HRs to end the second month of the season. Though Walsh may

Ballin' on a Budget: Under the Radar Free Agents to Consider

As the Hot Stove slowly churns along, a lot of the attention is on the big names - Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery and Cody Bellinger, among others.  While these kinds of moves are where some teams make or break their seasons, there's a lot of players that go under the radar that eventually turn into major contributors.  A few that come to mind are Robbie Ray's 1 year, $8 Million deal in 2021 where he won the AL Cy Young award, or Dexter Fowler helping the Cubs win the 2016 World Series on an ide

AngelsWin.com Interview with IE66ers Outfielder Edwin Yon

By David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer On December 12th, 2019, the Angels made what appeared to be a quiet move when they selected outfielder Edwin Yon with their 2nd round pick of the Triple-A portion of the Rule V Draft. Originally signed by the Cincinnati Reds on November 5, 2014 as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic, Yon, a right handed hitting OFer had spent several seasons in Rookie ball in the Reds system before showing some improvement during the 2019.

AngelsWin.com Interview with Angels Prospect Pitcher Jack Kochanowicz

Interview Conducted by David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer It’s easy to see why the Angels drafted Jack Kochanowicz in the 3rd round of the 2019 draft (92nd overall). He’s big (6’6”) and still filling out, so there was and is a lot to project with him. As a result, the Angels went overslot for him to buy him out of his commitment to the University of Virginia. There is a lot to like with Kochanowicz. His velocity has ticked up since being drafted, and now sits mid-90s and touche

AngelsWin.com Interview with Angels Minor League Pitcher Jack Dashwood

Interview Conducted by David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer In 2019, UC Santa Barbara tied a school record with 10 players taken in a single draft. The Angels were the first team to select one of the Gauchos when they picked the Saturday Night starter, left-handed pitcher Jack Dashwood in the 12th round (361st overall). Between the lost year to Covid, and some injuries, 2021 has been the first year where we have been able to see Dashwood on the mound. And, from what we saw, we we

AngelsWin.com Archives: Larry Bowa Interview by Brian Waller

Interview Conducted by Brian Waller, AngelsWin.com Feature Writer Intensity is something you can’t teach. It’s not a pitch you can practice in the bullpen; it’s not a flaw in your swing you can fix in the batting cages. It’s an intangible that doesn’t show in stat lines on the back of baseball cards. It’s a personality trait that is found in winners and leaders throughout baseball’s long history. Few men are more intense when it comes to the game of baseball then Larry Bowa. Bowa played

Angels Zach Joyce talks draft, expectations coming into organization out of Tennessee

The Angels 2023 draft saw a number of fascinating selections from GM Perry Minasian as the team targeted a number of near ready, college level talents with turnaround potentials within the next two seasons. From the highly developed batter’s eye of Nolan Schanuel (with a swing to see his discipline through) alongside the big power potential of Alberto Rios, there is no shortage of high potential names beginning their journey in the system. One name that stands above the rest of this draft class

Angels prospect Zach Joyce defined by overcoming challenges

by Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Staff Reporter There are few qualities better suited for the Major League grind than the ability to overcome adversity on a daily basis. We see this time and time again as Major Leaguers regularly fall into slumps and prospects slip into doubt as the game stays unpromised to those who do not work for it. 80 grade tools suddenly become meaningless if the athlete possessing such talent does not have the fortitude to apply himself against the pressures presented by

Angels prospect Walbert Ureña on pace for Major League stardom

By Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Columnist  The Angels have given fans very little to look forward to at the big league level, yet if you look deeper into the organization you will find the beginnings of some truly special stuff within this organization. One of the many bright spots in the Angels near future is pitcher Walbert Ureña, the 19 year flamethrower recently entering the organization as part of the 2020-2021 international free agent class. Despite being just 19 years of age Ureña has a

Angels prospect Barrett Kent blazes path towards All-Star success

Barrett Kent is a throwback to the old days of Angels pitching development; back when big bodied, durable stalwarts headed this rotation into yearly playoff contention. His makeup and build call back to the likes of Jered Weaver, John Lackey, and Garrett Richards who all solidified themselves as top arms across the league out of the Angels system. The hard-throwing 18 year old Kent comes into the organization out of Texas while very much sporting a Texas sized fastball. His go to offering alread
