I think Stoneman's philosophy was to be competitive each year and make sure you stay competitive for the next 5 years. How many times does the team with the best record win the World Series? It's the team that gets hot at the right time. Also, I think Arte needs to understand that we are now in the post-steroids, post-HGH era. Guys are not going to have their best seasons in their late 30's while their juicing to get that last huge retirement contract. Pre-steroid era, the best five year span for a Major League player statistically was always 28-32. I think things are going back to that, so signing guys at the tail end of that age range, or past it, to long-term deals is franchise suicide.

I agree with you.  However, if you posted this at the time of the Pujols signing how many fans would have agreed that the signing was franchise suicide, and would be willing to ask that Arte not do it.  Probably darn few.

I have drawn mental comparisons to the 2002 club, and I don't like what I see. The 2013 club lays waste to 2002 in terms of sheer star power and payroll, but the '02 club had a chemistry and a go-get-'em attitude that this club simply can't touch. On paper the '13 club should club the '02 team into oblivion, but just the opposite would happen. In 2002 I never believed that we were out of any game until the third out was recorded in the ninth. With this club, if I turn on the TV and we're down three runs, I turn it back off and find something else to occupy my time.

You can't compare the salary level of the 2002 team to the 2013 team, everything is way more expensive now, including baseball salaries.  I believe this team would develop chemistry if it started to produce consistent wins.  Until then there is nothing to build on.  Effective, consistent play builds chemistry and confidence.

Yes, this is an extremely disappointing season so far.  But many of you are looking at the salary levels on this team, and then projecting performance based on those levels.  You have to realize that players like Hamilton, Pujols, Weaver and Wilson are being paid for what they did in the past.  Organizations and fans project and hope that that level of performance will continue with their current team.  Many times it does not.That's a big issue with free agency and salary levels, and until it changes in baseball to something closer to pay for performance, veteran players will continue to miss the expectation levels placed on them.  Young players have the reverse situation, they have no history to demand high salaries, the structure with team control players keeps them underpaid for some time until they earn bargaining and free agency rights.  It is easier for fans to feel they are performing well relative to their salary levels.

Aybar and Bourjos would pull their hamstrings on the way to the fight.

I'm sure yelling at someone who makes $25M per year is going to have an impact, LOL.  Sitting that kind of player will not get the response you want.  I would keep playing him, let him suffer with the rest of his team mates.  Let the fans, and his fellow players take it out on him.  The more he under performs the more foolish he looks.
