  1. I'll give him one kudos, he did improve his OBP this year. When he shows patients at the plate, he turns that into production. Maybe he's learned. Although, the other side of that looks dismal. A big gamble imo. Especially if he costs what some project he will.

And he still has that ass-hat Boras as an agent. I just don't see it.

  2. Trade CJ Wilson and Matt Shoemaker and a player to be named later to the Colorado Rockies for Carlos Gonzalez. Plus we will eat $10 Million of Wilson's contract.

With Troepano and Santiago ready if any of them go down. Also, after the 2016 season, Weaver's $20 will be coming off the books and it will be time to bring up Newcomb.

    Let the comments begin!

Nice thought, but you already traded Newcomb. The Rockies might show some interest in Wilson, but there is no way they take on Shoemaker.

Not to mention we now have a 31 year old ex Rockies hitter with only two more years on his contract, which will probably end up being a good thing. Have you seen his home and away splits?

    Good post though

  3. The Cubs are young and have ran into a team firing on all cylinders. The Mets have an awesome starting rotation and since the trade deadline have an offense capable of scoring runs. Add both those factors to them currently being on a hot streak and you have a world series bound team. It would be beyond remarkable if the cubbies were to come back and win this series. Yeah I know, tell you all something you don't already know.

  4. You're going to pay Cespedes/Heyward upward to $150M for 6-8 years. If you can get Puig ... you're only committed for three years under $20M. If you can get the Dodgers to pay half of Wilsons salary ... then you save $10M. Leaves a lot of money to go after a #1 starter and whatever else you need to improve the bullpen or offense.

Personally, I would consider trading Newcombe if it came down to getting Puig ... Heaney?

Speaking strictly from a player on the field prospective,  I like the Wilson for Puig part, especially if we could shed a good bit of Wilson's contract. However, the million's of dollar question no one here could probably answer is, how messed up in the head is this guy and what will be his impact on this team going forward? A couple extra OPS+ points might not be worth the experiment. Who knows though?

I really hope we don't continue trading off our youth.

  5. People have always judged Howie not on what he was, but what they wanted him to be. If not for Bobby Grich he would be the best 2B in franchise history and yet the perception for many is that he was this massive failure.

Both true and sad. If I'm not mistaken, Howie and Adrian are largely the reason the Dodgers are even in the playoffs.
  6. Wilson has way more value than he's being given credit for. He probably get 2/16-20 on the open market assuming his health checks out.

I wouldn't be too quick to trade him right now anyway. He's gotta prove he's healthy first and we need to see how the rotation shakes out before that. If you are only going to eat 4mil, you might as well keep him. If you move Santiago and Shoe, it would be nice to have the depth with a guy that's been there and knows how to do it.

He could be a decent chip at the deadline if we aren't in it.

Wilson sucks with flashes of brilliance, and if we're out of it by the trading deadline, I suspect Wilson will have had his fair share to do with it.
  7. I mostly agree to stay away from the top tier pitchers this year. Although, I would still make a run at Cueto. Nothing says Arte has to sell the farm to get him, but I would make a legit run at him. Calling him pedestrian in the AL after two months of play is a bit short sighted. Cueto and another solid # 3 type SP will do us good. And like someone else here has said, it will give us the opportunity to move some of our other talent for offensive help.

  8. Two pages and nobody picked this up and responded?

Here is the latest, Utley's agent has filed an appeal (figures, he gets a cut of playoff money) and if MLB does not respond to the appeal and make a response Utley is eligible to play.

If MLB wants to be idiots and look stupider than the NFL they don't immediately listen to the appeal and deny it under the best interest of the sport regardless of the appeal merit.

This is the Buster Posey argument, you can't leave it to players to police themselves when it comes to un sportsman like conduct. There must be guidelines where there is a reasonable protection for all players. The current rules are not specific enough but that still can be applied to this situation with the caveat that the commissioner is of the opinion that the recent spiking of Giavotella and other incidents point to a rise of on field violence that is not acceptable and Utley will be the precedence for the drafting of the new rule change.

Utley should not see the playing field. He really shouldn't be allowed to suit up. He should be suspended.

I think it’s quite obvious the commissioner’s office is making an attempt to keep this thing from spinning out of control, albeit not a great one. I believe both sides of this discussion have valid points, and there are a lot of them. I’m not defending Torre, but I don’t see how he had any other choice. Well, maybe I’m defending him a bit. Although, if he was going to suspend, why not suspend for the entire series?

Another part of this brouhaha I haven’t yet read in this thread is about the usual way one team pays back the other for these types of plays.  When a middle infielder is taken out in a particularly rough manner, the other team’s normal response is to take out the other teams MI’s in an equal or greater way.

I think the majority of Mets players might be feeling a bit disrespected, especially after hearing this fool only received a two game suspension. Imho, by suspending Utley two games (assuming the suspension sticks), Torre managed to put a highlighted bull’s eye on Seager and Kendrick’s back. Not that they didn’t already have one, but it will be even that much better lit now.

I sincerely hope this doesn’t spin out of control and one of Seager or Kendrick get hurt badly.
