  1. This is going to be tough, as I'm doing this on my phone while on vacation. I'll try to get notes out as they go.
  2. Yeah, funny thing about getting lots of money when you're young and making good decisions with it. Compound interest works wonders in your favor. Let's say you put $10k of that bonus in tax free or tax deferred retirement plans. And, let's say, over the rest of your life, you contribute $500/month into your IRAs. And you just put it in a mutual fund that returns 7.5% on average, the historical stock market return. At age 65, that comes to 2,614,265.12 at age 65. Now, let's assume after taxes, etc., and maybe buying yourself a reasonable car, you have $250k leftover (remember, not all states are as taxing as CA). And, let's assume you don't add a dime to that sum and just leave it there until age 30. That turns into $595,444.90 at age 30. Age 30 is a good number because hat gives you time to play baseball and chase your dreams until age 25, call it quits, go to college, and earn a degree. Let's say you choose law enforcement. You graduate, go through the academy, and become a patrol officer at age 30. Presently, the median salary for a patrol officer is $53,208. Let's assume that salary grows at a rate of about 2%. That comes to $67,480.61 for a starting salary at age 30. Now let's assume after getting your job, you get married and want to buy a house. Presently, the median price of a home in the USA is $188,900. Let's assume a 4% growth rate in that price. By age 30, that cost will be $302,434.99. Of course, from your signing bonus, you have nearly TWICE that much to pay cash for your house, leaving you with no mortgage. And of course you have no college debt. And, since you have a college degree, you are more likely to get promoted. The two biggest bills that most college graduates have to pay, you never will pay (mortgage and education costs). You can live on 100% of your income knowing full well that you never have to contribute anything more than $500/month to your retirement, and at age 65 you will have over $2.5 million in addition to your entire pension as a police officer. Yeah, I guess some people might not call that set for life, but for most sane people, that is far better off than they would ever be without that money at a young age. That would put your net worth at age 65 well into the top 10% of the US, which of course, is pretty much set for life, especially considering how your life would turn out if you had to pay for everything on your own trying to achieve the same scenario.
  3. I wouldn't mind if the Angels let me do more of the coverage since I didn't misreport this story.
  4. Um, I reported to you pretty much EXACTLY what was said and released. There was nothing in there for BSPN to use to suggest this. It was specifically asked and the response was he will be reevaluated in 3 weeks. If they want to speculate, then they need to make it clear that it is their conjecture, not what was stated or reported. If there was something specifically calling out TJ surgery, I would have put it in my notes to you all.
  5. Good analysis and writeup Doc. And, I agree that is a very efficient way to do it, much better than Dipoto's high ceiling, low floor approach. There's always a good chance that when you offer real money to high upside prospects drafted later that they will take it, especially now that you can include a college scholarship. If you have $450k and a college scholarship paid for at age 18, you are very set for life. I'd tell my sons to take the money and run. What's the worst that can happen, you enter college a little older, a little wiser, and knowing that you gave pro-ball your best shot? Big deal. No college debt, the downpayment for a house (or the full price of a house outright) by the time you graduate. Sign me up please.
  6. I'd say if there is a fairly common sentiment, it's a slow burn. With so much highly ranked pitching still available at our first pick, and, with Adams playing OF like so many of our top prospects, there was a strong desire by many to draft someone like Singer instead of Adams. Not that we necessarily thought the Angels would necessarily draft Singer, but that we wanted them to switch gears based on who was falling to us. As we have learned more about Adams, and, it has become. Clear that he will sign to play (that wasn't well known at the time by fans), people are more open to it and liking it more. I think most really like the Jackson pick in the 2nd round, along with some of the later pitchers. But, I don't think you can say there is as. Much joy as there was with last year's draft with Adell and Canning.
  7. I think there is a myriad of opinions on this year's draft, as opposed to last year's draft (which was universally loved). The truth is, the only way to know how good of a draft a team had is to wait 5-6 years and look back.
  8. Are you telling me Scioscia, the man of 1,000 lineups a year, wouldn't just drool over this scenario?
  9. Moustakis at 3B 5-6 times a week. Simmons at SS probably 13 out of 14 games Kinsler at 2B 3-5 games. Cozart at 3B 1-2 times a week, 2B 2-3 times a week, SS 1 game out of 14. Valbuena and JMF at 1B. Pujols DH unless Trout needs a day off.
  10. I think we split time based on matchups and things.
  11. I said this in an earlier thread, but I'd pick up the phone with KC and try to get Moustakis at this point. Put him at 3B, Cozart at SS, and Valbuena and JMF to handle 1B. Pujols to the DH. My offer is Ward and Hermosillo.
  12. Here's the press release. Good afternoon, Today the Angels have made the following roster moves: · RHP/DH Shohei Ohtani – Placed on 10-day Disabled List with right elbow UCL sprain (retro to 6/7) · UTL Kaleb Cowart – Placed on 10-day Disabled List with left ankle sprain (retro to 6/7) · INF Jose Fernandez – Selected to Major League Roster · INF Nolan Fontana – Recalled from Salt Lake
  13. Just to let everyone know, a lot of these questions/ideas/concerns were asked and answered in the Eppler media call. I posted notes in a different thread. Check there.
  14. Check my thread, but Eppler said they will take the 6-man or 5-man rotation day by day.
  15. Okay, these are not exact quotes, as I couldn't record the call. These are paraphrasing. Don't hold me to exact wordings. It was really difficult to get it all, as it was translated into English and Japanese. Eppler said it was a grade 2. He was asked because there is a range of grade 2 strains. He said I'd a grade 2 strain. "That's all I can say." Ohtani came out of the game with the blister. As the blister was getting drained, and the game adrenaline was wearing off, he said his elbow was feeling stiff. The Angels decided to get an image right away. Asked about his level of concern, Eppler said any time that any player is unable to perform, I am concerned. This is a tough thing for me, a tough thing for the club. Asked about Ohtani having a PRP injection within the last year, what do the doctors say about this meaning Ohtani needs TJ surgery. The doctors did not bring up any impact of the previous PRP injectio and did not discuss it in terms of needing TJ surgery. Asked about how the types of pitches affects the arm/elbow and how 1 in 4 pitches that Ohtani throws is a split finger pitch, Eppler said that there is a lot of variability in that thought process. Ohtani has not been found to be significantly differently in that, but that was mostly due to a lack of sample size. Angels will take that in stride with Ohtani as he returns. There is a lot of discussion out there on this issue. Eppler was asked when Ohtani first felt the discomfort before or after going to Minnesota. Eppler said Ohtani didn't go to Minnesota and that he first reported it after the game on Wednesday. Will the Angels go to a 5-man rotation now? Eppler said they will take it day by day. Will Ohtani have to undergo TJ surgery? Eppler said the Angels are hopeful that he can avoid that and that he can be treated with the biologic prescribed. Will the PRP work? You've seen what he [Ohtani] has done on the mound here after a PRP injection. Could Shohei continue to hit with this injury? If he was only a DH for all of his life, possibly. But that's not him or how the Angels utilize him. Any small tweak in a swing could slightly increase the risk to him, so the Angels aren't going that way. Will Ohtani throw during the next 3 weeks prior to be reevaluated? He will not be throwing in the next 3 weeks. Has Eppler spoken with Ohtani since the injury? He has spoken with Ippei (sorry if I mispelled that) with Ohtani in the room. How is Eppler/the Angels responding to this news? Every player is unique. He tries to stay as neutral as possible and realize every player is unique (as far as recovery from injury). How is Ohtani's demeanor after the injury? Ohtani is an elite level player and elite level players want to compete. When elite level players get pulled out of the competition, they go through a range of emotions. Did Ohtani say that he felt stiff any time prior to Wednesday? Wednesday was when the Angels first learned of it. Again, not exact quotes, but, trying to get everyone some information out there.
  16. How they found it: After Ohtani came out of the game and was getting the blister drained, the game adrenaline was wearing off. Ohtani said his elbow was stiffening up. They sent him for an MRI based on that. He did not go to Minnesota.
  17. It's a grade 2 strain. All Eppler can say. even though there is a range.
  18. I will try to get notes out as fast as possible from this for everyone.
  19. Did we get any reviews/info on his start? Been busy lately and haven't had as much time to check. What was his velo? How was the command?
  20. I'd like to get him today (not wait for the deadline where I might need to compete), and, there are still mixed reviews on Ward at 3B (although I am very pleased with how well he's turned the corner). I think that offer gets a good conversation going.
  21. Thanks. Ironically, I think this injury actually makes a trade for Moustakis a bit more likely as our lineup becomes ridiculously right-handed and it allows us to put Pujols at DH full-time. I would consider Ward and Hermosillo for Moustakis right now.
  22. I was just going to point out the Ohtani news. Do you really want to trade Suarez to fix one problem, only to leave yourself a potential hole in a different area?
  23. That's the thing, you aren't going to get that negotiating deal. Now I think if we trade for Moustakis, we could probably extend him, as I think he learned a good lesson about the size and value of his market. And, we could then slide Cozart down the road to 2B. But, I'm fairly certain Herrera would test the market. KC has no reason to keep Moustakis because they won't get him again and won't get anything for him. But, they aren't going to give him away. Herrera is the prime piece here for them, and getting 6 years of a 20-year lefty leading all the minors in Ks is nothing to slouch at. KC is in a rebuilding mode and is looking for a 3-5 year timeframe, so they only want prospects.
