A case for Michael Lorenzen

By @Inside Pitch, AngelsWin.com Senior Analyst Most people here will likely want to skip this, it's stat nerd heavy, but if you are interested in stuff like that you'd be well served to read this excellent article at FG... https://library.fangraphs.com/pitching/stuff-location-and-pitching-primer/ This post leans heavily on the information in this article but for anyone not wanting to read the long form or that doesn't want to have to look at a bunch of graphs you can basically foc

Trevor Bauer’s Deal is Bad for Baseball and Demands a 60/40/20 Rule To Evaluate Contracts With Opt-Outs

By David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer Quick! Let’s play a game. Which of these numbers is not like the other two: 40, 45, and 17. If you guessed 17, you’re a winner! If you also guessed that those numbers represent the reported annual salaries for Trevor Bauer is his pending 3-year deal with the Dodgers, you’d also be right. This deal is bad for baseball. It’s bad for baseball on many levels, and as such, if baseball had an effective commissioner, it should voided and rewo

Rays trade relief pitcher Hunter Strickland to the Angels

On the same day the Los Angeles Angels saw former first baseman Albert Pujols switch Los Angeles teams and sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers, they acquired a reliever from the Tampa Bay Rays. According to Rhett Bollinger of mlb.com on Saturday, the Angels acquired Hunter Strickland of Thomaston, GA from the Rays for a player to be named or cash considerations. The Angels become Strickland’s sixth Major League Baseball team. In addition to the Rays, he has pitched for the San Francisco Giant

Five Reasons The Angels Can Still Win Without Trout

By Tres Hefter, AngelsWin.com Columnist 1. There's plenty of offense still.  Previously, any time the Angels lost Trout for an extended period of time, it hurt. He was practically the sole above average contributor on a team which also more often than not had several offensive holes. In 2017, Trout missed 48 games and Andrelton Simmons was the next best hitter on the team, with a .752 OPS/102 OPS+. The Angels were 15th out of 15 AL teams in OPS with .712...including Trout.

Los Angeles Angels GM Perry Minasian on current roster depth

By Taylor Blake Ward, AngelsWin.com Columnist Tapping into their depth again, the Angels called up Kevin Padlo to fill a corner infield spot with both Anthony Rendon and Gio Urshela going to the injured list, with that depth becoming a key focus for the Angels success in 2023, both over the previous winter and with the upcoming trade deadline. Padlo becomes the 20th player of 48 the Angels have used in 2023 that was not originally on the Opening Day roster, which isn't uncommon, but wa

Between a Rock and a Hard Place: Unpacking the Jared Walsh conundrum

By Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Contributor Jared Walsh is no stranger to swinging himself out of a slow start. His debut season back in 2019 saw him log an OPS of .605 through 79 Major League AB’s before rocketing into All-Star form. This trend follows Walsh all the way back to the Minors as well. His breakout 2018 season saw Walsh hit .172 over the last few weeks of April into early May before blowing up with a Cal League leading 14 HRs to end the second month of the season. Though Walsh may

Los Angeles Angels Prospect Edgar Quero talks with AngelsWin.com

Interview conducted by Taylor Blake Ward, AngelsWin.com The Angels switch-hitting catching prospect from Cuba had a breakout season in Low-A hitting .312/.435/.530 with 17 home runs and 73 walks in 111 games. His advanced approach at the plate is what the Angels are most excited about, as he rarely swings at pitches out of the zone and barrels up mistake pitches. There's not much to dislike in Quero's game at the plate as he showed a good contact rate, power and an excellent eye which ascen

The Future of the Angels Outfield

By Jonathan Northrop, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer The emergence of Taylor Ward as an elite hitter--as well as the slow development of Adell--has put a bit of a crimp in the Angels outfield outlook. Before the year, it was reasonable to assume that the Angels would platoon Ward, Marsh, and Adell in the corner spots, and let them hack it out for playing time all year long. Even last year, I presented various configurations on how the Angels could platoon Marsh and Adell with Upton, assuming W

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: 12 Games In

12 games have come and gone, and, for lack of a better word, the results have left lots of room for conversation. The Angels are 6-6 - frankly, a result better than I expected, since I found our first month or so very difficult, schedule wise.  Despite this, I am not pleased with the result, because based on the events of said 12 games, we could easily be 8-4 or even 9-3.  That being said, we're still 2nd in the division and only a game back of the Rangers. With 150 games ahead, there's bee

Five Take-Aways From Los Angeles Angels GM Perry Minasian’s 2024 Chalk-Talk

By David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer  First and foremost, since we are opening the season in Baltimore, if you are reading this article, please take a moment to think upon all those who died on the Francis Scott Key Bridge. Thank you. Tuesday, before the Angels-Dodgers last game of Spring Training, Angels GM Perry Minasian met with season ticketholders for his annual “Chalk-Talk”. The event was moderated by Trent Rush, who did a great job, and asked most of the questions, alth

Angels Cole Fontenelle turning heads within the organization

Ryan Falla, AngelsWin.com Staff Reporter It appears fortunes are changing in Anaheim. Where once was an organization laid bare of any internal development is now an Angels future full of the most young promise they've had since their glory days of fifteen years past. Whereas that legacy run was fueled by homegrown talents so too does this window look to be forced open by the quality of youth across the organization. This years Spring Training has offered a glimpse into the star studded

Cole Fontenelle (Angels 2023 Seventh Round Draft Pick) Exclusive Interview with AngelsWin.com

By Taylor Blake Ward, AngelsWin.com Columnist Fontenelle took a roundabout way to Fort Worth after stops at Washington and McClennan CC before turning into a big-moment bat for the Horned Frogs in 2023. A switch-hitter, Fontenelle stays simple is his load with some drift in his hands. He has strength in his hands to manipulate the barrel and cover the entire zone from the left side where the physical strength in his six-foot-three, 205-pound frame lets him produce some bat speed and near ab

Los Angeles Angels 2023 Draft Review - Quotes on the draftees from Scouting Director Tim McIlvaine

By Taylor Blake Ward, AngelsWin.com Staff Writer   1st Round, 11th Overall: Nolan Schanuel, 1B, Florida Atlantic Schanuel was the best performer across Division-1 baseball in 2023, barely missing out on the slash line Triple Crown, leading the nation in on-base percentage, falling just .002 short of the batting title, and .047 short of the slugging title which went to a player at the high-elevation Brigham Young. Regardless of falling short of a fun title, Schanuel put up video ga

Three Different Paths Forward This Offseason

By Jonathan Northrop, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer With the upcoming Winter Meetings, there's lots of speculation as to what Minasian and the Angels might do, and with it a great deal of uncertainty. For one, Minasian has already plugged significant roster performance leakage with the acquisitions of Tyler Anderson (starting depth), Gio Urshela (bench depth), and Hunter Renfroe (starting outfielder). But holes remain, or at least questions: the bullpen lacks firepower, the starting middle in

Los Angeles Angels Prospect Jordyn Adams talks with AngelsWin.com

Photo by: Cristina Byrne-Sternberg/Rocket City Trash Pandas By Chuck Richter, AngelsWin.com When it comes to knowing Jordyn Adams, there are a lot of numbers to know. The most important number to know, though, is the number 22. Why that number? It's not the number of times Jordyn has stolen a base for the Trash Pandas without getting caught. That number is 15.  It's also not the total number of bases that Jordyn has stolen on the season. That number is 33, and he's only been

2021 Angelswin.com Trade Deadline Series: Likely Targets to Sell

By Robert Cunningham, Angelswin.com Senior Writer Now that we have identified probable purchases, it is time to flip the script and discuss what happens if the Angels become sellers, rather than buyers. For the purposes of this article we will only discuss those assets that actually have some level of reasonable trade value as it will not be the best use of time trying to find someone with minimal or even zero value, like Tony Watson or Kurt Suzuki, a hypothetical home on another team.

2021 Angelswin.com Trade Deadline Series: Probable Assets to Acquire

By Robert Cunningham, Angelswin.com Senior Writer Now that we have spent some time getting the lay of the land, it is time to do a bit more speculative analysis, based on the Angels' needs, if they become buyers. Knowing the Halos most probable four areas of need and the list we created of likely sellers, we can use FanGraphs sortable statistics, looking at possible catchers, starters, right fielders, and relievers that might be targets of interest for the Angels and are also likely to

Angels Pitcher Griffin Canning Talks with AngelsWin.com

Interview conducted by David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer One of the many rising stars in the Angels Minor Leagues is pitcher Griffin Canning. A local boy, out of UCLA and Rancho Santa Margarita, Griffin grew up an Angels fan and yearns to pitch for his home town team. The Angels were lucky to get Griffin in the second round of the 2017 draft. After drafting him, the Angels decided to be cautious with him, due to his large workload in college, and shut him down for the remainde
