2017 Trade Deadline Series: Methodology

In order to gain some insight into the trade market we first need to determine which teams are in contention using projected standings, where they need help, and then examine each Angels trade chip and determine if there is an actual fit and opportunity for any of those clubs. Later in the series we will use this same information as a basis for how the Angels can improve if they are within striking distance near the deadline. To get started we first need to define which teams are most likely to

2017 Trade Deadline Series: Introduction

As the Angels enter mid-June, with July slowly creeping towards them, they find themselves 13 games back in the A.L. West behind the dominating Houston Astros. Clearly this deficit will be a steep hill to climb and combined with the loss of superstar Mike Trout to the disabled list for at least the next 5-8 weeks it is becoming increasingly clear that, barring a massive winning streak between now and the middle of July that keeps the team in the Wild Card conversation, Billy Eppler needs to pos

At what point do we take Eric Young Jr. seriously?

Sample Size. It seems just about every single major leaguer is capable of being a superstar for short periods of time.  The great ones take what’s been so good, and extend it over longer periods of time.  This is a fairly simple concept.  But even Major League Baseball has a way of convoluting things.  For example, if a 30-something year old minor league journeyman has a good month in the majors, it’s a hot streak, but if a 22 year old does it, it’s a breakout.  Then there’s the post-hype sleep

Q & A with Angels 10th round pick Daniel Procopio

Daniel Procopio, the Angels 10th round selection out of Niagara University, was kind enough to take some time to answer some questions about his draft day experience and tell us a little about himself. Brent Maguire: What was your draft day experience like? Did you have any idea of where you may be selected at and when you were selected, how did you feel? Daniel Procopio: “My draft day experience was unbelievable. I wish I could say that being drafted before would make the anxiety and exciteme

Q & A with Angels 8th round pick Connor Riley

Connor Riley, the Angels 8th round selection out of the University of South Carolina Aiken, was kind enough to answer some questions about his baseball background and the experience of going through the MLB Draft process. The right hander from Aurora, Illinois was selected 235th overall on the 2nd day of the MLB Draft. On the draft day experience and his knowledge of where he may get drafted: “I had a feeling I was going to go the second day. That’s what a lot of the scouts had been telling me

Angels 2017 Draft Analysis: Rounds 1-10

Round 1(10th overall): OF Jordon Adell, Ballard High School(Kentucky) Approx pick value: 4.4 million dollars An almost obvious fit from the get go, the Angels selected the highly talented prep outfielder from Kentucky. Adell absolutely demolished high school pitchers this year to the tune of a .562 batting average and 25 home runs compared to only 10 strikeouts. He played against weaker competition than most of your usual top prep outfielders but the raw talent combined with the video game lik

The Angels needed a draft like this (so far)

The Angels minor league system has lacked big time upside for years.  Sure, they’ve always had depth (and that’s where most experts fail at their job when they call the Angels minor league system “shallow”), but they’ve lacked the big time talent since the organization changed directions.  Under the Stonemason regime, we saw a hoarding of prospects that resulted in some disappointments (Mathis, McPherson, Wood) and some pretty solid players (Aybar, Kendrick, Napoli).  But it was under the Tony R

Last Week in Angels Baseball: The “Hell is Getting Chilly” Edition

By Glen McKee, Totally Unprepared For This Weather My first choice for a title this week was the “Cam You Dig It?” edition, but then I woke up this morning and went to take my dogs for a walk, and it was 44 degrees in Pinon Hills, with a breeze.  I’m not saying Hell is freezing over because the Angels won a series in Houston, but there may be a few demons looking for the jackets that they’d packed away since a bit after Trump was elected.  However, I am saying that Cameron Maybin was in large p

The future of the Angels rotation

Just for a moment, imagine what a healthy Angels rotation could potentially look like. In a perfect world, Garrett Richards, Andrew Heaney, Matt Shoemaker, Tyler Skaggs and Nick Tropeano would create the makings of an average or better rotation, while all 5 guys were also in the middle of their primes while coming at cheaper, under market value prices. Add in rotation depth with J.C. Ramirez, Alex Meyer, Nate Smith and possibly some veteran signings and you have a 8-10 starters who can win you b

Point/Counterpoint: What Song Should Replace “Buttercup?” By Glen Mckee and Nate Trop, Angelswin.com Senior Pontificators It is June, the Angels are in second place, Mike Trout and just about every pitcher in the entire organization is hurt (Glen: I had to check the standings after this because I didn’t believe we’re still in second place.  Not that it matters, but wow.).  The team is in a death spiral and there isn’t much to debate right now, because who cares?  That said, the one thing peo

Last Week in Angels Baseball: The “The Germans Probably Have a Word For This” Edition

By Glen McKee, angelswin.com Chronicler of Misery Last week was another week of Angels baseball, and of all the weeks of Angels baseball this year this was the Angels-est of them all.  A significant milestone was achieved, the Angels fell further behind the red-hot Astros, and we all watched and shrugged.  The week could be best summed up by this tweet from Jeff Fletcher at the end of Sunday’s game: That’s the most Angels way to lose the game and the series, and I’m sure the Germans have a w

Albert Pujols: 600 historic home runs

Albert Pujols joined elite company on Saturday night, becoming the 9th member of the 600 home run club. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 4th inning at Angel Stadium, Pujols lofted a 363 foot fly ball right down the left field line that reached an apex on 141 feet and just snuck it fair past the foul pole. Pujols’ 600th home run was the first in grand slam fashion, further cementing his legacy of accomplishing events in grand style on the baseball field. Much has been made about Albert

Angels bullpen could become expensive in 2018

Enough ink has been spilled as to Billy Eppler’s bang up job building an Angels bullpen that is surprisingly the strongest we’ve seen in years.  But if there’s one thing we know about valuable commodities in baseball, it’s that teams don’t want to lose it, and will pay handsomely to retain it.  This, along with inflation has contributed toward the meteoric rise in free agency contracts.  And speaking of free agents, the Angels have a few more worth keeping than anyone anticipated a year ago. The drastically different Bud Norris

On Thursday night, the Angels took the lead in the 8th inning after Kole Calhoun drilled his 2nd home run of the night, giving the Angels a narrow 2-1 lead entering the 9th inning. Angels manager Mike Scioscia threw a change up, bringing in Jose Alvarez not only to face the first batter but the first 5 batters of the inning. Alvarez faced 3 lefties in the inning, including Jason Castro, who singled home 2 go ahead runs to give the Twins the lead and eventually the win. Immediately, people questi

Setting the Record

All this talk about Albert Pujols and the records he’s setting got me thinking a little bit. Specifically, it got me wondering a little bit about which record I would want to set if I were a Major Leaguer. At first I thought about the homerun record, which for a variety of reasons would be quite an interesting record to set. Let’s face it—there’s nothing greater than hitting a homerun in a game. The sheer beauty of it is just something to behold. I never hit a homerun in a game where I played,

The significance of Mike Trout’s injury

Through 54 games in 2017, the Angels have managed to pull off a decent 26-28 record. Just consider how remarkable that is. Garrett Richards, Tyler Skaggs, Andrew Heaney, Nick Tropeano and Alex Meyer, the makings of a potential good starting rotation, are all on the disabled list. The injuries have hit the bullpen too, sending Cam Bedrosian, Huston Street and Andrew Bailey on the shelf for an extended period of time. The offense has significantly underperformed to the tune of a 93 wRC+ and ranks

Last Week in Angels Baseball: The “Oh F&%#, Mike Trout is Injured” Edition

By Glen McKee, angelswin.com Staff Writer A few things happened last week in Angels baseball.  None of them, none of them, has any importance compared to Mike Trout hurting his thumb and being removed from the game yesterday.  Try to imagine this time without Mike Trout for any significant time.  It’s like Disneyland without the rides and everything else that is Disneyland.  It’s like going to In-N-Out and getting a grilled cheese with no sauce.  It sucks!  Please, Mike Trout, don’t be out too

An optimistic view for the rest of 2017

The Angels weren’t a playoff team last year.  I know the popular excuse was simply injuries, but let’s be honest, even if Richards, Heaney, Tropeano and Skaggs were completely healthy, they still didn’t have the bullpen to hold a lead, nor the offense to make a lead stand.  They likely would’ve been a good team, but not a contender.  Injuries can do that.  But the Angels have experienced the very same setbacks this season, and are still hovering around .500, good enough for second place in a div

The Scioscia Era – Where did it go wrong?

by Nathan Trop, AngelsWin.com Columnist The Angels, once a perennial playoff contender and World Champions in 2002, are coming off their sixth season missing the playoffs in the last 7 years, the only playoff appearance being a division series sweep by eventual Champions, the Kansas City Royals.  For the last five years they have had the best player in baseball, payroll is as high as it has ever been, and yet outside of the 2014 season the teams have been average at best.  I thought I would loo

The importance of the 2017 MLB Draft for the Angels

The Major League Baseball Amateur Draft is the most complex draft among all the major american sports. The draft lasts 40 rounds, partially due to the necessity to fill out various minor league baseball rosters. Teams have allotted amounts of money to spend for each pick, so picking the best available talent in every single round isn’t a realistic option, although it’s a bit easier to pick the best available early on this year thanks to the new CBA agreement on slot values. The trickiest part of

Last Week in Angels Baseball: The “Meatloaf” Edition

By Glen McKee, angelswin.com Staff Writer Meatloaf, not the delicious food but the man pictured above (aka Michael Lee Aday, something I know without having to google it, please applaud) is famous for two things: his songs, and for having bitch tits in the movie Fight Club.  Hey, don’t blame me, that’s a quote.  As evidence: Anyway, Meat’s second- or third-most-famous song is “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.”  That’s a good way to look at the results from the last week of Angels baseball.  Yeah,

That moment when you realize everything you knew about prospects was a lie…

I’ve made it a hobby of predicting the future, quite unsuccessfully.  I am not a prophet (at least, I don’t think I am), but I sure do like baseball.  I loved playing it, watching it, dissecting it.  It helped me maximize my limited skills as a player and has led to some side jobs on the scouting side of things.  With a new family, I don’t travel as much as I used to, which makes the use of milb.tv all the more important.  While it offers limited views, it helps with repeat exposure and allows m

The perennially great yet different Mike Trout

It’s 2017 and Mike Trout still remains very good at playing baseball. This is not a surprise. He has been great in every single full season he has had in the big leagues dating back to 2012. So far in 2017, Mike Trout is hitting .352/.450/.752 along with a 225 wRC+ that ranks 1st in baseball. Trout just homered in his 4th straight game and has the chance to homer in 5 straight games Tuesday, which would tie an Angels record(Bobby Bonds in 1977). He also led baseball with a 171 wRC+ last year. Tr
