  1. Mora had injuries to deal with this year. But the fact still remains that UCLA still can't beat teams that punch them in the mouth. The team plays soft.

And the penalties. Good Lord. In the past two years UCLA must lead the PAC12 in penalties. That's a coaching issue.

This!  The penalties must stop!  The defense was doomed this year when our top DL, LB, DB all got injured early in the season.  I'm not very optimistic about the defense going into next season right now.  The offense on the other hand should be one of the best in the country.

  2. Clearly salaries leads to increases in costs - but again, I'm not talking about magically creating money but redistributing it. Costs rise because the wealthy want to maintain profit margins. This, of course, is the problem with the minimum wage. An increase in the minimum wage would have to be offset with other restrictions. The point being, we need to lower the ceiling as we raise the floor. Yes, I know, sounds like the evil "S" word!

But what's your solution, Geoff? How do you think we should decrease poverty and strengthen the middle class? Or do you not care? I'm honestly curious.

I'm stumped on how population and cost of living relate - can you explain? (I'm not being facetious, I honestly don't know).

So if you think taxes should be reduced, what do we do about our crumbling infrastructure? Are you OK with the fact that US is now decades behind much of Western Europe, South Korea, and Japan in terms of quality of services, transportation systems, high speed internet, etc. What about the exorbitant cost of health care?

But I agree with you on the military, no issues there.

I personally would reduce the military budget, reduce corporate tax breaks, increase taxes on the top 20% in an increasing curve. I would then re-allocate those funds to abolish Obamacare and replace it with a single-payer system--basically free health care for all--and improve infrastructure, education, etc.

I thought you were just focused on taxing the super rich AJ?  If that is the case you should only be raising taxes on the top .1% or something like that.  A so called 1%er making 380K in California is definitely not super rich.

  3. Geoff - Two questions. One, where are we going to find unbiased views and information Two, does the fact that the chart is from Think Progress automatically invalidate it? Numbers can be used in clever ways, but they generally don't lie.

Glen - careful, or you'll end up in Trump territory because the cons argue that part of the reason there are more people than jobs is because of immigrants. And it would be hard to deny that there is some truth to this. Not to mention that in just about every instance I've experience or heard of, Mexican immigrants are better, harder workers than non-immigrants.

Clearly we need to create more jobs, and not just low paying manual jobs. We also need to improve wages and/or reduce the cost of living. How to do this? Well, I can think of two things. One, re-allocate government funds towards creating jobs to re-build infrastructure. Stop throwing money at military contractors to make trillion-dollar planes that don't work. Two, tax the **** out of the top 1% and big corporations and use the money to...create jobs and re-build infrastructure, improve health care (single payer), and increase the wages of those making below $100K.

The money is there, it just isn't trickling down.

AJ, what level of income do you consider the top 1%?

  4. Or they can beat UK and Gonzaga

Tournament games are not decided this early.  After a rough start, nice work against some very good teams.

At the time of that post I thought the Bruins had no chance against UK and Zaga.  I'm very happy the team has done a complete 180 and looks like a very tough team to beat right now.

  5. That's correct, but Arizona's top bracket rate for state income tax is 4.54%, much lower than California.  (Wait until there is a team in Nevada, that might be a much better draw for high ticket guys.)  I don't believe the city income tax in Phoenix, which depends exactly where you live is much to sneeze about.  I don't think it was an important factor in his decision, but it's kind of icing on the cake.  Probably gives him an extra $1-$2 million per year.  If you live and work in California, and you can't shelter much income you could end up giving back almost half of what you make to the government (federal and state) in taxes when you're in his bracket.  It's not as easy to shelter income as it used to be, but I'm sure his financial advisers will ferret out a few.

More than half...39.6% fed, 13.3% state.
