Literally everyone stopped what they were doing to watch Griffey play. Lots of people do the same for trout, but not nearly as many as Griffey. For that reason alone Griffey was better.
"In his prime Vlad was a five tool player. He had speed, an arm like a cannon, ability to steal bases, hit for average, for power, he had it all and it wasn't from a syringe"
Are you talking about Abreu because he did all those things too?
Yep he got a higher % than Mickey Mantle.
I said HOF/Borderline HOF players. Gwynn is HOF and Abreu is borderline. Your making an argument out of nothing.
What about home runs, doubles and stolen bases. We aren't saying Gwynn wasn't great, his ability to hit the ball where the runners weren't was amazing. I also don't let that limit my ability to see Abreu was almost as good because he had other contributions that Gwynn didn't have. We're talking about two great players that are hall of fame/borderline HOF. I think Gwynn was a better ball player, and WAR certainly agrees with that. But Abreu was no slouch and deserved to be in the HOF conversation.
I remember the disappointment when the Angels released Glenn Allen Hill. Remember the mammoth home runs he used to hit. My friends and I I used to stop whatever we were doing to watch his at bats. They were insane to release him
Abreu had a better first half offensively. Not to mention at the end of the year Abreu had 27 stolen bases and Vlad had 14. Vlad also had 19 errors in the outfield that year.
Do you really think Vlad was the better player that year?
