  1. Literally nothing else changed about the market. The TV territory did not expand. The logo did not change to reflect the city. The stadium did not move. If an advertiser is willing to pay lots of extra money for literally zero extra market share then either they are terrible at their jobs, or marketing is 95% BS.

I get why thats a question, and I get why you think that, but its more than that (or maybe less). NY buyers only look at market size on the sheet, numbers etc. They dont live in LA or Anaheim and have personal connections to the team or city. And even if they did, they are dictated to buy a certain way. Being affected by their just cut and dry way of buying, I find it frustrating, but you have to play the game. Arte did.

    For example:

NY Buyers have been told by McDonalds to buy only Top 20 markets. So the buyers grab their sheet and look at top 20 markets and allocate $ based on viewership size, ratings etc...If The Angels are still, on paper, considered market #28, they dont get McDonalds money, even though they are on TV in market #2. Its very black and white, cut and dry. NY doesnt look deeper than that. they just dont. So now, Angels,on paper, even though nothings changed but the name, are considered market #2. They are now going to get some McyDs $$.

  2. *shakes my head* - so no specifics.

EVERY team is worth a lot more $$ now than in 2004.  Rising tide lifts all boats.  You attribute the fantastic RSN tv deal to the name change, I attribute it to the fact that the inventory for live programming is very small, and these contracts for all teams have become very valuable.

Yes, but not every team still has the $$ that large market teams have, even though every team is worth more. And Arte has been praised at how far he has brought the team in worth. And how can I have specifics if I dont have the teams financial records lol

Look, I talked directly to one of the guys who worked with Arte on the change, a guy who goes/went into Budweiser and sells the team. Thats what he told me. Plain and simple. Believe it or dont.

  3. Shouldn't that line # be # of viewers?  Doesn't matter what the size of the market is, if no one is watching.  That does fall into the equation, but again, it starts with market size

That does come into play of course, but it starts with market size. Market # 2 is going to get allocated more money to work with than market #28 when it comes to the buyers. But yeah if your viewership is down that will affect dollars as well.

  4. okay, I will play along:  *SPECIFICALLY* what dollars did Arte get from slapping "LA of Anaheim" on?  Be specific.

I dont have the Angels Accounting records, so I cant say specifically, but it is common knowledge that The Angels are worth more $$ now by a lot then they were when he bought them. They were also able to get that HUGE TV contract a couple of years ago bc of the name change (Again capitilizing on #2 market identity), and since have been able to pay large amounts of $$$ to free agents and sign Trout to a pretty large deal all the while dancing on the luxury tax line. That money didnt just fall out of the sky.

That wasnt happening when we were considered a medium/small market team.

  5. If you had no idea that the Angels weren't part of the second largest media market before, and all it took was Arte changing the name from "Anaheim Angels" to "Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim", you should be fired from your job.

    You guys are impossible.

Large media buyers In NY base their $ amount on what line you are on a page (market size), so if your name is on line 28, you aren't going to get same amount of dollars as line #2. Thats a fact. I know this. I work in the industry.

Small market teams have less $$ than Major market teams for a reason. Doesnt mean they cant win, KC, Angels in 2002 etc..but there is a reason why NY, Chicago and Los Angeles teams have more $$$ than anyone else. TV $$$ and Advertising $$ is why. Arte wanted in on that #2 money, and he has achieved that with the name change.

  6. haha - yes, the people in charge of millions of dollars of advertising had no idea that the Angels, regardless of name, were part of the 2nd largest market.  No idea at all.

It took Arte the Genius to open their eyes.

Dude, I talked to the people who had part in the process, Jay Johnstone in particular. That's one of the biggest reasons, straight from the horses mouth.

  7. As if anyone from LA is actually going to become an Angels fan?  Especially when we havent won a World Series in how long?  LA is a Dodgers town and thats quite okay with me because take a look at their fans and the environment in that stadium and then take a look at ours.

We arent going to win over the LA market.  If your argument is that we did it to look cool for the guys at ESPN and the rest of the sports media, thats just stupid.

OMG! OMG! OMG!!! I find it crazy that not only are people still pissed off about the name change, but after all the discussions still have absolutely no clue why the change was necessary. MIND BOGGLING TO ME!

    Heres how it works:

The LA Dodgers and Anaheim Angels sales folks walk into Budweiser/Home Depot/McDonalds/anyadvertiserwithbigdollars

They say, "Oh hey Los Angels Dodgers, TV market #2 in the entire U S of A we will give you 10 million dollars for the upcoming season." then turn to Anaheim Angels and say 'Anaheim Angels, market #28 in the entire U S of A, we'll give you $1 million for the year. Have a nice day".

The Angels are on TV in the #2 market, but werent getting the revenue that goes with it due to the name, and the identity, until Arte, who is really good at marketing came along. Do you get it Now? Thats why NJ teams use NY, thats why KC Royals arent called Independence Royals. Its about TV markets and the $$$$$$ that go with it.

  8. I don't know,. I like Jeter. I tried not to because he a Skankee, but the dude is a clas act. And quite frankly, he has has some impact on how Trout plays, with class. If Jeter is Trouts hero, and Trout plays with the same respect, determination and hard work for the Angels because of Jeters inspiration ( at least in part, I realize Trouts parents have huge impact), then I'll even love Jeter for it.

  9. Brodie Brazil, host of the A's pre and post-game show, is not happy. HAHAHA

Also, what kind of name is Brodie Brazil?

So you're an MLB team, openly telling/coordinating fans to distract the opponent batter with phones & flashlights?.... #karma

Really awesome of many #Angels fans to shine their phones & flashlights during Vogt at bat. #Tacky

  10. Knee injuries are a bitch on the waistline if you aren't s professorial athlete with trainers up your ass all day everyday. I tore my ACL and minisiscus and I also sat on my ass for close to a year. Now, because the knee is t what it use to be and I'm not a 24 yr old professional athlete, getting rid of the sandwiches isn't an easy task.

I found yesterday's news to be a positive because I was thinking 2016, but now maybe he'll be in by June of 2015? That's good news.

  11. There's definitely a lot of big names this offseason. Would have to backload a deal since 2016 is pretty rough with CJ/Weav/Hamilton/Pujols/Trout all getting significant raises. It's workable though since Weav/CJ are off the books after 2016, and you still will have young guys like Skaggs, Richards, Santiago, Shoemaker in the fold and under club control during that time. Halos will likely be major players for one of the big name FA arms this winter, especially if RIchards ends up having to miss part of next season

Really hope it's not a torn patellar tendon, but the quotes from Weav, etc don't sound good.

I almost gaurantee its a torn patella. The fact that a bulge was in his quad, and he was pointing to his quad (The knee cap goes up intot he quad on a torn patella)...Not good...2016 might be the next time we see him pitching.

  12. that does look pretty granrly. Sucks to lose him, but hopefully its a relatively minor surgery and hes ready to go next year

Unfortuntely, based on Richards pointing at his quad when they were talking to him, it looks more like his patella snapped and his knee cap was in his quad. NOT GOOD AT ALL. A co worker of mine had that happen to him, and when he saw richards down, and pointing at his quad, and the bulge coming out of his quad, he said it looked just like his injury. It took him, a non athlete and older, over a year to get back to just walking normal. if thats what it is, and I strongly suspsect it is, we wont see GRich until 2016 or late 2015 at best.
