  1. I know that he's not really considered a prospect, but he's had a pretty nice minor league career so far.  Great discipline, good speed, decent pop.  Can he defend?  If so, seems like he might be a better 4th OF option than Shuck.

If you've ever seen him throw... he has a cannon of an arm....and with good speed I think he is a very capable defender in the games I've seen him in SL.

  2. Just imagine if we kept our former bullpen pitchers

    Darren O'Day - 53.1 IP, 53 SO, 1.05 WHIP, 2.36 ERA

    Francisco Rodriguez - 34.1 IP, 41 SO, 1.05 WHIP, 2.10 ERA

    Joel Peralta - 52.1 IP, 55 SO, 1.11 WHIP, 3.10 ERA

    Fernando Rodney - 49.2 IP, 66 SO, 1.49 WHIP, 3.99 ERA

    Latroy Hawkins - 54.1 IP, 40 SO, 1.27 WHIP, 2.98 ERA

    Darren Oliver - 41 IP, 32 SO, 1.27 WHIP, 3.73 ERA

    Jordan Walden - 41.2 IP, 48 SO, 1.06 WHIP, 2.59 ERA

    Kevin Gregg - 47.1 IP, 41 SO, 1.33 WHIP, 2.85 ERA

    Will Smith - 22 IP, 23 SO, .95 WHIP, 3.27 ERA

We would be in the wild card hunt with this bullpen

Alex Torres - 40.0 IP, 50 SO, .80 Whip, 1.35 ERA, 4-0. Arguably the best reliever in the AL.

    Kazmir will haunt us forever.

Moral of the story should be that the Angels don't participate in trades for pitchers with the Rays or Braves ever again.

  3. All that said, I was surprised to find that there's one obscure Fangraphs statistic for which Trout is worst in the league. Its called "Clutch" and it measures a players performance in high leverage situations vs. his normal performance. Of 85 qualifying AL players, Trout is #85 at -2.34.

You know, its been kind of irking me for awhile - that it seems that Trout has performed particularly poorly in high leverage situations this year. Seems like the numbers bear this out.

Fangraphs' "clutch" stat compares a player against himself. So if Trout's OBP is .450 in high-leverage situations (which I would say isn't too shabby) he is declared "not clutch" because his normal OBP is the same.

That said, his -2.3 "clutch" reading shows the need for improvement.

    According to baseball-reference, Trout's OPS:

    Low Leverage: 1.083

    Medium Leverage: 1.052

    High Leverage: .658

There again the stats are hiding the truth IMO. His OBP in those same situations is .463, .402, and .365. What's killing Trout's OPS in high leverage situations is his slugging % of .293 (compared to .621 and .649 in the other situations.) In a high leverage situation, it seems as if Trout is changing his approach and taking singles to extend the inning and get on base. I don't mind this approach (if this really is the case) and I also would bet he improves on this with time.
