  1. Seattle has done a very good job improving their offense and their pitching is very good.

    They're for real.

what worries me is the whole "playing to their competition" deal . . .

M's are 28-28 vs. teams under .500 and 39-28 vs. .500 or better teams

they start a 3-game series with Philly today and then Boston over the weekend

  2. At the Big A.  Throw everything that you "think you know" about the M's rotation out the door.

    Not it our house.

Angels will take at least 2 of 3.

Very possible that the M's "road warrior ways" will catch up to them in the second half . . .

    • 27-18 on the road
    • 24-26 at home

and, specifically vs the Halos: 3-0 on the road, 3-3 at home .

Should be a great series :)

  3. I'm much more concerned about our 4-10 record against the A's/M's/Rangers.

    FWIW (maybe nothing) . . .

    • the Halos have gone 19-6 vs teams under .500 and 10-17 vs teams .500 or better
    • the M's have gone 9-11 vs team under .500 and 17-15 vs team .500 or better

As I mentioned in the game thread, the M's seem to play up (or down) to their competition . . .

Clearly, they need to do better vs the lessor teams.

  4. Yep, the "Cy something" pitchers usually don't throw mid 90s heat and wicked breaking pitches.

Felix, Iwakuma, Paxson, and Walker = sick 1 through 4 in 2015.

    If we're lucky, they'll get a head start on 2015 by about mid-May 2014 :)

  5. I was at the M's / Halos game at Safeco last night and it was funny when they did a live cut in to the Giants / Pads game on the big screen between innings in Seattle...

Tim already had one out in the 9th, we got to see the 2nd out live but then they changed the video back to our live game stats, lineup and such... and the crowd booed long and loud. They ended up showing the 27th out and ensuing celebration in replay (between batters in the live game in Seattle) .... and the crowd roared  :)

    Congrats, Timmy!

  6. It brings my heart joy to see the Mariners rankings in offensive categories for the month of July :)

Yes, it's a small sample size but, not sure they've had things clicking this well in any two week period over the last several years. Of course Rauuuuuuul had been a huge part of the production but, so have MANY of the young guys and that's what is so encouraging.

Obviously, even at this pace, they're not likely even sniffing a WC but, if they can continue to produce during the second half, it will go along way toward building their confidence for the future and helping them to learn to win (not to mention, help give the FO a good idea of who's going to "stick and stay" and what gaps need to be filled in an off season that should see the M's fairly flush with cash).

Kinda unfortunate that the "gelling" comes just prior to the ASB  . . .

Here's hoping the break doesn't affect any momentum gained but, just provides rest and recharge.

  7. In other MLB action, it's hard to believe that 41-year-old Ibanez has 20 HR's (he hit another one tonight).

Even harder to believe that Raul's now 21 home run total leads the ALW . . .

    Cruz 20

    Trumbo 19

    Carter 17

  8. Mariners now have a better record than the Angels.

Didnt think I'd be typing that this season.

They did before last night too.

But, yeah, not really expected when you compare the line ups.

    another interesting nugget . . .

Reminder- Joe Blanton (1-10 5.87 ERA) signed for more $ than Hisashi Iwakuma (7-2 2.06 ERA) did during the winter

    Interesting lefty-lefty matchup tomorrow . . .

And then there's Felix on Thursday ~ will he finally solve his nemesis?

  9. Albert is awesome!

    That is all

And, right now, Tom is not.

After converting his first eleven chances, he's blown 4 since May 20 (including Bonderman's last start, where he pitched 8 shutout innings and then Tom gave up FIVE in the 9th . . . to the Astros).

That pitch to Albert, however, was the first homer he'd given up all season.

  10. Joe Blaunders.

We actually refer to him as "Safeco Joe" . . .

In 3 starts and 22.1 IP at home (vs. HOU, TEX and BAL) he is 2-0 w/a 0.81ERA and a 0.76WHIP

sure would be nice if he could take that show on the road  :P

  11. Wasn't their closer a bartender not too long ago? He was out of baseball and everything.

Yep. Tom was drafted by the Brewers in 2002 and suspended in 2004 (after testing positive for pot) and he quit baseball and became a bartender (hence his nickname) for 5 years. He made his comeback with the M's org in 2010 and earned the M's closer role in June last season (when League was sucking) and ended up with 29 saves on the season.

  12. I watched the game from about the sixth inning on. I don't believe that Vargas could have done much more. Two solo home runs in eight innings of work isn't a bad outing at all. Of course, when your own team is busy making scrubs look like the second coming of Bob Gibson...

    If Kuma (of the 1.69 ERA, 0.69 WHIP and 37 K's in 6 starts) is a "scrub" . . .

I'd like to see stats on those you consider an ACE  ;)
