  1. Yesterday at around 1:30 PM I cut out of work and jumped in my car to journey down to San Diego. I have been looking forward to this trip for months and was geeked out as I began the drive. I put on some tunes to enjoy the ride when the freeway came to a stop in Long Beach. Just a little bit of traffic due to the construction through Los Al on the 405, no big deal I had plenty of time since the event wasn't taking place till 5:30. As expected. the freeway opened up and I jumped on it wanting to make up for some lost time. As I hit San Onofre we came to a complete stop. The time 2:30. For the next two and a half hours it was nothing but stop and go traffic all the way to San Diego. A two hour trip became a three and a half hour trip, just ridiculous. However, I pulled in to Balboa Park at 5:00 PM, still have 30 minutes to spare at least.

I walk in to the San DIego History Center right as they were closing to the public to get ready for the History Happy Hour. I am told to go wait outside and that they will be opening the doors at 5:30. I could us a little walk anyway and Balboa is beautiful so no big deal. As I exit the museum a gentleman asks me to hold up and that he can use some help setting up. I gladly accepted but didn't want to act like a normal beer geek so I acted like it was no big deal that this was Pat Mcllhenney, owner of Alpine. We start chatting it up as I help carry in the BBQ and beer he had brought along for the event. His son and I hooked up the kegs and began to taste test the beers to make sure they are all fine, the duet and nelson took 3 or 4 glasses to ensure quality for the beer geeks and history nerds that are about to come in.

It was a great evening as I was meeting quite a few people from the beer culture down here. At 7 pm they start the screening of Suds County, USA. This is a pretty cool documentary about the history of breweries in SD. I highly recommend it, sudscountyusa.com. Anyway, as I walk out of the screening I go over to thank Pat and his family for a great evening. We are talking and others are winding down. A couple guys come over and I notice that they are all guys who are in the video, Vince from Pizza Port and Tomme the head brewer there. I chat them up for a few and figure that I need to go check into my hotel pretty soon. Pat asks if I want to help shut down and he highly recommends that I stay. He didn't have to pull my arm to stay. As the doors were locked there was about ten of us left. I quickly realize that outside of myself and one Alpine employee, I am at a Quaff event. Growlers quickly hit the table and we all huddle around and begin tasting these home brews from these brewing masters. If you don't know Quaff, you need to. It was just amazing to try all of their experimental beers and the night made it seem like the terrible drive down here was days ago.

Now off to Alpine to enjoy some more beer and take him up on my free growler. Then its off to Societe, White Labs, Hess, Helms and possibly Rip Current, Alesmith or Rough Draft. It is going to be a fun day and hopefully top tomorrow. I plan on having 3 or 4 growlers in the cooler by nights end. Bottle share anyone? The one thing last night did was entice me to try and home brew and reiterate how great the craft beer industry is.

How awesome, I love when something unexpected like that happens!  Craft beer people really ARE the best people!

  2. Today's pickup:

    Bootleggers - Lupulin Thrill

    Bootleggers - Knuckle Sandwich

    Beachwood Brewing - Thrillseeker

    Sixpoint Craft Ales - Resin

At Bootlegger's Tasting Rm today they had a cask of Knuckle Sandwich w/ grapefruit zest.  Was really good!

  3. Selling a yard of 120 would be highly irresponsible and a lawsuit in the waits.

Hahaha I don't think they'd do that, they've had Sam Adams Utopias available at Yard House before, only a small pour.

  4. I've had so many rare beers that aren't disttributed here. And I still have yet to try 120 minute, it's been so elusive. I want it so bad.

Regular at my bf's work brought him a bottle of 120, he was able to get a case of it in Nevada.  It's only brewed couple times of year but, this time of year year it usually starts becoming available.

  5. Wish I could make the Bootleggers event, well the whole Summer Fan Fest in general.

On a different day would there be enough people to do an Angels Win Bottle Share?

Twitter peeps are doing an #AngelsFamily bottle share at Bootlegger's on August 3rd.  You could always go then!  : )

  6. Golden Road has gained a pretty bad reputation due their original release of beers being underwhelming and some tactics that other local brewers are accusing them of. If the latter is true, I will blackball them but for now I have to give them some credit as they have revamped their line with a new brewmaster.

Have any of you had any of their beer? Point The Way was bad at first but now is pretty good. Wolf Among Weeds is legit as is Heal the Bay IPA. Their Golden Kolsch is also awesome.

I've had their beer on more than one occasion.  It's solid, but it's not something I seek out to purchase on a regular basis.

  7. One of my local spots, I am there two or three times a week. I liked HM, not so much with SOS but I am not big on stouts. I like my beer big and hoppy usually.

Lucky you!  I love when I'm able to make it out there.  I didn't like SOS first couple times I had it last yr but now am a fan.  I'm the same way w/ styles of beer I tend to like, the hoppier the better.

  8. Yup I love FW also. Had their Double Jack (my dipa standby), Pivo Pilsner as well, which was light, crisp alternative to the other two. Wanted to try their Double DBA (12% abv), but they were out. Next time.

Nice!  You should try to hit up their location in Bulleton next time, they have their BarrelWorks area w/ barrel aged beers....soooooo good.

  9. At El Cerrito in Corona. They didn't have the O' De Tart but the rest of their sours were around $25. Cascade seems to have jumped in price to $29-37. They still have Supplication at $13.99 for the 12oz but were out. Other sours were pricey as well. I know they generally cost more because of aging, but damn $40 for a bomber.

I haven't been there, have you ever gone to La Bodega in Riverside?  They usually have good selection.  $40 does seem a bit high.  Vendome in Fullerton usually has good selection/prices as does Total Wine & More.  They've been improving their craft beer selection lately.

  10. Anyone know of any good sours that don't cost much?

The ones I came across are all in the $25-35 range.

Where are you shopping at?  I'm not sure how much the ones cost that I've had.  Russian River and the Bruery always make solid sours.  Have you been to Newport Beach Brewing?  Their brewer loves to make sours too.

  11. Shooting for a blackout or.pass out with the TV on, but am likely going to fall short:

    The Breury Trades of Wind

    Allagash Tripel Reserve

    Upright Seven

I'll probably just get buzzed and make a frozen French bread pizza.

    Sounds like a fun afternoon.  : )
