Top-50 Greatest Moments in Angels Baseball

    By AngelsWin.com

AngelsWin.com's Top-50 Greatest Moments in Angels Baseball When the word went out that AngelsWin.com was compiling a list of the 50 greatest moments in Angels history, my first thought, sadly enough, was to the tumultuous moments in our team’s history: I thought of how the Angels have always been second-class citizens living in the shadow of Chavez Ravine; or how we have spent most of our history grasping at greatness, yet coming up empty. I did not immediately think about the World Series

Taking stock as we approach spring training (and my take on the Perry Minasian Plan, v. 2024)

    By Chuck

By Jonathon Northrop, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer So its February 5th and pitchers and catchers report in less than two weeks. Let's take stock of Perry's moves and where the Angels might go from here. Perry's made no major acquisitions - no starting pitchers, no positions players, only bench and bullpen guys. The team as it stands looks to be something like this (with likely 26-man roster in bold and potential first call-ups in parentheses): C - O'Hoppe, Thaiss (Mejia, Wallach)

Ballin' on a Budget: Under the Radar Free Agents to Consider

    By CartiHalos

As the Hot Stove slowly churns along, a lot of the attention is on the big names - Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery and Cody Bellinger, among others.  While these kinds of moves are where some teams make or break their seasons, there's a lot of players that go under the radar that eventually turn into major contributors.  A few that come to mind are Robbie Ray's 1 year, $8 Million deal in 2021 where he won the AL Cy Young award, or Dexter Fowler helping the Cubs win the 2016 World Series on an ide

The Angels must sell on Hunter Renfroe while he has value

    By ryanmfalla

The last two weeks in Angels land has seen the team run through an absurdly horrendous stretch in which they have dropped 12 of their last 16 in a schedule littered with struggling teams. I don't need to recount the specifics of this awful stretch as we've been properly immersed in the existentiality of it all, but given the circumstances there are pressing questions that need answers soon. A crossroads awaits where the Angels have to decide whether they will go all in on the hunt for playoffs o

Trevor Bauer’s Deal is Bad for Baseball and Demands a 60/40/20 Rule To Evaluate Contracts With Opt-Outs

    By AngelsWin.com

By David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer Quick! Let’s play a game. Which of these numbers is not like the other two: 40, 45, and 17. If you guessed 17, you’re a winner! If you also guessed that those numbers represent the reported annual salaries for Trevor Bauer is his pending 3-year deal with the Dodgers, you’d also be right. This deal is bad for baseball. It’s bad for baseball on many levels, and as such, if baseball had an effective commissioner, it should voided and rewo

The drastically different Bud Norris

On Thursday night, the Angels took the lead in the 8th inning after Kole Calhoun drilled his 2nd home run of the night, giving the Angels a narrow 2-1 lead entering the 9th inning. Angels manager Mike Scioscia threw a change up, bringing in Jose Alvarez not only to face the first batter but the first 5 batters of the inning. Alvarez faced 3 lefties in the inning, including Jason Castro, who singled home 2 go ahead runs to give the Twins the lead and eventually the win. Immediately, people questi

Setting the Record

All this talk about Albert Pujols and the records he’s setting got me thinking a little bit. Specifically, it got me wondering a little bit about which record I would want to set if I were a Major Leaguer. At first I thought about the homerun record, which for a variety of reasons would be quite an interesting record to set. Let’s face it—there’s nothing greater than hitting a homerun in a game. The sheer beauty of it is just something to behold. I never hit a homerun in a game where I played,

The significance of Mike Trout’s injury

Through 54 games in 2017, the Angels have managed to pull off a decent 26-28 record. Just consider how remarkable that is. Garrett Richards, Tyler Skaggs, Andrew Heaney, Nick Tropeano and Alex Meyer, the makings of a potential good starting rotation, are all on the disabled list. The injuries have hit the bullpen too, sending Cam Bedrosian, Huston Street and Andrew Bailey on the shelf for an extended period of time. The offense has significantly underperformed to the tune of a 93 wRC+ and ranks

Last Week in Angels Baseball: The “Oh F&%#, Mike Trout is Injured” Edition

By Glen McKee, angelswin.com Staff Writer A few things happened last week in Angels baseball.  None of them, none of them, has any importance compared to Mike Trout hurting his thumb and being removed from the game yesterday.  Try to imagine this time without Mike Trout for any significant time.  It’s like Disneyland without the rides and everything else that is Disneyland.  It’s like going to In-N-Out and getting a grilled cheese with no sauce.  It sucks!  Please, Mike Trout, don’t be out too

An optimistic view for the rest of 2017

The Angels weren’t a playoff team last year.  I know the popular excuse was simply injuries, but let’s be honest, even if Richards, Heaney, Tropeano and Skaggs were completely healthy, they still didn’t have the bullpen to hold a lead, nor the offense to make a lead stand.  They likely would’ve been a good team, but not a contender.  Injuries can do that.  But the Angels have experienced the very same setbacks this season, and are still hovering around .500, good enough for second place in a div

The Scioscia Era – Where did it go wrong?

by Nathan Trop, AngelsWin.com Columnist The Angels, once a perennial playoff contender and World Champions in 2002, are coming off their sixth season missing the playoffs in the last 7 years, the only playoff appearance being a division series sweep by eventual Champions, the Kansas City Royals.  For the last five years they have had the best player in baseball, payroll is as high as it has ever been, and yet outside of the 2014 season the teams have been average at best.  I thought I would loo

The importance of the 2017 MLB Draft for the Angels

The Major League Baseball Amateur Draft is the most complex draft among all the major american sports. The draft lasts 40 rounds, partially due to the necessity to fill out various minor league baseball rosters. Teams have allotted amounts of money to spend for each pick, so picking the best available talent in every single round isn’t a realistic option, although it’s a bit easier to pick the best available early on this year thanks to the new CBA agreement on slot values. The trickiest part of

Last Week in Angels Baseball: The “Meatloaf” Edition

By Glen McKee, angelswin.com Staff Writer Meatloaf, not the delicious food but the man pictured above (aka Michael Lee Aday, something I know without having to google it, please applaud) is famous for two things: his songs, and for having bitch tits in the movie Fight Club.  Hey, don’t blame me, that’s a quote.  As evidence: Anyway, Meat’s second- or third-most-famous song is “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad.”  That’s a good way to look at the results from the last week of Angels baseball.  Yeah,

That moment when you realize everything you knew about prospects was a lie…

I’ve made it a hobby of predicting the future, quite unsuccessfully.  I am not a prophet (at least, I don’t think I am), but I sure do like baseball.  I loved playing it, watching it, dissecting it.  It helped me maximize my limited skills as a player and has led to some side jobs on the scouting side of things.  With a new family, I don’t travel as much as I used to, which makes the use of milb.tv all the more important.  While it offers limited views, it helps with repeat exposure and allows m

The perennially great yet different Mike Trout

It’s 2017 and Mike Trout still remains very good at playing baseball. This is not a surprise. He has been great in every single full season he has had in the big leagues dating back to 2012. So far in 2017, Mike Trout is hitting .352/.450/.752 along with a 225 wRC+ that ranks 1st in baseball. Trout just homered in his 4th straight game and has the chance to homer in 5 straight games Tuesday, which would tie an Angels record(Bobby Bonds in 1977). He also led baseball with a 171 wRC+ last year. Tr

Eppler has changed the way we view relievers

Admit it, you never thought we’d be here.  An Angels bullpen, one of the best in baseball?  The Angels’ relief pitching has been somewhere between “ok” and “terrible” for several years now, and coming into the year, I was among those who felt the bullpen would be absolutely horrendous in 2017.  But that was the old me.  The one that that bullpen roles should be fairly structured, that receivers needed to throw 94+ with a wipeout slider and grown from the minor leagues.  That’s what bullpens have

Last Week in Angels Baseball: The “Assumption of Mediocrity” Edition

By Glen McKee, Staff Writer Last week was, by definition, another mediocre week.  Mediocre: of only ordinary or moderate quality; neither good nor bad; barely adequate.  There were some things to get excited about, some things to be bummed about, but on the whole, the week was a giant slice of meh.  The team.  The Angels went 3-4 against two teams that are on the same level as them.  Mediocre!  Mike Trout too a couple of days off with a tight hamstring, and while we were crapping our pants wor

Chasing Upside

The draft is a little less than month away, and Billy Eppler has been universally applauded for his work on the Angels minor league system to date.  His predecessor, Jerry Dipoto’s drafting, international approach, free agency and general team building philosophy left the Angels system completely bare.  We’re talking about a General Manager that managed to trade away Jordan Walden, Andrew Romine, Tyler Chatwood, Will Smith, John Hellweg, Ariel Pena, Alexi Amarista, Taylor Lindsey, Jose Rondon, D

Angels Minor League Update 5/13

The minor league baseball season is now far enough in that we can start making some impressions of certain minor league performances, good or bad. The Angels farm system has shown incremental improvements since Billy Eppler was brought on board as general manager. There’s still a big shortage of talent throughout the system but there are finally signs of potential MLB players starting to surface across different levels. Here is an update on the 4 affiliates that are 30+ games into their season(R

Angels still have more than enough pitching depth

The Angels don’t look so hot lately.  It seems that late game magic is still here, because they’re still making comebacks, but they’re also finding ways to cough up that comeback lead.  And with the injuries they’ve encountered, the Angels will need some help from their prospects again this year, namely, their pitching prospects.  First, let’s start with who has been promoted. RHP Keynan Middleton (#6 prospect) – This is one I think everyone and their grandma saw coming a mile away.  Middleton

Return of the Point/Counterpoint Mailbox! Huzzah!

By Nate (Statler) Trop and Glen (Waldorf) McKee, Staff Writers Hey folks, guess what?  It’s early May and the Angels are once again mired in mediocracy, mostly due to injuries.  We’re still in second place in the AL West though!  Today is a day game against the As, sure to feature another wacky Scioscia getaway-day lineup, so what better time to answer your imaginary questions?  Let’s get to it! 66ers lose series opener against Visalia

The Inland Empire 66ers and Visalia Rawhide kicked off their 3 game series on on a cold Tuesday night as Visalia claimed the 1st game of the series. After splitting the series in Rancho Cucamonga, the 66ers had a chance to move into sole possession of 2nd place with a win but they were unable to do so, despite another strong outing from Jaime Barria. The Rawhide shutout Inland Empire 4-0 thanks to some strong pitching and timely hitting. “We’re fine right now,” said Inland Empire 66ers manager

The tragic downfall of Albert Pujols

Albert Pujols is 5 home runs away from reaching the prestigious 600 home run mark, a number only 8 other players in MLB history have reached. His 3,000th hit is in sight to be reached possibly next season. It should be a time for celebration for Albert Pujols and the illustrious Hall of Fame numbers he’s accumulated. Yet, there is still a huge feeling of dissatisfaction among the Angels fan base and, presumably, the Angels organization. The feeling of wanting just a bit more from “The Machine” h

Last Week in Angels Baseball – The “Fine Line” Edition

By Glen McKee, Staff Writer Baseball is a game of lines: stat lines, foul lines, lines for the bathroom at the stadium if you’re a woman.  Some of the lines are very fine, and no exception to that is my line for if the Angels had a good week.  For last week, it came down to one game.  One game made the difference between having a good week and a bad week.  It was actually two games, the two losses to Houston.  Had the Angels won either of those (and they could have) it would have been a good we

The life of a baseball “stringer”

The development of tracking baseball on applications, such as MLB Gameday, for phones and computers would not be possible if not for particular people who attend each game. With the upbringing of Pitch/FX, Trackman and Statcast, the need for able workers to track each pitch and play has been a necessity to keep baseball up to date with informing its’ fans. Some of these workers are known as stringers, who are now not only tracking Major League Baseball but Minor League Baseball and even some Col
