Since 2008, Santana has had the best slider in MLB while also having the worst fastball. (Fangraphs Pitch Values: Fastball -76.9 , Slider +67.9).

This season he's throwing his fastball at a career low rate of 50.9% while throwing his slider at near career high rate 38.1% (38.2% in 2011). Just shocking that he would see improvement by throwing his best pitch more often instead of grooving those awful straight 4 seam fastballs. He's also added a 2-seam fastball this year which has likely improved the effectiveness of the 4 seamer.

Have you ever heard Butcher say anything intelligent or insightful? I haven't. I used to listen closely to Black, Lachemann and Coleman because they almost always said something really smart. From Butcher we get simple explanations that could be recited by any fan while including prickish denials like "I know how good I am" and "I'll sleep like a baby". I wouldn't care how prickish he was if he was effective. He's not.

The next young pitcher to flourish under Butcher will be the first. It's possible that in 7 years there just hasn't been any young talent for him to work with. It's also possible that he's not a very good teacher and should be replaced. Tampa had no problem allowing him to leave to a lateral position with another team while also requiring no compensation.

Yeah, It's not uncommon to see diesel farm tractors from the 40's and 50's still chugging along after tens of thousands of hours. There is actually some demand in other countries for those mid 80's mazda trucks with a small diesel engine. Diesel has about 30% more energy per gallon than gas which accounts for most of the mpg gain but they are also clean now. I'm all for using hybrid/electric technology but the prospect of buying a whole new battery bank every few years isn't appealing.

Yep, and the higher the tension in the valve springs the quicker the valves will close. That's why racing engines can redline at much higher RPMs than normal engines. I think a honda s2000 has a 8000 rpm redline. NASCAR engines can achieve 10,000 RPM despite their huge size. The penalty for high tension valve springs is that they require more force (and friction) from the camshaft to open. That energy (thousands of times a minute) is lost and never reaches the road.

More simply, the valves must be closed by the time the spark plug fires and ignites the fuel/air mix. Otherwise bad things happen to the engine.

F1 engines can achieve 20,000 RPM but they replace the mechanical valve spring with a pneumatic (compressed nitrogen) spring. Not feasible for daily drivers.

The advancement here is that the actuators (electromagnets) are probably very strong. The strength of an electromagnet (which would determine how fast a valve could be closed) depends on how much electrical current can be pushed through it. 

Voltage = Current X Resistence    (ohms law)

To increase the current you either reduce the resistance of the coil wire (ie junk yard magnets use thick copper wire coils) or you increase the voltage very high. You can't lower the Resistence in a small actuator so they probably go the high Voltage route. High speed mosfets (used as electrical switches here) are a lot better than they were a decade ago. Maybe they are also using some of the newer niobium electromagnets.

If the video is true that these actuators can go to 20,000 RPM that would allow for very small yet powerful engines. Valve timing is another way to gain efficiency. Honda first had variable valve timing with their Vtech in the early 90's but it is still mechanical and not as easily optimized as purely electrical timing.

You can already buy a 67 MPG (80MPG in imperial units) Ford Focus turbo diesel in Europe. Not here though. I think they would be big sellers but the best we can get is probably the VW TDI (passat, golf, jetta). Haren has been atrocious for Wash. (5.70 ERA). Picking up his option at $15.5M would have been dumb.

Hunter started hot but had a .655 OPS in May and a .494 OPS so far in June. Two more home runs on the season than Reggie Willits. He will likely turn it around some but $26M isn't cheap either.

Both Vargas and Morales have been good but the Angels needed pitching more than another DH type. Especially if those at-bats came at the expense of Trumbo. Good trade.

None of those moves absolve the terrible Hamilton signing.

Hudler went to the Dick Vitale School for Asskissing and Namedropping. It's very uncomfortable to have to listen to a grown man talk that way. I liked his enthusiasm for the game though.

Both spouted the company line at all times. Neither seemed very prepared or insightful. Rojas is a 1000X better than Phys. Gooby doesn't bother me much.
