Yeah, Mayers is not going to be non-tendered. He didn't have as good of a year as his stretch in 2020 was, but he was still solid.

They have a lot of young guys, but you can't rely on them. But Bullpen is unreliable.

    I'd resign Iglesias to 4/60.

    9/14/15/16 with a 3M buyout of a 5th year option / or a 17M team option and a 3M signing bonus.

    I'd resign Cishek to 2 years, 3M contract. 1.25 M in 2022, 1.75 M in 2023. I'd sign Watson to the same deal if he'd take it.

I'd sign Richards/ Lorenzen to one year flyers or minors deals. Or I'd sign Yusmiero Petit to 2 year deal at 4M. Or Blake Parker.

I'd end up with a BP of Iglesias, Mayers, Watson, Cishek, Petit/Parker, with Warren, Quijada, and Herget rounding out the pen. Ortega, Richards or Lorenzen can have final spot.

It's not the best BP, but it will cost you around $9+$1.75+$1.75+$2M+2M = $16M for Pen.

All things given it is not wise to sign relief pitchers for more than one year with the caveat, established quality relievers can sign for up to three years. For TOR starters I wouldn’t give them more than 3-4 years depending on their age and injury history.

Lets play a game, we have 7 starters looking to fill a six men rotation for next year.

    The list of seven starters;

    1. Othani

    2. Sandoval

    3. Barria

    4. Suarez

    5. Canning

    6. Detmers

    7.Rodriguez

    Numerous Bullpen arms in play as well;

    1. warren

    2. marte

    3. Oretga

    4. Criswell

    5. Tyler

    Lastly, we have 40 Mil.

How would you structure your Rotation, Bullpen and any free agents for next season?

First, I would scrap the six man rotation. No team has won using the six man option. To that endI would like to see Ohtani, FA with TOR stuff, Sandoval, Rodriguez and Suarez or Detmers. That means that Barria goes to the pen with Warren, Marte, Criswell, Iglesias and FAs for the other spots. I would try to extend Iglesias for two years as closer. Sign a solid pitcher for the eighth inning. The Angels don’t have to spend all the money in the offseason. They are going to need a huge amount for Ohtani.

    Mayfield-bring up Stefanic

    Quintana- Criswell

    Guerra-Marte

    Suzuki-Thaiss

I would dump Quintana, Guerra, Slegers. Also from the 40 man roster I would release Thaiss, he has shown no ability to hit at the MLB level, he will be a career Minor Leaguer. I don’t see Rengifo as a regular at the top level. He, like Thaiss has shown little ability to hit at the big league level and his defense is suspect. The system is flush with middle infielders so Rengifo would not be missed. I would give Stepfanic a chance to show where he is at right now. He could be a low cost option as a utility player.
Bring up two arms who could possibly help in the bullpen next season. Once again, this offseason will be an exercise in finding lottery tickets for the pen on the cheap and possibly signing an ace to a short term contract of two or three years tops (Scherzer or Verlander). They should try to extend both Iglesias’s and hope that Paris or Vera is ready to play SS in two years. If the universal DH goes into effect in 2022 then try to get something for Upton by paying most of his pay for his last year.
The 2022 season will be another tough one for the Angels, who have to be saving room on a long term contract for Ohtani ( hopefully not for more than five years).

If the Angels were going to tank, why didn't the team trade away anyone of value?

The only ones tanking are Minasian and Maddon.
    Bundy should be dumped

Suzuki should also be dumped to give Ward some reps behind the plate

Barria should be in the rotation. The rotation should be:

Ohtani, Sandoval, Suarez, Detmers, Rodriguez, Cobb (when he returns), Barria-until Cobb comes back.

It is unfortunate that there are no relievers to call up to replace Quintana and Bundy, Mayers and the rest of the Fire Squad.

The team obviously isn’t going to win too many games the rest of the season so play the youngsters to get a feel for what to expect for ‘22.

    The rotation should be:

    Ohtani

    Sandoval

    Barria,

    Suarez

    Rodriguez

    Detmers

Keep Quintana and Bundy around to take a beating and to give the kids a rest. It is a shame that there aren’t and young pen arms to bring up.

    I just don’t get it.

    The prognosis was 6-8 weeks.

It’s been going on NINE weeks.

What is it with this particular injury that is stretching out the recovery so much?

Google Calf injuries and you will see that it is an extremely slow area to heal especially for athletes. Trout is a world class athlete so imagine how long it would take one of us to heal.
Trout’s injuries are not chronic so I don’t think he is necessarily injury prone especially this season. Injuries are everywhere in MLB this season, Trout was not more or less susceptible to injury than any other players who compete as hard as he does.

    They’re 9-10.

Just toss out the bad ones and move on to the next day. They have 143 games left.

Jeff, why is Pena not back with the team yet? He was one of the best relievers last season and is reportedly healthy. Meanwhile, we see Junior Guerra get lit up whenever he takes the mound.
Until this organization can draft and develop pitching the mediocre to poor seasons will continue.
I also don’t think the six man rotation works, too much time between starts to be consistent. It also means fewer starts for Bundy, Cobb and Heaney. I agree that Canning needs to go down and work on his fastball command. Bring back Barria and Sandoval then DFA Guerra.

  7. Fletcher

    Ohtani

    Trout

    Walsh

    Rendon

    Upton

    Ward

    Stassi

    Iglesias

    Bundy

    Heaney

    Cobb

    Sandoval

    Detmers

Ohtani- if he can avoid injury

    Mayers

    Cishek

    Watson

    Rodriguez

    Slegers

    Guerra

    Rodriguez

    Iglesias

Keep Quintana far away from the mound and the “Tin Man” Pujols away from the lineup. Minasian, we need more starters.

  8. Bullpens are a crapshoot especially when you have mostly crap back there. Sandoval is a starter, Barria is a starter, Guerra is a DFA All-Star. Buttrey has no command of his fastball and when he does throw it over the plate it gets hammered. Mayers has a small sample size of success and Slegers needs to stay healthy. I like Raisel but I am afraid that he won’t get enough work.
Success for the Angels will lie with the offense.

In the 90's it was difficult to watch the Angels play because most games weren't televised. Then in the 2000's all the games were televised! Now here in the 2020's all the games are televised but apparently no one wants to carry the channel the games are televised on...

This could become a real problem actually.

Get the MLB Season ticket. I live in Wisconsin and I see every Angels game along with all the other games except the Brewers.

Angels are a much deeper team. Not much better at front of rotation, but deeper on rotation and outfield should injuries happen.

Would be nice to see them add one of Odorizzi, Paxton, Walker or Rosenthal.

Overall I'm excited to get the season going and watch Detmers, Adell, Marsh, Lagares and Rivera show what they can during Spring Training.

    Crazy talent with those names

What can Lagares show that will be different than the rest of his career? He would have to beat out Ward for a bench spot. Considering that Arte appears to have cut off spending, Lagares cost way more than Ward with defense as his primary worth. The Angels have better alternatives than Lagares namely Marsh and Adell.

As for Minasian being done, I give him a D for his first foray into an offseason as GM. Acquiring Cobb was absurd when considering what was available at the time, same goes for Fowler. The Iglesias deals were very good and Quintana is a good innings eater. He has failed to add another late innings reliever and the rotation is still a huge question mark. The bench pieces he has added all belong in a Senior’s home.

With all that said, ST starts in just five days and I can’t wait. I hope I am wrong and the acquisitions all work out. I desperately want the Halos to win.

  11. I am now convinced that Minasian doesn’t know what he is doing. Cobb and Fowler acquisitions are inexplicable. There were better players available in FA for less money. There will be better players available on waivers during or before ST starts in two weeks.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

  12. Signing Bauer for seven years would be a huge mistake. He has had one excellent season plus 11 starts in 2020 against the weak Central Divisions. There is no easy fix for the Angels’ pitching staff, especially when it comes to starters. Let’s hope that Detmers and Rodriguez develop into solid starters. After that  hope that better instructors can develop pitching on a yearly basis. This is the only way to sustain a perennial winner.

I would like to see the club sign another potential closer and one starter.

If you have a legitimate opportunity to acquire BOTH Gray AND Castillo without buttfucking your farm system, you absolutely cannot pass up on that.

If money is the only thing standing in the way of that happening, then Arte needs to take out his checkbook, and then his balls, place them both gently on his desk in front of Minasian, look him dead in the eye and stoicly say "Get me a ring".

Unfortunately there's no precedent for Arte doing that, so we have to assume he's not going over the tax threshold, making this a fantasy discussion.

Cincinnati would be foolish to include Gray and Castillo in the same deal. Castillo will take a boatload of prospects and MLB ready players. Gray will still cost at least two top 10-15 prospects. There are any number of teams who would be in on both. The chances of acquiring one is low at best.
