My god... is there some real reason why they keep trotting this guy out there? I'd almost rather see Jerome pitch on two days rest.

The Angels have never won more than 79 games in seasons ending in 3.
1963 won 70 games
1973 won 79 games
1983 won 70 games
1993 won 71 games
2003 won 77 games
2013 Angels are on pace to win 70 games.
Great stat! Given that, when 2023 rolls around I'll definitely be keeping my expecations in check and will expect a certain degree of absolute sucktitude throughout the season.

Not that there aren't a litany of other problems to address all over the place at this point, but this team will never sniff another post-season so long as Scioscia is managing. It's just that simple. I've been absolutely convinced of that since last season. He had a nice run but that's over. It's time to move on and try to turn this thing around for next season... no reason not to start with him.
Not sure I advocate doing anything at this point in the season (though I'm not necessarily against it, either), but if he's managing the team next season there's no reason to believe that what we've seen each of the last two seasons won't continue.

He should! It was a mistake not to have re-signed him. Knew it then.

I'm not falling for this. I'm hopeful, but refuse to believe or read much into a modest 4-game win streak (the Halos 1st this season). Gonna have to rip off a lot more than that to reel me back in.

Very Jon Lovitz as Gary Fogel in Seinfeld
This was exactly my thought, as well.

'Bout sums it up...

Good loss?? Gave up 9 runs, are now 11 games back and it's only the middle of May....and I think it's gonna get far, far worse before it gets any better! There's no way you can be saying this with a straight face.

Nothing wrong with being positive and maintaining hope, but how come you don't see these "feel-good" type threads after 3-0, 1-hit games or 11-4 drubbings like Monday's game was?
-
I don't get the sense that there's any impending *catching fire* going to take place with this team.. not really sure why anyone else would either. Three nights ago the team was blanked in Chicago (had 1 hit) and then lost by 7 to kick off a 9-game homestand. There's nothing wrong with being hopeful, but this team needs to string some wins together and/or start winning some series and I'm not sure they're there.
Barring that, they're not even gonna come close to making up 9 games and being .500 come June 1st.

It has nothing to do with his weight.
He sees guys not even trying getting paid (almost) 100x what he is and therefore has no reason to sacrifice his young talent or abilities for the rest of them.
Can't say I blame him.
There's probably a lot more truth to this than what many want to admit. The blase mentality and overall lack of intensity that's (seems to be) permeating around this team seems to be contagious.

I don't think a trade can be judged entirely at the time it is made. You do have to look a few years down the line. In the case of the greinke trade, it could go down as a colossal mistake, and dipoto probably deserves criticism for it.
Why would anyone need to look a few years down the line in this particular case to determine the results? Grieinke isn't in an Angel's uniform any longer.
-
I thought we were all in agreement that this team sucks too much to make the playoffs.
I know I'm certainly convinced.
-
Trading Hamilton would surely see him start putting up MVP-type numbers again while Wells in Anaheim, well, we read that script for years. There seems to be something about being in an Angel's uniform that (unfortunately) pretty much assures under-performing and suckage if you're a high-priced acquisition.
-
I am sure if this team was healthy the record would be the opposite 22-14 instead of 14-22.
Umm, yeah. You keep telling yourself that.

I didn't allow myself to be duped last year when they righted the ship only to fall short during the month of September, and that was a better team. I sure as hell ain't gonna be duped by by this group. There's nothing wrong with supporting the team, hoping they'll be successful and turn things around, but If people didn't learn their lessons after last season, well, that's on them...
-
Actually, with the product we're seeing on the field and the mounting "L's", I find it easy to not really care. Went through all this last season, so it was a no-brainer to check out early this season.

In three years the division will be a three way race between the Rangres, the Astros and the A's with Angels anchoring the cellar.
3 years?? We're beginning to see it right now!
-
Not a former Angel, but anyone think Tony Gwynn might potentially be interested or a candidate?
-
Great question. Something along the lines of throwing shit on a wall and seeing what sticks.
This made me LOL, literally..... cause it certainly seems true.

"You are what your record says you are."

Right now, the Angels are inferior to both the Rangers and A's in the only real measurable we have: the scoreboard. Last season the Angels finished third in the division due to the bullpen squandering leads, if only half of those had occurred the Angels would have won the division. This season right away they are way back in the standings for the same reason.
To think that is going to turn around after the trend of the past couple seasons is noble and all, but it doesn't make much sense. We have every reason to doubt whether the pen can get it turned around. I hope they do, or this season is going to be lost.
Right now, with the exception of Miami and (maybe) San Diego, the Angels are inferior to every other team in baseball record-wise. They, in fact, may be worse than the record indicates. Right now I think there's a real possibility that Houston leaves Anaheim the same way Oakland did.

people shouldn't fret over small sample sizes. the angels aren't this bad and the a's aren't this good. i mean half the a's lineup have wrc+ of 200 or higher for crying out loud. that's the definition of small sample size. the first couple of weeks for the 2011 red sox were pretty abysmal but they turned out to be pretty good.
Didn't the 2011 Red Sox have a meltdown to end the season and miss the playoffs? Given that they're still recovering 2 seasons later, that's probably not the best comparison.... not if the goal is to inspire hope.
Who should/will go?

Fourteen years is far too long for a manager and it's clear that Mike's run is over...has been for years. I don't care how much money he's due. Cut your loses, pay him off and begin the process of moving forward.
Doesn't matter who the GM is, doesn't matter what the payroll is, doesn't matter who's traded for or what free agents are signed in the off-season; if Scioscia is managing this team next season it'll assuredly be more of the same - only then we'll be looking at 5 straight seasons without a playoff appearance and there'll be no recourse but to fire him at that point anyway. Do it now and get on with it.
