The reason Howie won't make the All-Star team in 2013

While Howie is having maybe the best 1st half of a season he has had in his career, it is obvious that he is in the conversation to make the All-Star team. At most 3 second basemen will make the roster. Robinson Cano is a shoe-in. Even though his average is a little low for his standards, his 15 HRs, career accomplishments, and the fact he plays in New York mean he's in. Next is Pedroia who is having a great season to this point.

 

Next on the list should be Kendrick, without question. However, let's look closely. While Howie's numbers are better in almost every category, he won't get in over Jose Altuve. Houston has moved to the AL and will need a representative. Some will say Bud Norris could be their lone rep. But there are just too many good pitchers in the AL that deserve to make it over Norris.

The only position player that could possibly make the All-Star team for the Astros is Jason Castro. However, one could argue that 3 other catchers deserve to make it over him. Mauer, AJ, Carlos Santana, even Salvador Perez.

 

That leaves Altuve at 2B. Kicking Howie out of an All-Star appearance. I hope Howie gets in, he deserves it. But I have my doubts.

Maybe one of the guys is injured or elects not to play and Howie gets the nod.

No other league has that rule. It's a dumb rule. MLB keeps claiming to not mess with tradition, but they have interleague games every series now, two wild card teams in each league but they don't want to F with tradition.
