  1. This has always been the case from my standpoint but my concern was that the Angels would do something that doesn't best suit them. Someone will give him 1yr with an opt out and it shouldn't be us.
  2. Hence the reason he's not going to sign him.
  3. The actual truth probably changes everyday. By the hour even. All of the things that have been said could easily have been accurate at some point. the hot stove is a fickle mistress (I've been looking for a spot to drop that in. Probably a little forced.)
  4. it doesn't always make sense. we see teams extend themselves for short periods. I think it tells us that there's more money and magical accounting in there than we are even remotely privy to.
  5. I know people have info to the contrary and we'll probably sign him right as I post this but I just don't see us getting Snell.
  6. I would much rather have Lorenzen and Davis on 1yr deal than Snell on an opt out deal and loss of a pick.
  7. The big nit is that he's pretty terrible defensively at 3b and in the OF. From a versatility standpoint though he's a pretty ideal fit - especially this late in the game. I don't think people realize how big of an upgrade a 2 WIN position player is for this team right now.
  8. NBA and NFL seem to have a fairly appropriate structure for free agents and newbies. Baseball is such a different dynamic though with the sheer number of players and necessary development structure. And the sheer volume of games. To me, the first step in all of this is incorporating intl players into the draft and probably more importantly, a free market for trading draft picks. I think that would change the entire economic landscape of baseball.
  9. there's a point where a lack of a proper spring impacts the economics of any deal for these players. are we confident that Snell and Montgomery are going to be as good as expected in the first year? theoretically it might pull a couple starts out but preparing for the season while actually in season is much different than getting your reps in from the beginning. It could affect the entire year.
  10. how about just not being very good and having a bad stretch.
  11. I hope Neto, Rengifo and Drury can each play 162 games.
  12. Maybe it's just me because I'm looking for it, but I feel like guys are pitching off their fastball a lot more than what I saw last year. Granted, could be that it's what they do in spring but it felt like the fastball was a secondary pitch last year.
  13. curious what his pitch mix is going to be outside of the FB and the slider. There was supposedly a sinker which is really just a fastball in his case.
  14. Since Arte doesn't really do the opt out thing, I don't see us signing any one of the remaining top guys. They're all likely in short term, high aav, opt out contract territory this late in the game. Usually Boras gets a couple teams to bite on something close to what would be considered near his target comp for these guys. Surprising it's been complete crickets. While I don't disagree that it's ultimately on the player to make a decision, the fact that they're all still out there except bellinger tells me that he misjudged the market. 1 or 2 guys still left? fine. But I think a decent chunk of this one is on the agent.
  15. I'm not sure their history should have any bearing on whether it makes sense for them to throw big money at a pitcher starting his age 31yo season. Of course he's a clear upgrade. But is he a 10 WAR upgrade? And if the team isn't all that good this year and doesn't show as much promise as we hope? Then we're stuck with Snell. I get that you're bored with our off season. It was pretty underwhelming, but considering the FA market and the current status of the team, it was fairly appropriate. I can get on board with anyone who's left for a 1-2 yr deal. Even for a high AAV. That would be ideal in my view.
  16. Can't really agree with this. To me, it's just a waste of current and future dollars to add a 5 year contract of 25-30m per to a team that is probably a .500 club just in case the young guys show something for next year. I'd rather wait to make sure. And that doesn't mean you shouldn't spend. They absolutely should. And I agree it shouldn't be on guys where you're trying to catch lightning. Especially when you need to catch it 3 times in one season. Try to get one premium player on a 1yr deal. Someone who's got a good chance of actually having value at the deadline or at least a comp pick in the future. The problem with Snell is that if the young guys don't perform or take longer than expected, you're into his age 33 season before he could actually make a difference. In the meantime, you could have turned over two other players for prospects. Being unrealistic about their chances is how you end up holding your junk like with Rendon. Or even someone like Simmons. Great trade. Awesome value. And it ended up getting wasted because your complimentary pieces were Johnny G, Rafael Ortega, Daniel Nava, Jhoulys Chacin, Ricky Nolasco, Alex Meyer, Danny Espinosa, Ben Revere, Cam Maybin, JC Ramirez, Parker Bridwell, and a slew of other waiver pickups and premature callups. If I could go back and do one thing it would be to change the way they danced between the type of players they added in the offseason and how they parlayed that into future value. All those opportunities over the years. Two of the times they did it right are guys now slated to be a big part of this years team (Rengifo and Sandoval). What if they had done a better job in this area two more times over the last decade? Add two more solid or even very good players to this team that are club controlled. Take Anderson's and Rendon's money and put it to better use for a second. I know I'll probably get called out for hindsight, but I've been preaching this approach for years.
