Let’s play a fun game, let’s pick out those in this thread that thought Ty Buttrey retired because he had accomplished all he ever wanted to in baseball and wanted to move on to fantastic new things and not because he’s been demoted. OK, go!

He has openly said he doesn’t like baseball. He has openly said the season is too long. He’s been a dick to the local media (who have been very tolerant of him), he’s physically assaulted fans. He has the ability to play baseball at a fantastic level. But he’s admitted he doesn’t look at it as anything more than a job. He’s 33 and at that age you’d hope he’d have that realization of how blessed and lucky he is to have been given the chance in life to make millions of dollars doing something fun (versus beating his body up doing construction or sitting in an cubicle or flipping burgers for pennies). Forgive me if I’m skeptical or think he’s got his mind on family trips and fishing this summer now that he’s had his requisite early season soft tissue injury that will keep him out for a surprising amount of time.

He’s probably so stoked right now.

I say give them the most. Let’s motivate these leeches to work hard and be successful. Otherwise we’re just rewarding failures like you.

My assumption is he hasn’t sued MLB because he’s still hoping to get a job in MLB. Ultimately he may sue them. I don’t do labor law, but his status as being a union member and also the antitrust exemption may ultimately play a role here. But maybe not, I’m just kind of spitballing.

At this point he might as well. Pitch a few years over there, make as much as he can and return to the US and retire with a decent nest egg. It really doesn’t look like we will even see if he can still be successful in the MLB. At worst his will be a cautionary tale for young, dumb, arrogant players to be careful about who you keep company with.
