Yep, great baseball strategist. Loved his 80's Cardinal teams, emphasizing speed and defense.
Fun brand of baseball to watch.

We don't actually know if that is a "strength" yet, though.  Have Detmers, Neto, and Schanuel (as well as Silseth and Mederos) gotten to the majors quickly?  Absolutely.  Do we know yet how strong any of them will be overall?  Not really.  Detmers is close to truly establishing himself, but I think the jury is still out on the others.  Of course, that's natural, since they're all recent draftees.  But I think it'll be another 2-3 years before we know for sure if the strategy is a good one.

I’m not. If they want to save some money for a HS pitcher later, as you suggested, then do it with the 2nd round and comp picks.
IMO, there’s a clear cut off in talent after 8-10. So lock in one of those top talents, then you can start playing around with your bonus pool.

A real savvy baseball mind. Led some Cardinal teams further than many expected. Also one of the first baseball cards I found in a Topps pack when I was a kid. I recall he had a crewcut and a big wad of chewing tobacco bulging from his cheek. I actually have his autograph on a piece of paper, also signed by Roger Maris, who was a close lifelong friend. I think they both played for the old Kansas City A's early in their careers. The Maris auto is part of a display I have along with the entire 1961 Yankees team. My favorite team as a small kid, but who I despised since Steinbrenner.

I remember that.  He wanted to get Bobby Bonilla and Danny Tartabull, but they signed elsewhere so he ended up signing Brooks and trading for Hayes.

Probably the second biggest mistake this franchise has made was to let Herzog get away.  The number one mistake was trying to replace Nolan Ryan with two 8-7 pitchers.

There were others as well. Whitey got Sixto Lezcano from Milwaukee in the winter of 1980 then dealt Lezcano, Templeton and a ptbnl to San Diego for Smith, Steve Mura and a ptbnl in the Winter of 1981.
The Milwaukee trade was big as they got Rollie Fingers, Ted Simmons and Pete Vuckovich who beat us in the playoffs in 1982...

The amount of complete games Blylevan pitched is staggering. The amount he lost was just as staggering.

Bauer asks, at what point does he get to go back to work and make a living? I guess he needs to read up on the McCarthy era and blacklisting in the entertainment industry. As long as there is support for unsubstantiated claims, ignoring legal rights of the accused, Bauer isn't getting back on a MLB field until an Old Timers game.
