  1. So who would you choose? Oh by the way Player A is 3 years older than Player B. Answer posted tomorrow (if any of you guess who these players are please keep it to yourselves until people have had a chance to vote).
  2. Although I agree wins aren't a useful measurement tool, Scherzer clearly is a front runner in a very narrow group that would include Darvish. I am not sure why you are upset about his placement? Also there is still time left in the season. Scherzer or Darvish could get blown up like Hernandez did today. All three have done very well this season.
  3. Some other names that jump out at me, from other clubs, are Baez, Bryant, Vizcaino, Purke, Almora, and Soler. Lot of good talented players on that team. Something about letting sleeping dogs lie comes to mind.
  4. This won't happen. We don't have the payroll space to sign Cano, period. We have other options to replace Kendrick. I mean rationally Cano will want a 7 yr.+/$200 million contract, correct? He is on the wrong side of 30 as well. I just don't see any logic in why Arte and whether it's Jerry or someone else would want to take on such a burden to an already taxed payroll? It would really hamstring our budget moving forward and just doesn't seem even remotely possible in my view. Moreno would have to authorize a massive increase in budget and Cano is just getting too old and we would regret ever investing $200 million in someone like him. It would also make signing Trout long-term even more difficult.
  5. That's a possibility too. Perhaps Don fits the mold of the type of manager that Dipoto feels is a better fit for the team? If it came to pass would it be the first manager swap in MLB history?!?
  6. You are absolutely correct about the history of managers being traded, it doesn't happen often. I think Mike is one of those types that could be traded and I don't think they would just throw the money away when there are teams that would want him. Could easily go either way. If Mattingly makes it to the World Series he will probably be safe for sure. Anything short of that (especially an early playoff exit) might force the Dodgers to revisit their pre-July plans. Generally I agree that managers don't usually bring back much in prospects. If it did go down I'd expect to see Kendrick, Scioscia, and possibly one or two more prospects being exchanged for Zach Lee and one of Kenley Jansen or Paco Rodriguez at the minimum. If the Dodgers took on more or even all of Scioscia's salary then the haul might be less I suppose. We will see what happens. Lots of things could change the entire landscape before the season is over. I mean no one thought the Dodgers would play .800 ball from late June and on did they? Things can flip on a dime.
  7. I understand what you are trying to say Hamiltown, but in late June all of the Dodger talk was mainly about the fact that Don Mattingly was about to be fired due to the teams poor performance. It is my thought and assumption, based on news reports, that the Dodgers began looking for a replacement manager as they certainly believed that Mattingly wasn't getting it done. It was exactly at that time (late June) that the Dodgers went on a massive win streak. I think the Dodgers continued to discuss dumping Mattingly but, as the wins piled up towards the end of July, they realized a) they probably shouldn't fire Mattingly during such a critical win streak and because they were winning the urgency to make a trade for Kendrick subsided a bit and they probably decided to revisit that trade after the season is over (when they will still need a 2B for 2014). I agree that Grant Green is not Howie Kendrick. I never implied that he was. What I will say is that between a platoon of say Green and Lindsey for instance, you could replicate about 80% or more of Kendrick's overall performance. The point is that Kendrick has value and can bring back a starting pitcher whether it is Zach Lee or some other one available to us and we do have in house options to replace some of the production that we would lose if Kendrick were gone. You may be right about some of the fans regarding their understanding of Scioscia's history with the Dodgers. However I think the Dodgers ownership would look at acquiring Mike as a bit of a marketing opportunity to remind the fan base of their long and storied history (bobbleheads, anniversary years of World Series wins, blah, blah, blah). Something about one man's junk is another man's treasure.... Thanks for the conversation and talk about the article HT.
  8. Fair enough Rams, I think we value Kendrick a little differently. Prospects are never a promise of anything and Seager is still in the low Minors so he is still far off in terms of any impact and could just as easily flame out. The real value comes from Lee and whichever reliever it is and I think Kendrick's value is a known commodity versus the unknown in Lee. Picking up a reliever in addition to Lee, for Kendrick, makes some sense depending upon who it is and when you add Scioscia into the equation (and any possible salary absorption by either side) it seems perfectly reasonable to acquire a Rodriguez or even Jansen (a little less likely for sure) along with one or two A ball prospects. I don't think Mike will get fired to be honest. He will either be traded or kept.
  9. The gist of the article was geared towards examining 1) the idea that Mike is a tradeable asset, 2) that other teams would value him at varying prices, 3) the Dodgers, out of all of the suitors, actually make a lot of sense in terms of trade opportunity and value, 4) this potential trade, if it ever happens, would, due to the Dodgers surge in July, happen in the off season, 5) Mike's player history with the Dodgers and the probability that they would love to bring him into the fold as their manager, even at the expense of Don Mattingly, and 6) the pieces exchanged would be good fits for both teams with the Dodgers picking up a quality 2B and Manager while the Angels would receive a young starting pitcher and reliever for use next season.
  10. As I mentioned in my reply to Hamilton, now that the deadline has passed, this is really a possible off season move. Another thing to consider is that Scioscia has lived in Southern California for many years now and may not want to move to one of the destinations listed. It may also be that if (and we have no idea yet what Moreno has decided) Arte has decided to oust Mike, he may very well do it in as gracious a manner as he can, perhaps even going so far as to ask Mike where he would like to go if traded. Arte and Mike have a long standing relationship and it wouldn't surprise me if they handled it in as amicable a manner as possible taking Mike's wishes into account.
  11. My conjecture, if you read the article, was directed more at an off season move since the deadline came and went without a trade being completed, for the very reason I cited which was that the Dodgers had turned their season around and probably didn't want to make a managerial change in the middle of such a hot win streak. I think I was pretty clear about that statement. That leaves the off season where a lot could happen. Even the Dodgers would think twice about offering Cano a monster contract on top of the money they have already committed. Again Kendrick is a very viable option for them at a controlled price.
  12. You're right it is speculation. However to say there is no foundation for it is incorrect. 1) Moreno has made it clear he is evaluating all aspects of the organization leading into the off season which includes whether or not Mike Scioscia stays or goes. 2) Mike Scioscia is a former two-time World Series winner with his one and only team that he has every played professional baseball with, the Los Angeles Dodgers. There is certainly an argument to be made that there are historic and nostalgic memories that both Mike and the Dodgers organization share and treasure, making a potential reunion a welcome one. 3) One nationally respected sportswriter reported negotiations that were never finalized before the trade deadline between the two Los Angeles teams, the Angels and the Dodgers. which, although unexpected, make sense from a purely business perspective when you look at the needs of both teams (the Dodgers need a 2B and the Angels need a starting pitcher). 4) If Mike Scioscia were a free agent manager today, there would be multiple teams that would inquire about hiring him as a manager. Even with his large contract there are probably teams that would be willing to absorb part of his contract to acquire him based on his experience level as an MLB manager. From those 4 basic points above it is not unreasonable, based on the myriad of recent rumors regarding Scioscia, to believe that the Dodgers had some level of interest in Mike. If you don't see it that is fine but there is some foundation for it.
  13. Regarding the first part, that is fine. I didn't expect everyone to agree with my angle on this and I am not saying it is even a likely thing to happen but I think it is a possibility in play. The Kendrick talks did occur, per Rosenthal. As I mentioned in my reply to Rams, people around here don't really appreciate how much trade value Kendrick does have (see the reply to Rams for my reasoning). At the time the Dodgers were seriously discussing a Kendrick trade, their team was tanking and they were not getting tremendous production out of 2B, so to say that Kendrick can't help them is incorrect, he certainly could improve their team.
  14. Hi Rams, I think many here don't really appreciate Howie Kendrick's trade value. Two years of team control at a very reasonable salary is nothing to sneeze at. Let me put it another way: One-half season of Greinke was worth Jean Segura and two other prospects. To think two years of an above average 2B is any less seems illogical to me. Add in the fact that the Dodgers would like to have a manager like Scioscia and it is not unreasonable to believe that getting Zach Lee, Corey Seager, and ONE of either Jansen or Rodriguez, is a doable thing.
  15. With all due respect LT I'm not sure why you would accuse all national sportswriters of posting false information all of the time? I don't think they would keep their jobs long if that was the case. Your snarkiness is unappreciated too. Regarding the last sentence that is perfectly fine. I feel differently about it. Is it likely to happen? Probably the answer is no. But is it a real possibility? Yes I think it is an option in play depending on how the Dodgers season ends up.
  16. Well the original title was just "Four True Outcomes" which is a refence to the baseball term "Three True Outcomes", which are a strikeout, walk, or home run. The title got something added after I sent it. As always everyone is welcome to their opinion. If the Angels are serious about Scioscia not being here then you have to consider the Dodgers a trade partner to move his salary, it's that simple. Whether it is likely or not all depends on what Arte does with Mike, right? Ideally Arte won't want to just dump Mike's salary? Rosenthal reported those trade discussions (link is in the article). You can doubt that all you want but Ken doesn't go out of his way to report things that aren't vetted and sourced so I would disagree with you readily about that remark.
  17. Regarding your first sentence, the Dodgers excellent record is probably the main reason why Mattingly didn't lose his job in mid-July. Despite your opinion and hate for Scioscia there are many teams that would sign him in a heartbeat if he was available on the open market and that includes the Dodgers who would probably go out of their way to place him on a pedestal and announce to the world that their World Series hero has come home to manage their franchise. It may sound far-fetched to you Hamiltown but it is a reality you shouldn't ignore.
  18. Kendrick seems to definitely be in play. I don't think the Dodgers really want to spend lavishly on Cano and Kendrick represents a good, cost-controlled 2B for a lot of teams. If the Dodgers are willing to part with Zach Lee (and that has to be the minimum starting point) then I'm sure talks will continue into the off season about it. It really seems like the Dodgers, Rockies, Blue Jays, Royals, and Orioles are teams that would have significant interest in Kendrick at this time.
  19. As I mentioned in my original Kendrick article, I was concerned that the Angels won't do trades with the Dodgers because of a possible, perceived battle for the Los Angeles fan base. However, Rosenthal did clearly report that Kendrick was in play with the Dodgers so when it comes to business I think Dipoto looks past that issue and looks to see if the deal makes sense for both sides and would pull the trigger if that was the case. I think nothing short of a World Series visit saves Mattingly's job. He was about to be fired in early July before the team went on its massive win streak. And a large part of that has to do with the players themselves, performing, than the manager leading. That isn't necessarily a knock on Mattingly but you have to think the Dodgers were exploring their options in mid-June to replace him and Scioscia would be an ideal target for them whether or not Arte would even consider it or not. Three losing seasons in a row might convince Moreno otherwise. Like I said if Arte has decided Scioscia has got to go then this scenario is in play and the Dodgers are a prime trade candidate.
  20. Mainly I think they would pursue Seager because he is one of their top prospects and he would give us a choice of SS prospects moving forward. Rondon is obviously a possible future SS but we also thought Brandon Wood was a future 3B? Having additional options is important (depth). It also increases the likelihood that we trade Aybar before his contract is up if one of the two excels and forces their way onto the big league team. Otherwise one of them is a trade chip once Aybar's contract expires. Edit: Also Seager is a power-hitter while Rondon is more of an Aybar like player with a wider skill set. Two different beasts which would also allow us to select the one that best fits into our team composition if they both become MLB-ready.
