How can this article completely push aside merchandising profits, marketing and licensing agreements (video games, etc) and theme parks (a highly profitable division where two huge bets on Star Wars properties drive tons of traffic)?

All of that is part of the calculus that goes into this. 
 

That article is really long, super repetitive and completely ignores so much of the overall picture.
