eligrba got a reaction from Lou in Think about all the fun at this year's trade deadline
Those folks who "don't drink the Kool Aid" will be the same folks who would complain that the Angel did not get to the World Series if they made the playoffs, or complain that the Angels did not win the World Series if they made it to the World Series, or complain that the Angels didn't construct the team in a way to win multiple World Series if they did win a World Series, or complain about the increased ticket prices because of the success, or complain about band wagon fans who were not around during the rebuild,

I think this answers the "Why did the Angels trade for Max Stassi?" question. I am relieved I will no longer need to watch Lucroy misplaying a catch-able pitch.

Yep, and three years later people are trying to trade away all our assets for pitchers again. Thankfully the fans don't run the front office.

You just couldn't stay out if this one could you? You deserve to get @Lou'd.

eligrba reacted to arch stanton in Even IF we get Gerrit Cole...
The most successful teams recently have gone out and gotten established starters once the team was in place. Cubs with Lester, Arietta, Lackey, Hammell. Red Sox with Sale, Price, Porcello. Yankees are going through this year with Tanaka, Happ, Sabathia, Paxton. Astros with Verlander, Cole, Miley, now Greinke. Really only the Dodgers have their own draft picks at the top of the rotation or even as closer. This winter should be the time to shore up the staff and make the run

eligrba reacted to Stradling in Should Eppler have done something significant before the trade deadline?
Totally. This trade deadline turned some rational people into butthurt crazy people. We saw what Bauer was traded for, we saw what Greinke was traded for. Yet people are telling Eppler to get off his ass and do something. It makes zero sense to do something when the acquisition cost is so high.
So for us that wanted him to sell a few parts, obviously there wasn’t a market for what we had to offer. Why do I say obviously, well if there’s one thing Eppler proves by not making moves it’s that he values prospects and years of control. If there was a way to flip Kole or Lucroy or a reliever and get some prospects worth a damn that offers more of what he truly values common sense says he does it. He isn’t delusional and thinks they have a legit shot this year by making or not making a move.

eligrba reacted to ten ocho recon scout in Angels to Acquire Max Stassi for OFs Rainier Rivas, Raider Uceta
In all honesty, if that is true, ill take it.
Not like weve had some badass hitting catcher since Iannetta. But we also havent had some witch defender either.

Both of you should review the records for the Astros between 2004-2014. This narrative is such bullshit about "Champions like the Astros do this and the Angels don't."

I guess people should never believe their team has a chance at the beginning of the year?
People should believe in the Angels improving every year....it's called being a hopeful fan. This is not a problem......these are the folks who have wonderful family memories associated with baseball, some connected to victories and some to defeats. If you have a problem with people consistently believing that the Angels are a good team and are hopeful at the beginning of each year, maybe you should consider not reading those threads or staying connected to the Angels. Its only entertainment, nothing more.

Ohtani, Adell, Canning, Fletcher, Rengifo, Pena, Buttrey, Ramirez, Anderson...Trout’s extension.
We’ve had a lot more luck than people realize but it’s been overshadowed by the bad luck we have had, and it’s a reminder just how bad things really were when Eppler came in.
As was posted, the farm was historically bad. And the MLB team was so bad they couldn’t even sell anybody off of it to rebuild the farm.

Mid-level moves are the riskiest because they aren't cheap enough to ignore, and the reason they're mid-level and not big deal contracts is because the players could be good or bad. Eppler has been unlucky there, but let's be real, Cahill was a lot better last year than this year. Harvey, too. Allen was a bad idea, and I still don't know what Eppler was thinking there, but given his reluctance to push for expensive relievers, I wonder if it wasn't Arte's idea to get an establish pen piece.
Within the parameters of what Eppler had the freedom to do, the results look bad, but I honestly don't know what he should've done instead. Moves like this are hit or miss. We've missed more than our share. Does that make Eppler a poor evaluator? Not necessarily. It could just make him unlucky. If anyone was a good enough evaluator to be right all the time, nobody would be able to afford them.
I've criticized Eppler before and probably will again, but people seriously need to get over the FA stuff. Cozart, Cahill, Harvey - all of them made a lot of sense at the time. It wasn't predictable that they'd be the disasters they became. Anyone who thinks otherwise is full of it.
