This is inaccurate. Nevin was not fired, he just wasn't given a contract extension after the season ended.

Yeah well, obviously Mr. Warren got that wrong. But, he attributes Arte's supposed interest in a president of baseball operations to what The Athletic is reporting...

  2. I can only hope that what is being reported is, indeed, genuine. As, if so, the light may have indeed "gone on" (albeit very oddly) for Arte while giving hope to many fans as well...

After firing their manager Phil Nevin as the Angels' season collapsed, Arte Moreno is reportedly interested in hiring a President of Baseball Operations. Perry Minasian is the Angels' general manager. It is unclear what the addition of a PBO would do to Minasian's responsibilities.

According to FanSided's Robert Murray, Moreno is leaving much room for speculation as the Angels front office could evolve in the offseason.

There [were] reports out from The Athletic that the Angels were looking for a President of Baseball Operations…” “All I’ve gotten back is ‘ask Arte.’ And it’s people that you think would know, and they don’t know.”

It has only been a few weeks.  Only one team with an open manager slot has filled it.  I don't think there's a real rush--especially since the people who ARE being mentioned as possibilities for the Angels' position aren't really being discussed for the other open positions.

Yeah...I know you weren't suggesting this but let's not pretend that this is a good thing...

Daniel’s impressive outing Saturday was all the more noteworthy because it came against a Javelinas lineup that has hit .302 as a team and is the only Fall League club with more than 100 runs scored (108). Then again, having a starter that has already faced the Cleveland Guardians, Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics is a pretty good way of cooling even the AFL’s hottest bats.

Giants ask permission to speak to Melvin, next day he is hired. Halos drag their feet about Buck he will end up in SD. Minasian has to get OK from Arte to do anything.

Looking into the hire a little more...I found the last few lines of this article interesting. As the hire was made by a similarly "lame duck" GM who turned to a "familiar face" as manager as I suspect Minasian will do in recommending/hiring Showalter...

As for Melvin, he’ll now take over another team in need of a culture change.  After winning 107 games in 2021, the Giants are 159-163 over the last two seasons, and Kapler’s hands-off managerial style was starting to seem more like a detriment than a plus.  Several Giants players, either on or off the record, felt the club was somewhat directionless, with Logan Webb outright stating he felt “we have to make some big changes in here to create that winning culture.”

These criticisms extended not only to Kapler but to president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, whose contract is believed to run only through the end of the 2024 season. As such, Zaidi is also certainly feeling the pressure to build a contending roster, and the Giants are expected to be aggressive shoppers this winter after missing out on both Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa as a big-ticket addition last offseason.  Faced with what might be a make-or-break scenario, it probably isn’t surprising that Zaidi has turned to a familiar face as manager — Zaidi previously worked as the Athletics’ assistant GM during Melvin’s tenure in Oakland.

So if it’s not Buck and it’s Arte/his advisors making the call, do all signs point to Erstad?

Salmon and Finley are presumably his advisors, and they obviously played with Erstad.

I would love for it to be Erstad as I know his name has been bandied about as a potential candidate. But has anyone seen anything in print or otherwise from him saying he's even interested in the gig?

    Interesting article about Minasian.

If this was already shared previously, sorry.

Regardless of what I think about Arte, I think we should give Perry the benefit of the doubt and a little more patience before giving up on him.  Minasian inherited quite a large mess.

Um...mess? You might contend that in his defense but how do you explain the quote below where coming into the job, Minasian saw a team "close to competing"? Which, again, was a ridiculous (bordering on blind) statement for him to make. But, no doubt, was said to appease/endorse the nonsense that Arte/the front office was stating at the time as well...

"We don’t feel like we’re that far away — we don’t," Minasian said. "I think we’re closer than what our record might show to competing."

Feel free to find an article.

Adding players who produce below a 2.5 war pace does not mean making the team worse.

This is not a statement for or against Perry, I'm simply saying the article is trash.

Lol...I already did find/post one & am just trying to find out what (as you asserted) the reason was why 1 was used over the other? As, from the article...is the statement that "WAA is a zero-based version of WAR" invalid/incorrect then or what? Thanks!

It’d be hard to top the Angels “search” for Joe Maddon.
They interviewed him, Farrell, Buck, and…

To fulfill the requirement of interviewing a minority, they interiewed Johnny Washington, the Padres hitting coach who has never once been uttered as a managerial candidate before or after that interview.

Yes...he point is every "search" that's been done has involved some sad & bogus element to it...

Is that really a better situation for Arte?

IMO, he comes off looking worse if Perry resigns than if he fires Perry.

Yes because the "meddling", "stupid" & "greedy" owner who turns every pinchable penny (perhaps next, in such minds, to be the savings from Perry's final year if he quits) into "yacht fuel" worries about his "look" & what people think of him? Whether real or perceived, a person's actions/words have consequences & the same is true for Perry. From his initial claim that the team was only a few pieces away from contending to his questionable depth acquisitions (that led, this year, to a surprising fire sale of said players only a month or so later) & now with Tamin's firing which dealt a significant blow to the structure he backed & built. Which, sadly...is in no way is a great "look" for Perry either...

the entire industry knows otherwise even if those are the words out of Arte's mouth.  They basically put spies in the dugout at the end of the season.  Do you think Finley and Salmon were Perry's choice to do that?

Minasian has been neutered.  He got Tamin and extra payroll for a year and it was a hot mess.

And that's the thing.  A couple of mistakes and the whole strategy falls apart yet it's what every GM is tasked with for this org.  Zero margin for error followed by getting your nuts clipped.

I hate to say it but with Tamin's firing & with no talk (yet) of an extension...it's really looking like Arte is just trying to get Minasian to quit. I mean...if Arte, indeed, held Tamin accountable/fired him for the regression of the pitching staff then how highly do you think he regards the guy who backed/enabled him?
