Think about it from the Angels standpoint.  Rodriguez isn't doing anything in the bullpen that some other player can't easily fill. And there's still some serious upside as a starter for Rod. Let him spend the rest of the year developing as a starter and let him and Detmers join the rotation together in 2022.

Meanwhile, Sandoval is the present and future in this rotation, and Quintana may be neither of those.

Halo fans get early look at 2022 rotation after July 31. Ohtani, Canning, Sandoval, Barria, Suarez. Detmers and Chris Rod

Remember when Scioscia always said that you need 10-12 starting pitchers to start the season?  He was right, as usual.  I would go with this:

    Ohtani

    Trade Guy

    Cobb/Heaney

    Sandoval (I really like him)

    Suarez

    Canning

Depth of Barria, Detmers, Rodriguez (after he gets his innings built up), still need a couple of more.

I save money on resigning Heaney or Cobb and put in Detmers and Barria.

Sure the CBA expires after the season but we don’t know if that means they’ll have more club control or less club control and if I had to guess it would be less club control. So why would we start his clock.

Get him some experience see if he is option for 22. Same with Barria and Suarez put them in rotation. Finish this year with Ohtani, Canning, Sandoval, Barria, Suarez and Detmers. Like halos did with Fletcher you sign young players to extensions.

That's a hard one. If the Angels were right there with the A's and Astros, there is no doubt in my mind you're right. He's one of the five best pitchers in the organization, regardless of level.

But if they're still a few games out, the team may deem the difference between eight August and September of Detmers versus someone like Heaney, Cobb or Canning to be relatively inconsequential.

And if that's the case, they may end up pushing his debut back to 2022 to secure an additional season of control.  And there are also other options that appear to have earned an opportunity.  I wouldn't mess with what Suarez is doing, but his work in the bullpen lends credence to the right of putting him in the rotation. Jaime Barria has earned an opportunity.  Quite frankly, he earned the right to be a SP in this rotation two or three years ago.  The Angels have jerked him around.

The contract between players and union is up this off season. I would like to get Detmers a few starts before 22. That is if halos trade off Heaney, Cobb, Bundy and Quintana.

No one wants to hear this but the Angels may have the depth to replace Bundy and Quintana but they don’t have the depth to remove both of those guys off the roster.  This is not me advocating keeping them in the rotation it is just a fact that you need depth.  You only have to follow the Angels for a month or two to know that pitchers health is always in question.

Put them in bullpen, many pitchers have reinvented themselves in pen.

If we traded everyone you want the Angels to trade, we’d have about 12 players to field a roster.

They are all gone after this season anyways. We have replacements in minors. Rotation would be Ohtani, Canning, Barria, Sandoval, Suarez and Detmers. Rengifo play 2B Fletcher to SS replaces Jose Iglesias. Benboom or Thaiss replaces Suzuki. Bullpen pieces not traded stay others come from minors.
