It is all in how you present the offer, you don't go in thug life like you seem to think. But you dont bend over and take it in the ass and do whatever he asks. Albert pujols happens when you do that.

On a player for player swap of course Trout can not replaced. You are only looking short term at the Angels Organization. Having a Harper or Machado in a long term contract and trading Trout for a large haul is much better than just seeing Trout leaving in two years after we miss the playoffs again and again. Don't kid yourself. Is it to much to ask to think outside the box on how to make the Angels better?

You leave a 400 million dollar check on the table with his name on it. Nobody leaves 400 million on the table over a NTC that is in place for 80% of a contract length. Maybe you talk about 80% no trade with 20% limited. There are a ton of ways to go.

i would give him a no trade clause that good for the first 80% of his contract. Maybe all of it considering his next contract likely takes him to retirement. You wont get any value out of an old ass player anyhow. In the situation where someone is going to be a free agent and sign one big last contract i dont give a full no trade

You are by no means strong arming him into an extension. Hes either with us or against us. There is no middle ground. Him rejecting the biggest offer ever for a baseball player (probably 400 million) means hes gone and not on board with the direction of the Angels. At that point you need to look and whats best for the Angels. Its unlikely in the next two years we compete for a World Series--therefore you have to move him and get some value back. Professional sports is a cutthroat business. It is nothing personal and the players know that. Having a top 10 player signed for 8-10 years who hasn't reached his prime yet has more value than the best player ever who wont commit to your organization.

Well that is a major problem, no matter what the angels do. Teams are stupid for giving players no trade clauses---it does nothing but hold the team hostage when a situation such as this occurs.

I was under the impression trout doesn't have a no trade clause. I don't remember that when he signed his extension. My idea clearly would not work if he does have a no trade clause- but if he doesn't then he couldn't say no to a trade. Best he could do is try to say he wont sign an extension with the team hes traded too. Even then you are getting a lot because you get 2 years of trout.

I have been a big believer in Angels throwing some big $ and Machado and or Harper with the intent to bring a big contract to Trout and say Sign it or we are trading you. I love trout more than anything, but i believe getting Harper or Machado plus the package that you get from Trout would make the team better than just Trout alone. I would bet a team like the Dodgers or Yankees would give up a massive haul to have Trout for 2 years. You could start by asking the dodgers for Buehler and Bellinger plus top 2 prospects in there system....It would hurt my soul to see Trout go anywhere, but ultimately I want to see the angels in the playoffs. With or without Trout.

If AZ is dead set on getting rid of Greinke, Any chance we trade our bad contract (pujols) with a 10-15 ranked prospect for Greinke? I dont see AZ getting much if anything in return--this deal would save them about 20m over 3 years and net them something in return? Both come off the books in 2022...At least the pitcher would be more useful..

I start by signing Harper at 12/360. Not sure he will get much more given his down seasons every other year. This eats up all of our expected 30 million payroll additions for next year. We need to show Trout we are serious about contending. Harper is also someone we can build around and market if Trout has to be traded. Trade Calhoun to clear cap space—eat 3 or 4 mil of the contract to save 8 million. I think there are a few teams that would take Calhoun pretty quick at 8 million for a season. Maybe toss is a lower level prospect if necessary. Trade Adell/Marsh/Ward for Syndergaard (Degrom is better but to old, I worry about having to resign him in 2 years at age 32.) Syndergaard is young and can be resigned once cozart/pujols comes off the books. This gives us a solid lineup. 1b—Pujols/JFM 2b—Fletcher SS—Simmons 3b---Cozart LF—Upton CF--- Trout RF---Harper DH---Ohtani C--- Arcia/Briceno Pitchers- 1. Syndergaard 2. Heaney 3. Skaggs 4. Barria 5. Shoemaker 6. Pena Bullpen—I am counting on our current pen returning to healthy status. In 2020 we have reinforcements coming on the pitching side of things—Ohtani will be back along with the possibility of Canning. Ohtani/Syndergaard/Canning/Heaney/Barria (I would consider trading Heaney or Skaggs at this point to clear up salary. I don’t really see any other way we can get much better than this next year, it is really year 2 where we really have a well built team. Cozart comes off the books after year two and pujols the year after freeing up a ton of money. Some side things to consider—You can non tender a couple guys and put that money into G Richards on a two year deal---maybe like 10 million over 2 years—first year is recovering 2nd is him coming back and pitching to build his value. He could be a solid 5th in our rotation or do a even split with Ohtani who would also be coming back from TJS.
