  1. 11. Angels — Chase Dollander, RHP, Tennessee There’s no way the Angels expected Dollander to be an option for the 11th pick of the draft at the start of the season, but his inconsistencies and struggles—particularly in the first inning of games—have kept him sliding down boards. There’s a limit to how far a talent like his will fall as long as he keeps flashing the stuff that made him the top pitcher in the class to start the year in the first place, and the Angels are the beneficiaries in this scenario with better 2023 performers going in front of them.

  5. ANGELS ACQUIRE Logan O’Hoppe, C Age: 22 Selected in the 23rd round of the 2018 draft out of high school in New York, O’Hoppe is a huge win for the Phillies’ scouting and player development departments. He’s done nothing but hit over the last two seasons, and he represented the Phillies this season at the Futures Game. His defense is surprisingly good for a player his size, and he’s always shown the willingness to work to improve. His arm is plenty strong for the position, but his large frame has meant he’s often had to throw from his knees to get the ball out in time. As talented as he is, he was blocked in Philadelphia by J.T. Realmuto, who is under contract through 2025. The Angels have spent the last few seasons stockpiling pitching prospects in the draft. Now, O’Hoppe will get a chance to work with them.
  6. ANGELS ACQUIRE Mickey Moniak, OF Age: 24 In 2017, the Phillies had the No. 1 overall pick. They spent it on Moniak, who has not lived up to that draft slot. He’s bounced from Triple-A to the big leagues over the past three seasons, accumulating 93 at-bats in that time. He showed up to spring training stronger this year, and produced exit velocities up to 114 mph, but a broken hand stunted his progress. He returned to the big leagues in late June before being optioned back to Triple-A in mid July. Now, the California native gets a change of scenery and the hope that the Angels can unlock the potential he showed as an amateur. Jadiel Sanchez, OF Age: 21 The Phillies drafted Sanchez out of Puerto Rico in the 12th round of the 2019 draft. He used the lost 2020 pandemic season to re-make his body and showed up noticeably stronger heading into 2021. He missed time in 2021 due to injury and is currently on a rehab assignment for an injury sustained this season. At his best, he makes loud contact from both sides of the plate and can recognize spin. His strong throwing arm makes him best suited for right field in the long run.
  7. ANGELS RECEIVE Tucker Davidson, LHP Age: 26 Davidson has been riding the Gwinnett-Atlanta shuttle for multiple years. The Braves have been trying to develop him as a starter, and there’s every reason for the Angels to try the same, but the window of time for him to make it as a starter is starting to close. If he can’t stick as a starter, and his control wavers when he pitches in the majors, he has a fallback option as a lefty reliever. Davidson’s 93-95 mph fastball plays as a below-average pitch because it doesn’t have the movement to miss bats. His 87-89 mph slider is a useful weapon, but it’s not a pitch he can consistently throw for strikes. Davidson has had plenty of success at Triple-A, but he’s yet to translate it to the majors. The Angels have plenty of innings to give him to see if a change of scenery will help him find himself in the majors. Jesse Chavez, RHP Age: 38 This is already Chavez’s second trade of the season. He began the year with the Cubs, and then was sent back to Atlanta (where he pitched in 2021) in a trade that sent Sean Newcomb to the Cubs. Chavez was effective for the Braves, going 1-1, 2.11 with a 2.54 FIP. He actually should be a useful addition to the Angels’ bullpen. He’s a free agent at the end of the season.
