ScruffytheJanitor reacted to howie in Let’s get the #1 draft pick!
I wouldn’t have thought it was possible, but if this team keeps up the way they’re going, we’ll have a decent chance at getting the #1 pick in next year’s draft! By good chance- I’m talking 10% or higher!
But seriously- maybe there’s a Ken Griffey Jr. in this draft! Or even better- maybe the next Phil Nevin! The good part there is is that Phil can mentor him about being a failed prospect here and then advise him that all he needs is a change of scenery to succeed in life.
it’s an exciting time to be an Angels fan- keep losing for that pick!

That would be a huge mistake. He's one of the best GMs we've had in a long time.

ScruffytheJanitor reacted to Angelsjunky in Angels acquire Dominic Leone for Jeremiah Jackson (move Bachman to 60 day IL)
Don't forget Coleman Crow and Landon Marceaux for Escobar. On value for value basis, that might be the worst one.
According to our very own Angelswin pre-season rankings, DiMinasian has traded away our #4, 5, 13, 14, 16, 18 prospects...six of the top 20. With O'Hoppe, Neto and Silseth graduated--not to mention Bachman and Joyce--that's probably four of the top 10.

They did draft some middle infielders, just later in the draft.
I'm sure there are various factors at play, but this organization does need position players with advanced hit tools/offensive abilities more than it needs high ceiling type MI'ers at the moment. Neto appears to have SS locked down for the foreseeable future, O'Hoppe (and maybe Quero?) will probably have C locked down, and we have Trout to man CF for the next few years (and maybe Rada thereafter, but there's time to figure out Trout's CF successor).
What this organization does need is corner IF/OF who can hit. It also needs LHH. Enter Schanuel, who seems like as close to a certainty as a draft pick can be in terms of a hitter who will likely reach the majors based on their offense.
Rios doesn't really have a defensive home, but his offense is his carrying tool. I don't know much about Redfield, but my understanding is his hit tool is also fairly advanced.
I saw the 2021 draft as the "we need pitchers" draft, and I see the 2023 draft as "we need hitters" draft.

Sorry if these have been posted elsewhere, but I haven't seen them.
Chase Gockel (9th round) signed for $1,000.

Chris Barazza (10th round) signed for $7,500:

So looks like they took the savings from those two, plus Chris Clark, to get the extra $ for Wimmer.

Exactly, I don't think worse bet is the term I would use to describe drafting a 1B in the first round. Yes, they'll come with lower defensive value even if they're pretty solid defensively. But then again, that value discrepancy could be offset with the bat.
I wouldn't even call it a strategy really, when I examine it. Because there's no strategy, it's just a complicated measure of projected value. The Angels projected that Schanuel's value was high enough to draft 11th, likely because he would be fast to the majors, fill a team need long term and would be a left handed bat the in middle of the lineup.
If we juxtapose that with taking someone like Arjun Nimmala, you're looking at the potential for greater offensive and defensive value, but much more risk and a few more years of necessary developmental time.
I won't blow smoke and defend the pick as something great, but I also won't belittle the pick simply because he's 1B from a smaller conference. There is justification either way. I'll simply say they made a pick that falls within the range of expected picks.

Pretty sure Walsh will be DFA'd this offseason. How else is he supposed to hit 32 homers and get an all-star appearance for some random NL team next season?

ScruffytheJanitor reacted to Dave Saltzer in The Official 2023 MLB Amateur Draft Thread
Just a thought for those who seem down on the draft. There seems to be some consensus on here that Schanuel, at peak, should be a .280/.380/.520 hitter with 25+ HR potential. People seem to think that those numbers are pedestrian and can be filled easily at 1B.
Numbers like that would make him the second best offensive 1B in the AL in terms of OPS (way above Vladdy Jr right now). Numbers like that would make him the 3rd best in the NL by way of Ops, not far behind Freddie Freeman.
So, does that change some minds if Schanuel pans out to what we think he can?

Looking at minors career numbers, the Ks aren’t terrible, somewhere around 1 per 4.5 PAs.
Main issue is the OBP through lack of BBs.

ScruffytheJanitor reacted to Second Base in Neto
There aren't many that fall into that criteria. Neto is not only special in terms of his high ability leaving college, but also the circumstance of the ball club needing him immediately.
