  1. So, a several months later update… Threw myself back into the job market in my field while I maintained my position. I was very transparent with management at my company about the fact that I was actively looking and they had limited time to act. Got a number of offers while looking that were all significantly higher than what I was making, but chose to hold out for a bit more (it’s a wild time in my industry and there’s some real opportunity out there). Finally got an offer for about 75% more than I was making (and that’s before bonuses). Took that back to my management team, and to their credit they all went to bat for me with HR. Exactly zero of them (or me) ever got a response from the people that could actually make anything happen. So yeah, I ended up in a new role with a ton more control and decision making latitude at nearly double the pay and with much more opportunity for advancement. Can’t complain about that.
  2. Just did a rewatch of Band of Brothers. Hadn’t seen it since it first came out. The story is still great, and it doesn’t feel dated at all outside of some “kinda too much” musical choices that they made. Major Dick Winters remains the most thoroughly likable character in the history of TV (and perhaps just people). Ron Livingston and Damien Lewis are both amazing in their roles.
  3. Went to a music festival in coastal Maryland this last weekend with a bunch of old college friends. Saw plenty of good acts and bands, but Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats unquestionably put on the best show of the whole festival. Honestly one of the best shows I’ve ever seen period. That dude is just an exploding supernova of raw talent. I’ve seen a ton of shows in my life, and I’ve never seen anything like what that dude and his band did last night. Absolute fucking monsters.
  4. A figment of our collective imagination. A fever dream of gold glove caliber defense, exceptional plate discipline, and gap to gap power.
  5. Decided to watch Eastern Promises in honor of @Brandon. Definitely a well-made movie with a ton of style, good plot line, and an awesome Viggo Mortensen performance. That said, I was kinda shocked when it ended. I didn’t look at the movie runtime before watching it (roughly 100 minutes), and the end of the movie kinda felt like the end of act two to me. This movie easily could’ve had another 30-45 minutes of awesomeness. Maybe a sequel some day?
  6. It’s just that with nuclear energy, the potential scale and overall impact of some sort of accident could be massive. I know everyone goes on and on about how safe it is, but it’s not like there are never incidents. Luckily, those incidents have been relatively minor so far, though Chernobyl came very very close to turning into a cataclysmic event.
  7. I get where you’re coming from. Bro has sucked the last month or so, and his peripherals weren’t great before that. But it just seems that teams that pick up Angels pitchers that suck seem to magically resurrect them on a semi-regular basis. I know it’s an emotional fan thing to predict that sort of outcome, but it’s definitely worked out similarly before, and it points to some sort of over-arching flaw within our organization. I just hope someone picks him up and he gets to experience some success for his sake.
  8. Back in Phoenix again. Turns out Sky Harbor is peaceful AF on a random Wednesday in August. Pretty pleasant experience. Also, the new airport in KC is really well done. I’ve flown out of there a couple times since it opened this last winter/spring, but today was the first time that I showed up with some time to waste. Good restaurant/bar choices, nice facilities, pleasant aesthetics, etc… Although some of the restaurants are like polished up versions of things that were hyper-local roadside food trucks 5-10 years ago, and that feels oddly inauthentic.
  9. Their BP is just better than ours. It’s what they do year in and year out
  10. Fully agreed… but here’s the ugly truth of it… moving runners over doesn’t get you paid
  11. I actually tweeted MLB about the same thing when they got it wrong in a trivia question on one of their shows a couple years back. Got zero response
  12. So, I don’t know why this bothers me so much, but the graphic they just showed about Schanuel being the first player to make his MLB debut in the same season he was drafted since Conor Gillaspie in 2008 is wrong. MLB TV actually asked the same question as a piece of trivia a couple years ago too… and also got it wrong (they said Gillaspie as well I believe). The correct answer is Brandon Finnegan with the 2014 Royals. Was taken 17th overall in the 2014 MLB draft and made his MLB debut that same season. Don’t know why broadcasts/MLB itself consistently get that wrong. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/f/finnebr01.shtml Tagging @Jeff Fletcher
  13. It’s a rough couple of weeks here for everyone at AW. This was a really shitty one to hear about. I saw the thread a few days ago, but it was tough to put the emotional energy into writing something thoughtful. Happens when things keep coming at you like that. I generally call it “grief fatigue”, which I’m sure a lot of you have experienced before and are currently going through with the loss of @Lou and @Brandon All that said, I’ll remember Brandon fondly. I’ve been interacting with him since 2008-ish, though we’ve never actually met in person. Seemed like we had similar senses of humor and shared a lot of opinions about various things. It was also nice having a fellow dude with some KC connections on the board to chat with. Basically, though we never met, I always considered him a friend. Someone I could count on to respond when I asked some random ass life question, or had some sort of hot take on a movie, show, comedian, etc… This place always felt like a better hang in general whenever he was active. I don’t know what happened to him, and I suppose it’s none of my business really. I just hope he had the time to say goodbye to those he needed to, and that his candle burned out the same way he lived… bright as fuck to the end.
  14. The Mets crew did not hold back a bit. Lol. It was awesome
  15. I guess their owner thought it made him “sound cheap”. Again, just a super weird story
