  1. Ohtani looking 100% healthy and Adell taking pitches are the two best things to come out of ST early. On the mound, Cobb looking like a different guy is nice too.

  2. I feel this just might be the starting line up on Opening Day. Aside from Benboom, who might be replaced by Stassi, this very well could be the line up. I like the balance, and moving Albert to the 6 slot makes sense. For anyone who is going today, enjoy the game.

  3. Damn Fletcher is fun to watch. Solid single up the middle.

  4. I am betting that Walsh is the starting 1B on opening day. This organization owes nothing to Pujols except a graceful exit. I think it is obvious to the casual observer that Walsh brings more to the team than Pujols. I hear the bs about respecting Pujols, I think that Pujols should respect the reality of his situation that the Angels may finally have a player better than him to play 1B.

  5. That was a really fun game to watch. For the first time in a long time it felt like old school 'Angels baseball' - good base-running with guys in motion and stolen base attempts, scoring runs on outs, tight defence, hitting to all fields. The pitching was pretty good too (how much are we paying Cobb again?). Loved it. Hopefully a sign of things to come and a fun season ahead.

  6. It looks like Canning didn't throw a single spike curveball this outing which was working really well for him his last start. He exclusively threw his slider and fastball this time around. I'm pretty sure he will use his full repertoire in the regular season. He was getting his work in. That is not an excuse for his shit fastball command to the doom and gloomers.

  7. the bad news is that Canning's fastball command was for shit. The good news is that they couldn't even really hit the ones that found they knew were coming.

  8. Sweet, I just noticed in the game notes that Ohtani's game on the mound will be televised on Saturday vs. the White Sox, not Andrew Heaney.

  9. Pujols is going to get the opening day nod, but I'm guessing Walsh gets the bulk of the playing time so I'm okay with the veteran getting the nod on OD. Here's my lineup.. SS Fletcher CF Trout DH Ohtani 3B Rendon LF Upton 1B Walsh SS Iglesias (I want this guy in RBI spots, considered batting him above Walsh even) RF Fowler C Stassi

  10. I wouldn't mind the batting order looking like this: Fletcher 2B Iglesias SS Trout CF Ohtani DH Rendon 3B Upton LF Walsh 1B Stassi C Fowler RF I think this is a lethal lineup

  11. I'd imagine that Barreto has the edge over Rengifo since Barreto is out of options. I hope that Lagares beats out Jay, as he's a massive upgrade defensively. I'm still a little concerned that Maddon opts for Jay over Lagares because of his familiarity with Jay.

  12. A few things to mention, 1. Rengifo and Barreto have looked really nice, hopefully one is able to breakout ot becomes a Super Ul 2. Lagares has won the backup Of spot and he deserves it 3. Quintana and Cobb both have shown improved Velocities, which is a postive and i am looking forward to them pitching 4. Walsh has been amazing and hopfully is the starting 1st base man (probably not). But he looks like the real deal 5. Rojas another dominating spring hopefully he get a shot.

  15. TEMPE, Ariz. — Joe Maddon is hoping he can finally reap the benefits of a pitcher who used to give his teams so much trouble. Desperate to fix a shaky bullpen, the Angels acquired closer Raisel Iglesias from the Cincinnati Reds in December. They brought in a pitcher whom Maddon never wanted to see when he was managing the Chicago Cubs. “It’s premium stuff, premium closer stuff,” Maddon said. “When he’s on a really good roll, hitters do not like going up there.” Iglesias, 31, comes to the Angels with a résumé that includes 100 saves over the past four seasons with the Reds, with a 2.95 ERA.

  16. Upton caught a ball that landed squarely in his glove -- Hot Damn, the defense really is playing better!

  17. I'm hoping Ohtani is the Opening Day starter on the mound... with Walsh at 1B and Pujols at DH>

  20. I remember my cousin in JUCO back in the late 90s went with a fastball that sat at 91-93, a legit change at about 82-84, and a knuckler that he would throw around 75. Got some draft attention, but blew out his UCL at 19 and had residual effects from there on out. It was super fun though watching those kids see a 93mph four seamer followed by a F-all knuckler. Was out on a ST vacation with him a couple years ago just messing around in a grass patch next to our AirBnB, and while the fastball wasn't really there anymore the dude could still dance that knuckler in a way that made it near impossibl

  21. I've been bullish on Rengifo for awhile. He has a lot of talent and a good eye. It's easy to forget but the dude is still super young - he just turned 24 last month. I think he'll be a key contributor - perhaps more of a bench guy this year, but I would anticipate him being a starter by next year, or at least play in a lot of games all over the diamond. Lagares has had a nice spring, and while I don't think he has won anything yet, he certainly is the best fit in that he's a natural backup for Trout. We don't really have anyone else who can play CF. Fowler can get by for a game or so

  25. I'm telling you guys, Angels rotation has been pretty underrated, even by local fans. I think Cobb gets his ERA under 4.00 this year. I believe Cobb, Bundy, Ohtani and Canning are going to be very good this year. Sneaky good rotation, solid defense unit, good depth and some team chemistry to go with it. Minasian may have done a low-key solid job this winter.

  28. Vasgersian has been my favorite play by play guy and, in my opinion, one of the best since his work with the Padres. This is a huge win for Angel fans

  29. Joe Maddon take... I openly wondered what the hell he was doing at times last year -- the Joe doing things to do things takes.. But I really like how he's handled the rolling innings and SPs exiting and re-entering the games. Instead of doing what most teams have done and rolling an inning when a guy gets into trouble, he's removed the SP, called in a RP and then brought the SP back to restart the next innings. Good way to get RPs in game situations like those they will see when it counts and at the same time allowing the SP having a shitty inning to come back and get his work in.

  30. Upton just looks like the guy we saw the final month of last year to me. But he too has been moving better and my crack earlier today about him catching a ball that hit his glove was only half joking. Upton is the weirdest bad defender the Angels have had, he's been good at chasing stuff down but good lord actually catching the ball has been an issue. I personally believe the improved defense was a big factor in the Angels improved play to close out 2020, it's the one thing I was really hoping to see improvement on and so far it's been really nice.

  31. Honestly Fowler has put together a lot of solid at-bats as well.

  32. On top of all yours, I’d add Upton being patient and not chasing bad pitches as a big plus also, in early Spring observations

  34. How do you know Canning isn't working on an issue right now when the games don't matter so he's ready for when they do? It's that simple.

  35. And everyone should be able to defend their takes or respect other people's. Is telling others they are being "protective" when offering a different opinion any less of an attempt to silence an opinion? IMO, it's doubling down on shitty takes. Saying someone else's opinion is fueled by an emotional need to "protect" the player and not just a differing opinion is essentially begging for someone to flip that back at them.

It's been years since we visited Hawaii. Our trip to Maui was great but it was typical Hawaii experience. Our trip to Kauai was meh. On the Kauai trip we were going for more of a rural experience and we got it, along with the locals who obviously don't like white vacationers.

  39. On the topic of Angels lineups, I find it interesting that the bottom of the order is Fowler, Catcher, and Iglesias. I would've thought that Maddon would bat Fowler 9th as a back of the order sort of leadoff hitter" since he used Fowler as a leadoff hitter in Chicago. Also, with the way Iglesias has swung the bat so far, I'd want to give Iglesias more AB's than Fowler. But Maddon's gonna Maddon.

  40. Now I think we know who the obvious internal choices are: Trent Rush, Jose Mota, and Terry Smith. I'm really interested in who the multiple external candidates are, and I hope they go with one of them.

  41. I agree with you. Iglesias has shown good plate awareness and would be a good 2 slot hitter. Fowler as a switch hitter adds flexibility though, but whiffs a lot. I like your line up though.

  42. Minasian seems to have allowed Maddon to make a lot of these decisions. Some unusual, some smart. But keeping Jay over Lagares may be a decision he has to overrule Joe on. The only other clue I have to go on is Joe said he is more than willing to pull Upton late in games. That seems to imply a defensive guy would be really important, and Lagares is certainly a better defender than Jay.
