  1. In the press conference now. Will give some updates. These aren't exact quotes, just paraphrasing. Originally, Eppler looked at Cozart for 2B, and Cozart was excited to play 2B for us, but then Eppler got the call from Detroit on Kinsler, and Cozart was willing to move to 3B. Cozart is excited to play for us and wants to win.

  2. Okay folks, I'm excited. We have a great group of players. Getting Upton has been an incredible boon to us, as he's been reaching out to players and trying to recruit for him (both Kinsler and Cozart). The clubhouse chemistry should be great and that was a big influence for both Cozart and Kinsler. Offensively, our team is night and day better. With Kinsler and Cozart, we have GREATLY improved over last year. And defensively, our pitchers will relish playing with these guys behind them. As Eppler said, we do have the chance to be something special in run prevention. I

  4. Worst news of the day. Pretty much sealing the fate of Escobar. Besides being a pretty good Miami Vice bad guy stand-in, he was a joy to watch in everything he did. And he has fashions. I now have to revert to Jose Mota as Miami Vice bad guy stand-in, esp. if he still has his OG bright red covertible Mercedes.

  9. Remember how we said this was going to be Eppler's most important off season likely of his career? Well, he just killed it. Can 2018 start already please?!

  10. Worth noting that he's a 2 WAR at SS. The same offensive numbers would be worth less at 3B, not to mention he may be worse defensively at 3B than at SS since it's new to him.

  12. I interviewed for a baseball operations internship with the Reds back around the time qualifying offers were going out, so I looked into their roster in preparation and was impressed by Cozart. Three important trends to look at imo are Outside Zone Swing%, Hard hit%, and BB and K rate. Just from looking at the numbers, Cozart's walk rate, Hard hit%, and Outside the Zone swing% have improved not just last year, but incrementally over the past 3. So basically, he's been selecting better pitches and making harder contact, the only difference being that his BABIP did not increase along with it. Th

  13. Cozart is a 2 WAR player BEFORE his breakout season last year. This is the type of move we needed.

  16. Correct. He did not receive a QO. Angels don't lose a draft pick for signing him. Eppler is improving the MLB roster without sacrificing their farm.

  20. .700 OPS from Cozart with his above average defense would be what I expect from him. Don't think it's an overpay. 2 WAR players usually cost about this amount.

  22. These moves this off season are very interesting to me, they seem to not only plug the holes now but i get the feeling he has an eye on next off seasons FA class. It seems clear he wasnt interested in any of the big names right now, and perhaps rightful so as none were perfect. Dare i dream that we might see a Trout/Upton/Harper OF? Since NY got Stanton, they might be out of that derby. Or Machado/Donaldson at 3B? (i think Cozarts long term is as a 2B for some reason) Question, is he bringing the donkey?

  23. His batted ball profile on fly balls changed -- not unlike many others who have seen an offensive surge. Cozart's a nice pick up because he can slide over to 2B next year once Kinsler is gone. Eppler has been yapping about putting an emphasis on defensive flexibility -- Cozart brings that. I think this is also a further indication the Angels fully intend to roll with a 6 man rotation.

  24. I love this move, Cozart was someone I thought the Angels would consider this off-season and 3 years, $38M is an underpay in my opinion. His floor on defense alone is probably worth the price we just payed. Although his offense may regress I, like some others here, believe it will still be more than adequate for our needs. Quite pleased with this move.

  27. This is a strong move, not because we are assuming he'll maintain his 2017 offensive production, but because he provides tremendous defensive versatility and gives us options to pursue either a 2B OR a 3B next offseason. Don't underestimate the value of defensive flexibility. We are effectively paying him to do two jobs (3B and utility infielder). This means we don't actually really need a utility infielder on our roster, either. We can, in turn, trade Cron for a reliever and sign LoMo to play 1B. Cozart can play 3B about four times a week, then play 2B another day a week (Kinsl

  29. I'm a litte concerned last year was an outlier, but I'm not mad at it. I trust Eppler. Our offense looks fucking nice...not to mention our defense. If we get another starting pitcher I may have to blow Eppler to completion.

The more I think about Cozart, the better I am with that plan. He would be our 3B and also our backup for SS and 2B. I don’t expect him to hit like he did last year, but having the flexibility to cover all those positions significantly improved his value to us.

  37. Over his last three seasons Cozart is slashing .271/.340/.480. If he puts up numbers in that range over the next three seasons as well with his defense and versatility, I’d say that’s a great signing.

  39. From mlbtraderumors.com re: his last year and whether or not it will continue... "Whether he can sustain that level of power remains to be seen, but it’s worth emphasizing that Cozart’s 12.2 percent walk rate and 24.4 percent chase rate on pitches out of the strike zone were far and away the best marks of his career. Those positive trends suggest that much of his improvement at the dish was legitimate, even if the power could be difficult to replicate. Those of the mind that his power spike was in any way tied to his hitter-friendly home park in Cincinnati, though, should also take note t

    Third base plan

Not too long ago I was hypnotized into thinking the Angels would be "fine" at 3B with Valbuena considering he hit 16 homers in the second half. A deeper dive has me in a panic (like he hit .213 in this "better" second half). Chase Headley is about the least exciting player I can think of. But a .352 OB is far more comforting than any stat I can find on Valbuena. Cozart figured out how to draw walks. the halfway point in his OB over the last 2 yrs is .347. I will take it. Bottom line is now I am firmly in the camp of Valbuena not being on the roster or being in a very, ve

Albert will have a better year than he did last year. It won't be a great year but we will all be like 'meh. I guess if he does that again I won't complain'. something like .250/.310/.430. With Kinsler, Trout and Upton in front of him he'll drive in 120 runs and Troll Daddy will slap the bass all season.
