Angels Sign C Chris Snyder to Minor League deal

Funny how a guy hitting .417 in Spring is getting the shaft.

We're alll assuming this means Conger is in AAA and Snyder is in the majors, but Snyder signed a minor-league deal, meaning they could still give Conger a chance in the majors and if he can't get it worked out, he'd head to the minors, or even another team at that point.

 

Still he can hit, and is a switch hitter, so it's time for him to get some consistent major league AB's to prove he can hit in the majors. At worst, he could DH and be the third catcher for the Angels if they needed him to be.

I find this strange as well. Why wouldn't the org. try to convert him to a corner position 2-3 years ago if they knew he'd never play defense good enough for Scioscia? Or were they just trying to let him develop as a catcher, hoping the defense would improve? Either way, this sucks for Conger and I hope he gets traded to a team that needs a backup catcher with pop. I think he'll make a decent career, just not with the Angels

The whole point of a prospect is to see if they develop, AD.  Conger has not, defensively.

For a catcher, Conger makes a great DH.

 

Unfortunately, there are about a billion DHs on the roster.

Quite the conundrum here then.  We have a Mathis on our hands, that much we know.  But what to call him....

Snyder hit 176 last year and only throws out 29% of base stealers. Didn't Hank throw out about the same in the minors with a much better bat?

 

Scioscia just doesn't like Conger and that's that. Sucks for Conger because I have heard he is a super cool guy. Hopefully he will go to another team and do well.

I like Conger, still think he breaks camp with the club. They didn't sign Snyder to a major league deal, even with an open 40-man spot. That shows something.
